Question for Steam users.Follow

#1 Oct 12 2010 at 4:04 AM Rating: Excellent
I just pre-ordered Fallout: New Vegas through Steam. This is my first pre-order with them, and I was just wondering if anyone with previous experience can answer a question for me. On release day, to I have to sit and hammer on the install button until I can weasel a way into the download queue, or will the Steam client just assume that I want it when it is released, and automatically push the download to begin when its available?

Usually a short while before the actual release you can start the pre-download, which just downloads the game but you can't play it yet. So then once it is officially released, there might be a patch or something but you'll be able to play it pretty much immediately. It should keep itself up-to-date automatically.

I laugh at the people that pre-order Bethesda games. As buggy as Fallout 3 was at launch I would figure people would wait until 3-4 patches later.

They only buy a certain amount of keys from the developer, and once those are sold they need to wait for the developer to generate how many thousands of keys needed for the next order. There is no way in hell the devs would give Valve a key generator to keep, too much of a leak risk compared to in-house access control.

True, but how long does it take to generate a million keys? Seconds. I find it shocking that an online service like Steam would let themselves run out of product keys. Mismanagement IMO.

Well if the key generator is anything like the one my company uses it only generates one key at a time, and you have to copy/paste it to the document.

Not only that, but continue to sell the product when they know they don't have any keys for them. At least put a warning up or something cmon!

I laugh at people who dont even bother to know whos developing a game *hint* its not bethesda*hint*

Also OP, do yourself a favour and just pick it up retail, chances are its gonna take a while to install anyway, and the retail disc should be using steam aswell.

Unless you cant get a retail version on release dayt or close to it.

They continue to sell them so, you know, people can contimue to buy them, i swear people will complain about anything, i know i would have been pissed if i tried to buy the borderlands DLC and was told to GFY, instead of just waiting a few days for the keys.

I laugh at people who don't realize that it doesn't matter who develops the game if the publisher forces them to release the game before it's ready *hint* it's Bethesda *hint*.

the publisher has no affect on whether the game is buggy or not, just admit you didnt know who developed the game.

Besides that, of course its gonna have bugs, the dev that actually did make the game are know for it, anything except major gamebreaking bugs wont make a good game bad, only a bad game worse.

And i'd be pissed if i bought a game, DLd it and went to boot it up to have it not work for an unknown amount of time.

No, she had extensive beta testing before release day.

EDIT: Unlike your face.

I guarantee you that it doesn't work the same way as yours; there is no way they could keep up with the demand!

They probably have 1,000+ immigrant workers in one of their sub-buildings getting payed 1 cent for each key they generate.
