So one of the big pieces of Guild Wars that set the game apart for me was the fact that I didn't necessarily need to find a group if I wanted to solo a big bad monster. All I had to do was "hire" some henchmen. Is this changing in GW2? Are we going to be more of a one man wrecking crew so we don't need all those little allies?

I hope so, and I'm pretty sure that is the case.

Henchmen might have been convenient to play with, but the poor AI made for a pretty frustrating experience. Heroes were almost too good, being more reliable if not better than a random PUG player, and discouraged grouping with others.

I feel that as long as the game has a large population people should be strongly encouraged to collaborate with each other, and it sounds like ArenaNet has nailed that with the dynamic grouping system. If there are occasions when someone would rather play alone then they should be able to do exactly that, rather than rely on a bunch of dimwitted AI characters to make it viable to do so.

The companion system was what they had originally planned on, but I think even that's gone away at this point. They had planned on that system replacing henchmen and heroes. At the moment, it doesn't look like we'll need either in GW2.

It saddens me to see the AI removed. As a young boy I grew up with AI. Look at them now.

But, Guild Wars 2 is an entirely different beast so here's hoping.

7 hero parties would certainly be interesting in Guild Wars, but really I don't think there will be a need for it in Guild Wars 2. Given the persistent world and that ability to players to work together on the fly, the inclusion of AI controlled allies seems a little unnecessary. Frankly I like thinking I'll be able to solo most places if I want.

The companion system has been completely scrapped. You can even solo most of the PvE game content if you want, as in, you don't even need to join a team. Of course, most dungeons will probably not be soloable... apart from some dungeons tied to your personal storyline, it seems.

Anyway, they scrapped it for the reason it would cause a lot of lag on the servers, plus it's kind of an excess having a hero/henchmen running all the time besides you. It just wouldn't be easy to balance, plus imagine the over-crowded areas?

I seem to remember that when they did a blog on your PCs personality, they mentioned that if you had the right one, a norn who'd usually ask for money to help you would follow you for free. So I'm thinking there might be a few AI followers, but it won't be anything like all the heroes and henchies of GW... at least until the cantha/elonia expansion.

By then, anything is game.

Not exactly... I think you mixed this up with the dungeons system. ;)

As a matter of fact, certain NPCs will follow you in the dungeons... particularly in the storyline mode of the dungeons. These NPCs will mostly be the ex-members of Destiny's Edge guild. You will not have any direct command over them, although you can tell them to stay or to follow you. They will, of course, be less powerful than your average player in the way that you can't modify their abilities.

yeah, have a strong feeling that were will be much more capable of soloing content in gw2 if no one is around to help us. not to mention stuff should scale down to single player if no one else is around. an exception would be dungeons though where u pretty much will have to have a 5man party to finish.
