More signs that SE keeps getting worseFollow

Yesterday I saw that their profits last year were down 76% or something crazy like that. Probably related to FF13,FF14, and the front mission game sucking. Today I saw that the english version of their F2P cash shop game is getting closed down. Everyone in south korea has a successful F2P mmo over here but Square Enix couldn't pull it off.

So how much worse can they get?


PS. Yeay for NipponIchi and Atlus.

It's about SE's general failures, so it belongs here.

SE has become disconnected with what their market wants. They have this idea that they can dictate to consumers what they want to buy.

Pretty much. Poor research, poor communication, and a general stubbornness seem par for the course for them lately. Bad habits that likely formed from their many years of being unable to do wrong in the eyes of their fanbase.

I think it really goes back to about the time they tried to do that FF:SW movie. They were starting to go south before then (the FF anime wasn't very FF) but when the movie bombed, it forced square to merge with enix. They've been having as many misses than hits since then. FFX-2 anyone?

Take last year or so:
-FF13
-FF14
-Nier
-The other Nier that couldn't be released in the US because it had a futanari lead
-Front Mission whatever

Not a lot of home runs in that group. Then there's DQ9, not bad by itself, but a let down from 8 which was great. If you ask me, it's probably their portable games and 3rd party things they've been publishing which are keeping them profitable.

Outside of gaming, they've had their profits fall and their stocks drop a bit over the last year. Their stocks most recent high mark was just before october '10 (I wonder what happened then?) and since then their shared lost about 25% in price. Even that was about half of what it was in '08. Even if they don't listen to their fans (I'm still not sure that they are), it seems they also aren't concerned about their stockholders either.

Why should they think otherwise? They've been proving for years that you can sell games on name alone.

I think they've grown too big so the best talent can no longer shine there. It's a shame too, because their older stuff is magnificent.

Thing is, I felt the RPG magic again playing Birth By Sleep on PSP. The story, the gameplay, it was there. It felt like SE in their PSX/PS2 heyday. Maybe they just don't know what the hell to do with next-gen consoles.

No, they lost a huge portion of their talent.

They now are a mill for starry eyed young blood to get in a year or so, and then bounce to other projects, because they get jaded by the culture there.

Which is awful for SE, but great for the resumes of the fresh developers they pick up.

Most of their portable titles have been pretty good. The next gen consoles are just too powerful, and they seem to focus on flashy graphics and cutscenes.

Back during the PS1 era pretty much any game made my squaresoft was an excellent game. Last really good game they made IMO was Final Fantasy X.

Yeah. Take the race track scene in FF13. They probably put in a ton of details and work for parts of it you can barely see, much less appreciate. It was a pretty game, like 12 and 14, but like those games, there also wasn't much to it.

You're very welcome. Yet when it comes to Square Enix, most people still don't entirely get the meaning of it. This may in fact merely seem like it because I frequent Gamefaqs, but that aside. The vocal people are simply getting to me, I guess.

So, aside from portable games, what was the last really great game that SE did? DQ8?

It seems like all they want to make nowadays is pseudo-MMOs, which is kinda sad because to date they've only had one okay MMO, and that was a bit of an EQ ripoff.

Really? SE has one of the only MMOs out there that isn't an EQ ripoff. Have you ever even played it?

Why would anyone exclude portables? They're developed by Square Enix, they may just as well be great games. That said, I liked FFXIII a lot, the only thing I didn't like was the way the story was presented (which, admittedly, is a fundamental flaw, but doesshould not immediately make for a terrible game). But then again, finding a game "great" is entirely subjective.

And as for Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant... While they may not have been the greatest games ever, they were new and original concepts (I would not know about NIER, I haven't played it). With just about every new concept, it's hit or miss. Which is most likely why most publishers and developers don't risk it and stick to sequels, SE included.

XIII was one of the worst FF games that I've played. It was pretty, and the story was passable, but that's all that was good about it. The battle system was stripped down to barely existent, and the world was pretty much one long hallway. The entire game consisted of running straight ahead to the next fight, where all you had to to was chain things to death, and occasionally turtle up on the tougher mobs. The only thing that made the last battle hard at all was the instant death move that would end the fight if hit your party leader.

At least it was better than XII, I couldn't even be bothered to finish that abortion of a game.

Is it weird that I hated FFXIII for all the same reasons above but thoroughly enjoyed FFXII?

Well, 13 and 12 aren't really similar at all. If anything, 12 focused too much on side-quests and open-world exploration.

Also, I would suggest Valkyrie Profile 2 as the last great SE title that came out on console.

I wouldn't call it stumbling when your new (major) titles sell more than ever before. FFX sold 6.x million, FFXII sold something like 5.2 mil, FFXIII sold 5.5 mil. SE's overall profit last year was something like 107.5 mil.

XI (at least a year ago--dunno now) still had one of the largest subscription bases of MMOs (dwarfed by WoW, of course, but the only one I can think of that did better is EVE).

XIV is sucking, of course. Frankly, the problem with that game seems to be that they launched a freaking year or two earlier than they should have.

You may not like the games, but I definitely wouldn't call that stumbling or failing.

And the new Dues Ex, at least, looks amazing (if they deliver on the trailer). I don't know anything about other titles.

Spirits Within was a financial disaster for SE, and I believe it has lost the most money of any animated motion picture yet to be produced. XIV is going through a massive redevelopment, and MMORPG are extremely expensive projects.
