Looking for a good crafting game.Follow

Well, I've been playing WoW for the past while and have gotten bored with it, maybe completely. I really don't have any will to level my toons up, and would like another route for "building" my character.

So, I'm in the search for a good crafting game. I'm not looking for a heart + soul crafting game really, but rather a good MMORPG with good crafting. I used to play FFXI a loooooooonnng time ago and loved the crafting. Even if I never got past 50ish woodworking from lack of time, I only played until I was lvl 40 and didn't get back into it before starting to play WoW. I would like to see another crafting system that is long enough to hold my interest and makes actual valuable items. The WoW economy for crafted items is mostly lower than the materials needed to make such things. Not surprising, as the time it takes to harvest items is longer than the single click it takes to make them. Also, you are required to raid for many new recipes, which I only do casually.

So, I really don't think I want to start back up with FFXI this far into the game and FFXIV seems to be quite the bust with a very different crafting system.

Anyone have any recommendations?

EQ2's system was pretty fun. I don't know about EQ's system, but I bet it would be fairly similar.

Haha, I strongly considered just putting that, but I don't think it's what he was looking for. It should be though, definitely.

Minecraft is great, but not really a "crafting" game... the crafting list is actually somewhat small. You can BUILD a lot though!

There's a new MMO out called Perpetuum that lets you control a giant mech, and apparently it has a heavy focus on crafting. That might be up your alley if you want an MMO. I can't vouch for the rest of the game, though - I tried it in Beta for two hours and could not understand how to do even the simplest tasks.

EQ2 probably has the best crafting of any MMO that I've played. Did too little crafting in Fallen Earth to really test, but it is supposedly one of the better crafting systems out there. Claims that 95% of what's available will be player crafted.

iirc you can level up in lotro with crafting.

fallen earth supposably has a pretty big crafting system where you can build cars out of scrap metal and rubber and stuff. get all the stuff in your bags and set your queue to run while you're offline.

i don't play either game but it might be worth checking out.

EQ's system is actually quite dull. Almost everything is either store bought or a mob drop so there's no "resource collection" outside of farming mobs and hoping they drop what you want. Then you toss it into a box, cross your fingers and hit combine. Generally speaking, if it works you get a new thing and if not, your stuff is destroyed and all you get is a crushing sense of loss.

EQ and EQ2 crafting systems are in no way alike.

Hmmm. I'm looking for more of a in-the-past fantasy RPG if possible. I don't know if I'd particularly like a futuristic RPG.... I keep those for my RTS games.

I'm also a one game kind of guy. I'll pick something up that I like and play it casually for years. I really don't have the cash to spend trying a bunch of different games since I'm still going to school AND I bought a house. I haven't even looked at any of the games that have come out recently in any genre. Yet, after MMOs, I NEED to play online against others, or else I simply race through a storyline and never return to the game again. I also get bored of shooters and any RTS, even online, because after a round is done, all your work is gone. It feels like groundhog day after a bit, although I do enjoy fine tuning my strategies.

Maybe I'm just hopeless? :P
The more I think about it though, the more I feel like buying up a bunch of cheaper old RTS games and going from there. So many I haven't tried yet, and I would love to see some of the newer graphics on my new(ish) rig.

If its still running, you can probably get a free trial for Vanguard for a week or two. Best crafting system I've seen in a high fantasy game, and a great NPC dialogue game too.

Those, along with the huge world, were the game's selling points to me. Unfortunately, it was pretty empty by the time I got there.

I know the current state of XIV is really bad on many fronts and I'm not trying to deny that. HOWEVER if crafting is absolutely the main thing you want to do in an MMO you really can't go wrong with XIV.

Even as it is now the crafting is several times deeper and just more fun to do than it was in XI. The system is built so that if you just want to grind the easy recipes you can use the quests that give the materials automatically so it's pretty easy to test each craft to level 15 without any gil investment.

Most importantly when crafting in XIV it feels like a game rather than running a micro management application.

I was just about to post a suggestion of ff14 as a joke and then I saw this.

The crafting is bad in that game and if you want to make a single final piece you either have to have multiple disciplines, or find items without an AH. Plus there's always the problem of getting crystals that you need.

Even with those things aside, I couldn't stand how crafting worked during beta.

Seconded.

XIV crafting is, like most of the game, good in concept but poorly implemented.

Give it a year or so and it might be spectacularly good... but then again, the game servers might be closed if subscriptions keep dropping :(

My advice is wait for SW:TOR. Bioware sound like they're building one hell of a game. Crafting looks good too... your crewmates basically control it. But you can do it too. It's kind of hard to describe, and I'm not that up to speed on it myself. Check out their forums if you're interested.

On a side note, if Mr Admin Person reads this, are we getting a TOR page on alla?

I'd think they'd make it P4P before closing it for good. Also this is SE so I'm sure they've got a little pocket depth.

TOR looks really bad to me. TOR looks like a generic MMO with a shooter on rails minigame. Plus I think a lot of the game is supposed to be soloed which leaves me scratching my head.

The only advice I can offer is that if you're really interested in crafting, FFXI isn't the way to go lol. It can be fun, but I find it more of a supplementary thing to the rest of the game; at least when I played.

When I played XI, you could easily make crafting the bulk of your play time... if you had a job leveled that could solo BCNM fights (often Bst), which meant you could work to get your own high-end mats.

Of course, that was still craft dependent.

Regardless though, it was way more difficult to exclusively craft, as some items were just way too expensive to buy and still make a profit on the final product.

But if you learned where to get items cheap and easily, you could totally make a nice profit if dedicated. And gardening just added to that.

Factor in days of the week, time and lunar faze just added to that (making it sometimes easier to get High Quality items, other times skill-ups and sometimes higher gains) that really rewarded you for learning the system.

And most importantly, there were worthwhile items to craft at all skill levels with all crafts. It made it feel like you were rewarded for leveling a craft as you went. Of course, it wasn't perfect, but it was better than other things I've seen. Until recently, WoW's crafts were useless while leveling. Inscription and JC added some nice low-level benefits, but all the others just meant you were reducing the amount of money you made by dropping a gathering profession. And actual crafting required you to be at cap (and there were level requirements for skill levels).

Honestly, XI was probably the best crafting system I've ever seen in a game. Granted, I've only played a few where crafting actually was a real part of it all. WoW's crafting is realistically a joke. EVE might have a decent one I suppose, but it seems like it gives way too much power to non-crafting market players. I never tried EQ's, having only played a demo. Same with Warhammer. Star Ocean 3 had an... okay... system. But it was frankly too annoying to try and figure out, and WAY too easy to exploit. I like XIII's "crafting" but that's definitely not a core part of the game. I just like the upgrading system in general, lol.

I can't really think of any other games I've played with crafting involved...

Honestly, if you liked FFXI's crafting system, I don't know how you could dislike FFXIV's crafting system.

I've played a few MMOs in my day. Here's my list, best to worst:

EQII - Awesome interface, and once you rented a large enough house to put workbenches and an AH window, lag free to boot

LOTR:O - Fairly good, if basic crafting system. However, the ability to ensure HQ via rare drops was really interesting. Bad thing was that no crafter could be an island ; ;

WoW - A great recreation with some nice perks regardless of the craft you chose

Hellgate: London - Meh, was decent, if slightly useless. Wasn't a true crafting system...

CoH - Not so hot, but at least you could get the recipes in-game

FFXI - Avoid. Nothing pisses you off more than being 98 levels higher than the sync you're doing, and have it blow up for no readily apparent reason.

FFXIV - Avoid and destroy any copies you see on sight. It's a reverse pyramid for a lot of the crafts, and is even MORE random that FFXI. Terrible, horrible, ungodly bad system
