Possible New PlayerFollow

#1 Nov 20 2010 at 7:53 PM Rating: Decent
Hey guys, i've never played Lotro in my life but its downloading right now. Heard its free to play so I am going to try it out, I've played FFXI FFXIV and WoW over the past 7 years and I'm wondering what the similarities between this game and those are. Is the gameplay slow? Is there solo content? Any help for a possible new player will help :) Thanks!

If what you enjoy in WoW is:
Instances
Raids
PvP
You will be disappointed in LotRO.
If what you enjoyed in FFXI is:
XP parties
Focused group content
The Job system
You will be disappointed in LotRO.
If what you enjoyed in FFXIV is:
Anything
You have problems.

Now, what LotRO does right is:
Story driven leveling experience
Diverse and fun crafting system
Skirmishes
Player interaction (Including the player music system)

What's similar to WoW:
There are instanced dungeons, complete with a teleport to dungeon option for groups.
The game is MOSTLY solo friendly. You WILL come across quests that you will have a tough time doing alone.
Streamlined questing

What's similar to FFXI:
There's lots of grinding
More 'realistic' graphics

What's similar to FFXIV:
It's on the PC. There's also limits in LotRO as to how much of certain things you do per day, but it's nothing to do with actual levelling.

When you have it all downloaded, I'll note that a lot of the people on these forums are on the Meneldor server, so it's a good place to start out.
Also, I should note that on the 29th there is a HUGE content patch coming, which unlocks 2 classes, 2 expansions, the 65 level cap, a few zones, a few weapon options, changes to Lore-Master (BM / Mage + RNG / Hunter), changes to the vault system, vanity pets, and a LOT more.
If you have the patience, it may be worth your time to wait until then to get started, especially if you plan on playing an Elf or Dwarf, as their starting zone is getting revamped as well.
