ArenaNet Blog: When It's ReadyFollow

#1 Nov 17 2010 at 6:51 PM Rating: Decent
Eric Flannum has put up a new blog post on the ArenaNet Blog - When It's Ready

Quote:
Let’s take professions for example. We’ve released information on each of our professions when we felt confident that the basic mechanics and skills for that profession were reasonably stable and when we could afford to take time from our development schedule to make the videos, web pages, and articles that passed the information along. We do try to make estimates on when we think we’ll be done with each profession so that we can start planning out our videos and articles, but as I mentioned before, those are just estimates. Several months back we took a look at all eight professions and tried to figure out what order they would likely be ready and when to reveal them. Today that order is very different; some professions have moved up in the schedule while others have required more work than we first thought and are not actually ready for us to talk about. The necromancer’s profession ability (Death Shroud) alone took a ton of iteration before we arrived at something we were happy with.

makes it feel like the game will take even longer to release than what it felt like to begin with, *sigh*. Nice of them to take the time and try and ease our worries about lack of info though.

They can take all the time they want once that 7 hero build hits Guild Wars 1.

I think it was a nice damage control blog post. After a few months of no profession, people would be bursting with even more rage than they are now.

If they start designing unique fingerprints for characters I'm going to blame you.

Its a bit unfortunate that such a post is necessary at all, but it seems a side effect of their way of developing the game. As much as I moan about NCSoft, I'm glad ANet have a backer that's willing to give them the time to do what they need to to make the game they want to make. Certainly appreciating a look behind the curtain.

I don't know that it is. It goes to show how hooked Anet have gotten us on information, and how passionate we all are about the game.

Good to hear ncsoft are doing right by them, too.

It WAS nice to hear that. :Dis
I thought it was nice of them to take the time for that, even if it isn't as satisfying as "real" news.

I rather meant 2 things: a) its unfortunate that there is a break in information as I'd much rather be reading about a new feature than a holding message b) Its unfortunate that the MMO industry has us trained to believe everything is planned and will be ready on a deadline and that the (correct) iterative approach to game development doesn't apply to that genre. Think I wrote that original post pre morning coffee. Serves me right really!

I agree with you about the passion though. Must be a community manager's dream :D

That was my thought.

That was the best part about this blog, imo ;)

Who wants to bet 5k that their release date announcement will be a blog post entitled "It's ready"?

Honestly, the blog post is great... but bittersweet. It's so right... yet they seem to have missed a fundamental issue. It's not about professions. It's about information flow. This would be the time to sign up some network guys, the sound guys, Soule, and so on to make some blog posts. Of course they would have to go colder than burning freakin' hot after the con season, but they're nearing the single-digit Kelvin.

I agree 100%! ArenaNet definitely seems to be a quality company, and NCsoft deserves some recognition for allowing NCsoft the time needed to make a great game. Games like Mafia II have been ruined or at least seriously limited due to publishers rushing the developers.

I think whoever they chose to have write the blog post, or be interviewed, it would be taking up precious time right now.

It's definitely been a bit of a shocker to go from full on info every week to this, but honestly I'm just going to chalk it up to some unforeseen event in development and move on.
