For some reason I am just now learning about this game, even though it has been out for a while.

Has anyone played it-- a Metroid game developed by Team Ninja? It looks incredible. I'm unsure though. I don't have a Wii and the control schemes for Wii games tend to throw me off. Story-wise I am interested because it takes place immediately after Super Metroid, which is my favorite game ever.

I've heard it's a slightly different take on the character of Samus.

I liked it a quite a bit. The cutscenes are front loaded on the game and once you get a couple hours in they spread out. Some people are ok with them, some people hate them more than pretty much anything. I thought the controls were really good and the game is pretty easy. The over the shoulder camera angle was poor but the other two angles worked really well.

Does that guy not read over his commentary before posting it on his website?

Too bad Metroid is Nintendo only. It could have been better if different versions were released for the other consoles.

IGN:

Its focus on story and action makes Metroid: Other M one hell of a ride and a wholly recommended experience: it's an emotional tale and a fun adventure wrapped up in a surprisingly ambitious package.

Overall: 8.5/10

Gamerankings.com:
Quote:
Developed jointly by Nintendo and the celebrated Japanese development studio, Team Ninja, the game also features exciting play options, including the ability to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives, pointer and sideways Wii Remote controller orientation, stunning in-game cinematics and a classic blend of Metroid action and puzzle-solving gameplay.

Overall: 79.78%

Other M is not your typical Metroid experience. The tenets of this venerable franchise are desolate feelings of loneliness coupled with an emphasis on exploring an alien world, but Samus Aran's latest adventure goes in a much different direction than most of its forebears. Intense, close-quarters combat is the backbone of this journey, and the linear level design ensures that you're continually pushing forward. This action-oriented approach removes many of the elements that are core to the franchise, but those holes have been filled with refined battle mechanics that make every fight a thrill. Combat is exhilarating, forcing you to move with precision if you want to stay alive against the swarming alien horde, and the gigantic bosses you square off against test your skills in unpredictable ways without ever feeling cheap. Drawn-out cutscenes do interrupt the breakneck pace of your adventure, and small graphical blemishes and control quirks keep this from reaching the dizzying highs its predecessors are known for. But Other M is still a great adventure that is sure to please longtime fans and bright-eyed newcomers alike.

Overall score: 4/5

But that's Other M: occasionally nonsensical (and always extraneous) story elements wrapped around generally excellent action and fun abilities. When you introduce more plot, you introduce more room for plot holes. And as you delve further into Other M, instead of getting more of the things that work (combat), you get more of the things you don't care about (overwrought story).

Overall rating: B-

Seems like everything Google brings up in a quick search puts it at above average, albeit not amazing.

Ah, Yahtzee :D His reviews are hilarious!

I haven't played the game, but I might try it out if I can find it used for cheap. I loved the original Metroid games, but haven't played them since... oh, high school? Would be worth it to try, but the reviews seem half-hearted at best.

On the topic of Yahtzee, I'm trying to figure out what his top 5 games are. Near as I can tell, they're Portal, Silent Hill 2, Prince of Persia (one of the older ones), Earthbound, and FF3 (aka FFVI). Not positive, because he also positively reviewed RE4. His review on SH2 made me really want to play it.

Yeah. Psychonauts is definitely number one on his list, followed by Silent Hill 2.

Huh. In one of his videos, he had three games he said were his favorites - Portal, Silent Hill 2, and Prince of Persia. In another he had five, with 4 of them blurred out by mosaics, and Prince of Persia directly in the middle.

Gotta look up the review for Psychonauts, I guess!
