ArenaNet has been a little quiet for the last few weeks, leaving Guild Wars 2 fans all over the internet starved for news. Accepting the fact that they weren't ready to break new ground quite yet we decided to revisit a plethora of older topics with Eric Flannum, the Guild Wars 2 design lead.

We cover a lot of familiar ground with WvW, dynamic events, boss fights, and potions, but there's also some very interesting information on a subject we've not heard much about at all: Stealth!

Quote:
GuildFans: Stealth has been confirmed as an ability for certain ranger pets, can we also expect to see players using it?

Eric:
Yes, in fact rangers have a utility skill that allows them to stealth while they are standing still. I know a lot of people immediately jump to the overpowered version of stealth that they’ve seen in some games when anyone brings it up. I do think however that we’ve got a good handle about how to keep stealth in check. Things like limiting stealth by time, not having professions that destroy everyone when attacking out of stealth, having a lot of ground targeted attacks, and stealth detection skills can keep professions who use stealth in balance with everyone else.

I liked everything concerning stealth except for "stealth detection skills." The moment I feel the need to swap out one of my other utility skills for a stealth detection skill, I'll really be upset. Stealth should be something that will provide a slight advantage to professions that use it if someone isn't paying attention - exactly how stealth works IRL. I don't want to have to "need" to have a skill to detect someone stealthing.

The main thing however, is that we don’t have anything ready to announce at this time. When we release information we want to be very certain that everything we talk about is in the game and working up to a basic level such that we believe that we won’t have to make dramatic changes to it.

I kinda had the feeling that this was the case. Sometimes not having info to release is because they aren't finished with things. The classes they announced were probably the first ones they were more or less "done" with and/or required the fewest changes from GW. I've got a feeling mesmers and sassis are making it back, but they are probably going to play differently than in the last game or anet started working on them later so it might be longer before they post something on them.

Stealth while standing still is certainly something I can live with.
