Personally I've liked each Final Fantasy. The one nice thing about them all is they're all different (exception being X and X-2) and so I can find things I really enjoy about each.
Ultimate favorite probably has to be IX, absolutely loved the world and story in that one, even if Steiner was a tad annoying. My wife loved Vivi, she kept calling him Orco though
My personal preferences aside, if you're going to argue that the 'hallway' people seemed to bandwagon like crazy simply got wider, how is that different from other final fantasies? In terms of story they are all relatively structured, and no matter how wide that hallway gets, it'll diverge in the end with the same ending anyone else gets.
I didn't actually play XIII, so I could be wrong here, but did you mean converge? I'm having a hard time understanding your argument otherwise.

I can only rank those I've actually played, but I'd probably do it like this:
(Note--this is how much I enjoyed the game, not a more technical evaluation of the game itself)
10>13>7>9>8>4>12>10-2
-10 was the first FF game I played, so it has a special place in my heart.
-I never do sidequests and minigames unless they offer a useful, immediate reward--I always wait until near the end. So 13 didn't bother me. And I loved the battle system.
-Had I played 7 when it was released, I'd probably have liked it more.
-I have no frickin' clue what 8 was about. And the battle system was so-so. I hated how enemies leveled up with you. Easy to exploit.
-I never beat 9--it's on my to-do list. Until then, It'll have to stay put as I mostly reserve judgment. Good battle system though.

Can't/won't rank 4 and 5. I've played the DS version of 4 but I got stuck at the halfway through battle Golbez and the part where you get Rydia back, and I simply never finished 5 because I went to play other stuff. I've never finished IX and XII either, XI's final boss didn't make sense, owned me and I never retried. XII I've been meaning to finish (I wasn't very far), but I don't have room to wire my PS2 at the moment.
As for ranking, I went with overall enjoyment when I first played them. All of them are great and unique games, though. Even XIII, which barring some major storytelling 'faults' is still a good game in it's own right. VI surprised me the most, I started playing it because I liked Terra in Dissidia, and figured I'd try it out. I've played the game for a week on any free moment I had, got all the secrets and whatnot. Loved it. X because it has a great story, I'll neglect to take X-2 into acccount, but the original ending felt unique because it wasn't "and the world was saved and the hero/heroine lived happily ever after". VII because it was the first FF game I played, loved the part where you climbed the golden shiny wire of hope. IX because I remember liking it a lot, I just don't remember the story details. VIII was a good game, but the biggest downside was the lack of any difficulty whatsoever. This made the game for me, though.
Overall, I love the Final Fantasy series but I do find the Tales series to be a tad more likeable. Tales of the Abyss is my favorite videogame, and a second playthrough is long overdue.
As for Final Fantasy XIII-2, what do you guys think about this? It's either a chance to set things right and grant a better view on the world and mythology of FFXIII, or another sequel on a (saleswise, no doubt) succesful game. I'm in no ways interested in the thought of a sequel because the ending was just fine, but I'll probably buy it anyways.

At least with Final Fantasy you know the games will see the sun outside of Japan. You can never bet on it with Tales.

Well me, I'm officially done with the Final Fantasy series. I haven't felt that I've gotten my money's worth on the last couple titles (XIII and XIV). I really felt burned on those purchases...more so than any game in my recent memory that I can think of. I'll be giving any of their new titles a wide berth for the time being. I won't consider them unless the response is overwhelmingly positive and the game still appears to suit me after I do a ton of research. I've got a guy feeling that XIII-2 won't be swaying me, though.
It's a shame. The FF name used to assure me that I was in for a deep, quality product. Now, the experiences always seem so diluted.

As said, I did try XIII, but only played about 20 hours of it. It never changed in those 20 hours, either. I avoided almost all the fights I could, which actually made some bosses difficult, but not impossible. But seriously, it was the same formula - 2 screens, cutscene, 2 screens, cutscene. I didn't care for it.
I'll be in for the long haul, I'm always up for a good RPG and it doesn't seem there are too many studios out there making them anymore. Resonance of Fate has been a welcome surprise to a lackluster offering of RPG's on any of the consoles. Kinda feels like the genre is dying [:sad:]

Keeping in mind that up until 5 on my list rate as extremely awesome games and are no way inferior. This is personal opinion, but none of these games have had as much time put in by me as the first five in my rankings.
Also, glad you mentioned Sa-ga Frontier. I loved that game. It had so much nonlinearity. Lute's saga especially - right after the beginning you can go to the end dungeon. Or... you can master all the awesome skills you want, or learn time/space magic, whatever.
Rouge/Blue's scenario was my favorite because the magic you get makes you invincible. Stasis, go!
I never played Saga Frontier I/II but I did play the Final Fantasy Legend games for the Gameboy. It was when I was pretty young, and can't remember much other than finding pieces of a ship and my characters evolving/mutating as I fed them parts of enemies I fought. I never played any of the Romancing Saga games either.
I'm thinking of playing Saga Frontier I/II, and I saw that Final Fantasy Legends 2 and 3 were out for the DS in Japan (obviously called by their SaGa names, and not FFL). I wonder if they will come to the US on the DS as well?
Are the earlier games in the series any good? I remember liking Final Fantasy Legends but can't remember anything about the storylines, other than in one of them the world is flooding because someone left the faucet on in Heaven (or something like that).
