MondesPersistants: A Brief Discussion of Guild Wars 2 PvPFollow

French gaming site MondesPersistants managed to grab some time with Izzy at the recently passed 'Paris Games Week' to talk about Guild Wars 2 PvP.

The article isn't exactly exhaustive in detail, but it's a subject on which we've heard very little about so far, so every little helps. Here's some quick highlights:

- One of its references, concept-wise, is soccer which is easy to understand, easy to watch and visually accessible to everyone. You can be a spectator, a casual player or a professional. Soccer also offers a lot of tactical or competitive possibilities.

- Ping dependant mechanics such as interrupts are likely to go, due to being competition-unfriendly. This is perhaps illustrated by the lack of enemies cast bar (at least in the demo).

- Map size for structured PvP (5v5) will be slightly larger maps than 4v4 areas on GW1. Izzy wants to make PvP very tactical, and you need enough space to allow that.

Check out the full interview over on MondesPersistants.

I think the spectator thing is SUPER important. Just look at Starcraft 2 and how much attention that gets thanks to dudes like Day9, Tasteless, Artosis etc. Spectating/commentating is huge in competitive sports/e-sports, and Anet should do everything they can to encourage that.

Agreed 100%. I don't know how NCSoft has fared in marketing competitive e-sports in the past (aside from the early season tournaments of Guild Wars Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall.) Arenanet needs to make a BIG impact quick on the Structured PvP of Guild Wars 2 when it releases, so they will have sponsors lined up to fund the prizes, costs, and promotions for the Competitive Events.

I'm just excited to be able to PvP as 5v5 instead of 8v8. The gaming itself was fun for 8v8, but trying to get 8 people together to play competitively on a regular basis was a nightmare.

Yeah, it would definitely be great, being able to Spectate the high level Guild v Guild & Tournament matches. It's the same thing I do with Starcraft 2 and it's commentaries.

I also hope the World PvP gets its own Spectator Mode as well, because it could provide for some interesting uses for people like the machinma community. Being able to record epic battles, from a camera perspective would be interesting indeed. However there will need to be some limitations such as:
  • Having the camera lock onto only players, from your own server; to prevent spying on enemy player's movements.
  • No in-game chat allowed, for the same reason as above.
  • Not being able to join, right after exiting Spectator mode (some kind of cooldown).

I think a Spectator system like this could work well in World PvP.
