So I've been looking to jump back into Console gaming, and if it wasn't for Call of Duty my PS3 would sit idle.

I'm looking for some Turn based RPG titles for the PS3, but they seem to be hard to come by. Anything that is out for the 360 and PS3 I already have for the 360.

So far I've found:
Cross Edge
Disgaea 3
Trinity Universe

Why is the next gen hating on Turn based so much Smiley: frown

(Ya, I forgot to mention FFXIII... but... ya...)

I'm sure bioware and action RPGs have something to do with it. People expect the PS3 to have a wow factor and turn based just isn't wow.

You can always get Tactics off the PSN Store.

But I already own it for the PSX and the PSP. PSOne games from the PSN aren't an option since I already own them.

I don't know about PS3 but Lost Odyssey for Xbox is a hell of a good game, and you can pick it up for about £10 now since it's a couple of years old.

Great graphics, great battle system. It's actually HARD in places. Which is rare in turn based RPG's.

Storyline isn't groundbreaking but some parts are exceptional (haunted mansion freaked me out a bit). And some of the dream stories really get the old heart strings pulling.

That's probably the last turn based game I played (XIII doesn't count. It barely counts as a game.) and it's also one of the best.

While there are indeed very little Turn Based RPG's around, there's a couple that are more action-oriented. Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Eternal Sonata (Surprisingly good game). There's also Atelier Rorona, I've been meaning to pick it up but I haven't had the spare money. There's also Ar Tonelico III in March 2011.

There's also a Sega game called Resonance of Fate. I think it's turn based, but I'm not very sure about how the game plays. As far as I'd heard you either love it or hate it. Last Rebellion, but that's glitchy/horrible as far as I know. There's Enchanted Arms too, which is very, very good according to my brother. I also wholeheartedly agree with above's Lost Oddysey statement. The tale/dream sequences leave quite an impact and the game definitely has a very good atmosphere.

I hadn't heard of Atelier Rorona before, or Ar Tonelico III. Resonance of Fate I had heard of, but remember it being something similar to a Tactical RPG with guns? (Devil May Cry comes to mind every time I think about it). Maybe I'm mistaken. Last Rebellion is a new one in my mind. I'll have to look it up.

I have played Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean Last Hope, and a handful of other RPGs available on the 360. I liked Blue Dragon as well. Same company (or part of the same company) behind Lost Odyssey. Looks like a Dragon Quest game because Toriyama was the artist behind it.

I do own Valk Chronicles. I've really tried to get into it, but I can't.

Maybe I'll pick up Golden Sun DS while I wait to decide on a PS3 RPG.

The first two games were definitely worth playing.

From what I've heard, Atelier Rorona is like Atelier Annie but you don't keep all the items after you win.

Ar Tornelico is something of a cross between an RPG and a love sim (sans sex). In the first you could develop your relationship (powers) for all the girls, but in 2 after a point you had to pick one and she'd be the only one to get stronger. It's still on my list of games to finish.

I played the first two on the GBA, though I did play them backwards. I purchased Golden Sun the Lost Age without knowing it was a sequel. Then I played Golden Sun afterwards.

Because turn based RPGs have developed very little since the SNES and many companies have realized that you can sell RPGs to the FPS demographic if you have active combat.
KTurner wrote:

I liked the idea and setting, but it had significant balance issues and certain missions were poorly designed, like one were you absolutely could not win if the computer arbitrarily decided to complete the objective within the first two turns.

Eh? Sure most turn based rpgs are easy, but they still have a monopoly on hard because all action rpgs are easy. Kingdom Hearts hard mode? Easy. Fable? Easy. Dragon Age Nightmare setting? Mind numbingly easy. Turn based RPGs have games like Unlimited Saga, which is Nintendo Hard2.

RoF is nothing like Devil May Cry. It's somewhat of a hidden RPG gem, though the gameplay itself is difficult to get the hang of it's actually pretty fun. Doesn't hurt that it got knocked down from ~45 bucks to ~25 recently at game stop. Give it a try if you're feeling adventurous, I don't think you'll be too disappointed. Just think Steam punk FFXIII with a really huge gun/character customization system and far more difficult battle system. One thing that was somewhat of a letdown though is the fact that there are no recruit-able characters, which is one of my favorite things in an RPG. You start with the same three characters and don't get new ones for the entirety of the game.

In all truth, I've been pretty disappointed with RPG's on the PS3. The only one I haven't been disappointed in is Demon's Souls... though that's not turned based, but is the best RPG on the PS3 IMO.

AS for turned based, the last good set I played was on the PS2 and was SMT: Nocturne and DDS1 & 2.

FF13 was Horrid, it took a ridiculous amount of fanboy stamina to get as far as I could before hurriedly trading to to gamestop for 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Doubt I was much help... but the Shin Megami Tensei games from Ps2 are definately worth checking out.

Ding.

Persona games are fantastic. The dungeons are a tad repetitive in places but it's still fun. Not really like anything I've played before.

I should play them at some point... I got midway into one of them (I think it was 4) then stopped. I don't know why :(

Yea I got about half way through Final Fantasy 13 before losing interest. Farther than I got on Final Fantasy 12 because... ya know I hate Final Fantasy 12 (had to throw that in there for old times sake).

Far as turn based RPG's being easy I guess it depends how you play them. I found if you try to play through them without a strategy guide and without mindless grinding for exp they can be tuff sometimes. Good example was Final Fantasy X. I found a handful of bosses I just couldn't beat without mindless grinding. Then I read an online guide and got a couple of the celestial weapons and the game became stupidly easy (like 2 shot final boss).

Anyways not alot of turn based RPG's on there that I know of. Lost Odyssey was an excellent game although its on the 360. Eternal sonata is a decent (and cheap) game on the Xbox 360 as well although the dungeons were abit mazey if memory serves.

I found Resonance of Fate for 25 dollars at game stop. I picked it up last night and started playing through the battle tutorials. Tonight I think I'll finish the tutorials and hopefully get a hang of the battle system.

Not exactly turn based but I got Nier recently and the reviews were rather harsh, I'm actually having fun with it.

Don't let tri-attack be off putting. It was a pain to figure out, for me, anyway. The battle system has a pretty steep learning curve. I'm still not very far in the game myself. Isn't the city great though? I love how it's designed.

Nier is a wonderful experience of a game. The music is fantastic. I can understand why people dislike the game as it's a bit fetch questy but it's definitely worth playing imo, another gem.

One tip about nier, Don't get put off when you have to catch the fish for Yonah. You'll want to throw your controller after countless attempts to land the damn thing but after you realize where to fish it all becomes easy. Instead of trying to fish where the old man gives you the fishing rod, walk through the tunnel to the other side of the beach. The fish you're looking for are there. This will save you about 45 minutes of absolute rage. They imply you're supposed to fish around where you're given the rod, but the fish there are too high level for you to land without trouble so you'll only be able to catch rusty cans and buckets. Many people give up the game at this point, lols.

Tri-Attack is where I stopped the first night. I read the in game tutorial and tried over and over and over to make it work. I couldn't figure out how to initiate the Tri-attack. It wasn't until I busted out the physical manual that I figured it out. The manual in the game cartridge explained it better than the manual in the game. Then it turns out that even though I did the tri-attack, the tutorial didn't count it until I actually killed an enemy with the Tri-Attack.

Today when I played again I started them all over and was able to do it very quickly. I really liked the Smackdown attacks. Then I moved on to my first real battle in the Alley to get some Energy Hexes and finish a few missions.

All I can say is, I was NOT prepared for that first battle.

Usually a turn based RPG starts out with easy monsters that normal attacks can take care of quickly and easily, just to get you a bit of experience and items. That assumption led to me dying in my first two attempts at a random battle. It seems like this game forces you to use the Hero attacks pretty much all the time to avoid damage and to deal larger amounts of damage faster. Leader Attacks are a must, and are not penalized since the other creatures still provide drops even if you only kill the leader. Normal attacks are too slow to start a battle with, the charge gauge doesn't fill fast enough to even let you get an attack off before you are interrupted or your turn runs out.

After realizing I couldn't just take it easy and use normal attacks even on the garbage fights, the game got easier. But I still have only put about an hour and a half into it (40 minutes of which were the first moving around and all the battle tutorials).

So far the game is fun, the customizable weapons look like a nice feature from what I've seen in the Tinkerer/Desynther/Store but I can see it getting quite hard.

Yeah, I'm not too far into the game myself, It definitely looks promising though.

I know you're looking for turn based but I have to touch back on the Nier subject. As someone suggested it earlier. I think the most accurate way I've heard it described is that it's like 'The Legend of Zelda' for adults. The game has so much charm, It's something I'm glad I didn't miss because of sour reviews. Next time you're out if you see Nier I highly recommend it. It also recently got knocked down from a ~$50 price point to ~$25 like RoF. Anyway, happy gaming!

The Chapter 1 boss in RoF is kicking my ***, tried three times and gave up, went back and started grinding/farming again. So far I have a hang of things, but I haven't tried fighting the boss again. I found it pretty easy to farm Oil Drums from the Oil Drum Carrier and get Scrap Irons to craft my upgrades and sell for money. I was surprised when I went through my items and found that the Meat that the goblins drop sells for a whopping 500 rubies each, I had a ton of those.

I think I'll have to make better use of healing items to avoid losing my bezels and dying. His cannon just packs a huge punch, and it didn't take long for me to be out of bezels and running around like a scared little girl doing her best to be overly dramatic about being scared. (yes... Critical Condition is ridiculous).

This morning I tried again, changing up my strategy a bit. I completely dominated the boss, didn't have to use any healing items like I thought I would. Just had to be smart. The first boss definitely is a test of how well you understand the battle system, and how effectively you can use it.

One thing I hadn't really realized before is changing targets mid hero attack. I tried it a bit in a few of the fights in the dungeon before the boss. Sending out Zephyr to deal enough scratch damage to everything in the battle in one attack, and then sending one of my Direct damage dealers out next turn to destroy each enemy. Makes fights go a lot quicker. The battle before the boss gave me a little trouble until I realized I could just kill everything in one turn rather than focus all on one enemy at a time. Scratch damage seems to be very important.

I got Resonance of Fate for Christmas and love the game so far, surprised there wasn't more press about it. Enough familiar RPG elements while at the same time enough new things to make it interesting. Smiley: thumbsup

I picked up White Knight Chronicles and the game appeals a lot more to my Turn-based desires. Not that I don't like Resonance of Fate, but I put it on hold until I finish White Knight Chronicles.

White Knight Chronicles just has so much stuff to do. And while not completely turn based, it's close enough for me. The GeoNet system is pretty nice, but I kind of feel like cheating when I can go get supplies that I can't find usually so I can do the Binding.

I never actually "Grind" but I explore every pathway before reaching my destination. I feel very over leveled. I can kill bosses without having to use my White Knight. I do use it just to speed up the battles, but I don't have to.

Quests on the other hand... I haven't been able to finish any of those. I did a level 8+ one solo at level 16, and two troll bosses at the end wiped the floor with me.
