Character Creation and PvPFollow

With the new coming of GW2, we have several races to choose from. From what I understand none of the races will have attribute differences, just a couple race skills and appearance is all that differs from say a Norn Elementalist and an Asuran Elementalist.

With the new PvP (especially world PvP) it seems to be really "skill" and "awareness" based. Something that is a HUGE part of this in other games is positioning and using the terrain to your advantage on the battlefield. That is why in almost any other game, the "smaller" races reap the most benefiet in terms of hiding and such. Say you're an Asuran Warrior and you were out soloing in WvW, and you run across a full group of enemies. You can just run behind and boulder or a tree and you're not likely to be seen. On the flip side, if you're a Norn warrior you try to hide behind the same rock... 3/4 of your body won't be covered by it.

If there is no incentive to really play a different race other then cosmetic looks, why would any serious PvPer roll such a large and noticeable character? I can't see the racial abilities being a HUGE deal, and if anything they will all be balanced to a point where it won't matter.

Does anyone else see this being a problem?

The small race does frequently have an advantage in PvP, and this is a valid concern. That said, we also need to know more about hit detection and whether/how much hit boxes scale with model size.

As an example, for a long time in WoW the largest race (Tauren) had significantly larger hitboxes, which allowed them to hit other players in melee through obstructions that were intended to offer complete protection. We can safely assume that such a bug won't survive too long in GW2, but there might be other concerns, such as increased melee range for larger characters (which given the ability to miss and waste attacks might be quite important), ability to block projectiles easier, etc.

That is to say, if you're a warrior planning to take a lot of hits for your squishy allies, will having a larger profile help you in that? Will hit box sizes be normalized across all races?

Hard to say much at this stage of the game, unfortunately.

I think there isn't really enough information to comment on, but to speculate I think every other online game's races are basically there as a cosmetic choice with vary little stat variants (which min-maxers will play). Small characters are pretty unappealing to me and I won't be playing one, its always cool to get a good scale of armor and weapons. Where as some people will like small characters.

Making such a decision at the start of a game that impacts greatly on your character is not a good way to design a game; new players selecting the "weaker" race are hampered when later realising the benefits of another race. Making decisions that affect your class/race as you go along when you have built a knowledge of the game is a nice idea but throwing such a stepping stone to begin can be frustrating.

So I would imagine, the race choice a free cosmetic choice.
