I'm curious if any life long fans of Final Fantasy are going to give this game a shot. I've always enjoyed Star Wars and I'm very encouraged by this message:

"While it may not be quite as soon as many fans were hoping for, the extra time gives Bioware a chance to add all those final touches and roll out a nicely put-together game for 2011."

I'll give it a shot, but it's being ruined. EA ruined WAR and SWTOR is next.

I thought about it, as it has potential to be the only MMO that can compete with XI or XIV from a Story aspect... But I have a feeling IF I pla at all it will be one I pick up 6 months to a year from it's release. And by that time hopefully I'll be fully engrosed with XIV.

I literally haven't played a Star Wars game since Dark Forces.

What? XI and XIV are a joke, story-wise. If you want a game that dominates in the field of storytelling, lotro is your mmo. It's literally based off of artuably the most recognized fantasy-fiction trilogy of all time; SWTOR will likely be second best, but will undoubtedly be number one in terms of interactive storytelling, considering that's their niche.

Well, just because it's based on something that is legendary, doesn't mean the current writers will do the lore justice. They have big shoes to fill, sure, but I don't know if it's fair to automatically assume they will be better than SE at storytelling just because of the foundation they are building on.

Just because the source material is rich in lore, doesn't mean the game presents the player with a great story. I've been playing LotRo since it went ftp, and had high hopes of reliving that lore. Honestly however, the quests are similar to WoW in that you are just given a little blurb, and sent off to collect something as you grind quests from one area to the next.

Some people, myself included, enjoy the story in FFXI and FFXIV (to a smaller extent at this point) because the story lines are separate from grinding.

You do realize LoTRO absolutely butchers Tolkien's works, right? And I don't know if you can call LoTRO a good story based game when the developers didn't have to think up any of the basic lore. With Final Fantasy SE created the lore, not a novelist. SWTOR is the same. Bioware doesn't have to create a story, it's already there. I can see pros and cons for both styles, but I don't think it's fair to compare a game with a unique story background with a game that draws upon an IP as huge as the Star Wars universe.

I've read all the books from the Lord of the Rings library, including Silmarillion, dozens of times and I've played LotRO during throughout their Beta and intermittently throughout the games current lifespan and the story telling in the game is nothing to go bonkers about.

Additionally, to say that something current cannot trump something previously successful is like saying "Mankind has reached it's pinnacle, there's no point in writing books, making movies, and making music anymore". Not really a good way to promote original creative thinking, eh?

I'm going to give it a shot. It seems like its actually going to focus on both solo and group play, storyline focused, with a wide variety of classes. Yes I'll have to reroll to try them, but since (they've said) each class will have a unique storyline, I don't think I'll mind.

I don't buy that so called whistleblower's post. Its an annonymous and bitter open letter by a guy ******** about getting fired. I don't find it reliable in any way. I'm sure they're a bit more concerned about what they have developed so far, and are going to try and put in as much effort as they can in the next 6-9 months until release because they've seen whats happened with XIV. A bit of black humor here, but I think FFXIV's biggest achievement could be the increased quality of every other MMO release.

I have no plans to try any other mmo atm... but I have to say storytelling wise... what can a game based on an existing lore offer to me in terms of story? I mean - I've read lord of the rings etc... so what exactly can I hope to be stunned with in LOTRO?

I personally prefer to encounter a new story... not to rehash an old one...

Star wars TOR takes place 300 years after the Xbox games, and 5000 years before the movies, in a period with very little if any lore. Basically bioware's free to insert any story they want in there. Basically everyone should be mostly familiar with the setting, but not know what to expect from the plots, unlike LOTOR.

Yeah... I was more thinking of LOTRO than SWTOR... however I don't really like the setting... lol I am not really into the star wars thing. I could see it being good but I am much more into fantasy games than sci-fi.

If you're serious about your LoTRO question, the vast majority of the leveling-up quests are vague references to the books at best, but most are typical MMO style quests (My kids are hungry, go get me 10 boar haunches). The epic (main story) quests roughly follow the fellowships journey to Moria. After Moria things get vague again (because Turbine became more interested in subscription number than staying true to LoTR) and that's when I quit.

Turbine only has access to the LoTR books and The Hobbit, and zero access to anything else (like The Silmarilon). This means that they hands are tied with certain content.

In summary, if you're a Tolkien expert, you'll be disgusted with LoTRO (ordinary people have "magic" for example). But if you just watched the movies and thought they were cool, you'd probably like LoTRO.

I've been thinking about it for a while, although I wasn't expecting to have time to play both SWTOR and FFXIV, and thought that I would probably just end up playing FFXIV.

I'm still on the fence regarding FFXIV, but if things don't improve a great deal with the forthcoming Nov/Dec updates then I will be leaving the game and looking to SWTOR to provide my MMO fix. I've already considered going back to FFXI, but would rather look for something a little different. I know Bioware do some great RPG's so I'm hoping they will be able to transfer their magic to the online arena.

In summary, I will definately try it. If Bioware don't let us down and FFXIV doesn't improve (Auction House please) I would expect to move to SWTOR, despite being a long term FF fan.

"I'm Commander Shepard and SWTOR is my favourite MMORPG."
