Would you rather SE continue to dump money into the lost cause that is FFXIV or just remake FFXI with the incredible graphics of XIV + dx11?

A remake of XI with better graphics wouldn't fare any better than XI. The problem with both is that they are using outdated systems and failing to accommodate a market expecting something more than grinds.

And I'm hesitant to say the XIV is a lost cause.

Granted, XIV was terrible at first, but SE is making very big strides towards a better game. The whole free to play thing is certainly helping a lot there.

FFXIV has improved by leaps and bounds since I last played about a year ago. From the look of things, it has the potential to (eventually) become everything I originally expected it to be. It'll just take time.

to OP: keep "dumping" money into ff14, primarily because many of the changes that have already been made to 14 are to make it more ffxi-like.

ff14 is going to be an interesting situation, 99.999% of games are almost completely designed before any player(read: purchaser) actually gets his/her hands on it and the first year of ff14's existence is a case study in the problems that method can produce. overly egotistical directors/producers decided they knew what the consumers wanted, and they were proven to be VERY wrong.

the special circumstance is the massive financial and philosophical loyalty the SquareEnix company has towards their product. They will not allow it to fail. they'll be forced to accept less than a world smashing success yes, but failure is not an option. the active-redesign policy they've basically built from whole cloth means FF14 is a game that is going to be designed from the ground up with an entire community involved. not 12 guys in an office, but the hundreds/thousands of people who will actually play.

everyone who's actually played within the last 3 months or so all say the differences between the current game and launch are night and day, and they're not done with improvements, improvements that are largely community driven.

FF14 will never be a wow-/tor-killer like many have hoped, but success on the level of XI is not at all outside the realm of possibility. Those responsible for the failures have been removed, and the current devs entered with a humility that SE has been lacking for nearly 10 years. In the long run this will produce a better product, one worthy of being a numbered Final Fantasy.

I'm quite happy with the graphics in XI... what I would like though is more zones that are not recycled. Would also be cool if they added some stuff that was truly new to the game, such as the ability to swim and fly. I know other games have done that, and to be honest I think it is one of my biggest sad faces about the game...

It seems the PS3 Beta will be in mi-lated 2012. :(

And the free trial in late 2012 is planned for PC only. And the PS3 version won't be until January 2013.

SIGH.

I can't understand anyone who would play an MMO on a console anyway.

I'd probably use a keyboard/mouse.

But my PC can't run FFXIV (or Rift, or probably TOR Smiley: cry).

XIV is so poorly optimized right now. I built a pretty decent computer which can run it but even with settings turned down, 30FPS lock etc, it still stutters. C'est lame.

That's not really surprising. I imagine that almost all of their effort is going into designing the future game, not optimizing the current one. They're going to need to launch a really intense ad campaign anyway.

yeah I am annoyed enough to cancel both my subscriptions. Don't feel like paying for their failures with either XI or XIV 1.x

I play FFXI back in the day... got to around level 30 before 1 day of terrible grouping caused me to de-level and be unable to find a group w/o selling all my newly aquired gear. I couldn't do it anymore and quit.

I just got FFXIV 3 days ago with a new Laptop to give it a try and see whats up....and It's feeling an awful lot like FFXI. Thank GOD they don't have experience loss on death... Unfortunately The community is identical to FFXI in that you cannot find someone to answer your questions or even have a 10 second conversation.

I hate to say it but, I wish it were more WoW like. I got addicted to wow for years of raiding. I absolutely enjoyed the leveling up, questing, social aspect, and dungeons. I've yet to find an Auction House in FFXIV, but I really wish there was something like that in FFXIV. And whats up w/ the item drops in FFXIV?! it's like 100% crafting based.

Which leads me to my #1 gripe so far. I really enjoyed leveling up in WoW and while gringing finding decent usable gear from drops, and the chance at rare gear. Thats what drove me to grind more. Even the Rare spawns were awesome to hunt! So far I'm not reading anywhere that FFXIV has anything close to this.

So to answer your question. NO I don't think they should remake FFXI with better graphics unless they also want to redo everything else with the game... but thats exactly what FFXIV is. FFXIV is a FFXI remake to me. And it's sucking hard for me. I really would rather stare at my blank desktop than start up the game at the moment.

What's wrong with that?

WoW is as popular as it is because it manages to do a lot of things right that other MMO's don't. The reason there's a lot of WoW clones out there is because WoW got things right.

At it's heart, WoW is a good game. That's all that matters.

It's not the only way to do things, but it's one of the good ways.

To be fair, deleveling wasn't an issue if you took the steps you should have. I mean, you always wanted at least two levels of experience before you sold your previous level of gear. And you could tell if a party was going to be THAT bad pretty quickly.
