I had forgotten what a truly great RPG felt like. Dragon Age: Origins was the last one I'd consider "good," but it didn't feel as fresh as KOTOR did.

Bioware is sex.

Almost a shame they've been bought by EA and are slowly (read: quickly) being absorbed into that mess.

Give it a few years and we'll see how much Bioware is left in Bioware.

Every single bit if I had to guess. EA and Bioware were perfectly compatible businesses before the acquisition.

It's unfortunate that you don't know people who work there like I do (i.e. inside track). Yes, Bioware is based here in Edmonton.

KOTOR 1 is a masterpiece.

KOTOR 2 with the restoration patch is one of the greatest games of all time.

Both games are fun to play as the bad guy, but you actually feel bad for doing some of the things you do. KOTOR 2 takes it to a new level... you have to actually manipulate your party members to get them on your side.

I've been playing them lately and I forgot just how difficult they can be, even on normal difficulty. But then again, I suck at games.

I can't wait to see what Bioware pull out of the bag in SWTOR. 300 years after Revan... we'll finally get closure on her story :)

And Bioware are being absorbed by EA? Really? I haven't seen any evidence of this.

Even still, you have to admit that EA doesn't exactly have the perfect track record.

Whether or not Bioware is still Bioware down the road remains to be seen (and I hope they are). It's just that EA has this habit of making everything most things suck.

No, EA just removes the element of creativity and turns companies into machines that churn out mass appeal games. This often has the effect of the games being considered crap by many, but if you're a Madden fan then you don't consider Madden 20XX to be a craptacular remake.

Buying Bioware would be a great move for EA. Their design policies are very similar, but EA has focus on mass appeal sports game and FPS games while distinctly lacking mass appeal RPGs, which although a small market is still quite sizable. If EA acquired Bioware they'd pretty much tell them to keep doing exactly what they're doing.

Hence the most things suck part. I was probably exaggerating with the word "suck", I do that a lot, but Madden (and I'm sure other games I can't think of off the top of my head) is an exception to the general rule that EA's games aren't as great as they could be.

I agree. I certainly see the logic behind buying Bioware. They make a bunch of games people love, which creates sales. Why mess with something that works? Hopefully they leave it that way.

Dragon Age: Origins was published by EA.

That's fairly irrelevant though. Publishing has nothing to do with having an ownership interest in another company. It just means that one company has a distribution network that the other wishes to use.

I'm surprised nobody bothered to even look at Wikipedia.

Purchased in 2007, they already put the RPG/MMO groups through a restructuring in 2009.

Hmm, now I'm tempted to play KOTOR. It's one of those games I missed that I always meant to play. But I still havent finished Force Unleashed 1 and Divinity: II just came out with an expansion pack that looks aweful tempting.

How scalable are the grapics in KOTOR? I know it's pretty old. (2003?) Will the menu's and whatnot scale up comfortably to 1920x1200 ish? Also how many hours of game play is it roughly?

*Edit: Steam forums says it has compatibly problems on new systems and mine is really new. Also no widescreen support. Hmmmm

You can force windowed mode on KOTOR.

Graphics are passable. They scale up reasonably well, but they aren't overly high res textures wise and the animations can be a bit clunky at times.

I like them though. They're good, considering they're 7 years old.

My PC's only 2 years old (ok, so I have Vista, not W7) and it runs perfectly. I bought it from Amazon for about £5.

If you haven't played them, why the hell not? They're epic.

Speaking of DA:O, I just saw the pre-order go up for Dragon Age 2 at my local GameStop, even though the game isn't scheduled for release until March 2011.

I'm excited, but not that excited.

If you preorder before Jan 11th you get a free upgrade to a special edition of some sort.

I loved the KOTOR games!

However Baldurs Gate still has my vote for Biowares greatest RPG series. They are a little dated by todays standards, but if you havent played them, and loved KOTOR and Dragon Age, they are well worth a playthrough.

this reminds me, how have kotor and kotor 2 NOT been added to xbox live's game on demand service? considering some of the crap that's on there, classics like those seem a strange absence.

KOTOR 2 is a mess without the fan made patch to add all the lost content.

However, with it, it's one of the greatest games I've ever played.

KOTOR 1, however... I don't know why it's not on there.

1) Go into the folder where you installed KOTOR or KOTOR2;
2) Open the file called swkotor (or swkotor2)
3) Add the following to the bottom of the graphics options section: AllowWindowedMode=1 (case sensitive)

Your graphics options section should be something like:

[Graphics Options]
Anisotropy=16
Frame Buffer=0
Grass=1
Soft Shadows=1
Shadows=1
Brightness=58
EnableHardwareMouse=1
FullScreen=0
RefreshRate=60
Width=1280
Height=960
V-Sync=0
Texture Quality=2
Anti Aliasing=8
AllowWindowedMode=1

Mess around with screen resolutions to get the best setup for your PC, get the settings right so it runs smoothly while windowed, and you're good to go!

This SHOULD force it. It does for me. If not, I'm afraid I can't help any further.

Yea, I got it working last night, now I need to find a resolution that doesn't look like ***. What would you recommend with native at 1920x1080 widescreen?

You get an automatic upgrade to the signature edition, which includes:

-Some kind of free DLC greatsword, bow, shield and staff.
-A free character and missions.
-The game soundtrack.

Apparently the DLC costs of all that stuff will add up to over $20.

If you plan on buying it anyway, and have the money now, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pre-order.

I have 1600 x 1050 (or something) and those settings look pretty funky to me. Not stunning but hey, it's a 5-6 year old game. It's not going to be full HD. But they aren't maxed out, cos my computer isn't top of the line. You can raise them higher in the menu in-game.

Those settings worked well. Everything was hi res and clear, and I could still see the right hand side of the screen for MSN and stuff.
