Online gaming, WoW and Vanguard... (was forum=21)Follow

#1 Dec 23 2006 at 1:15 PM Rating: Decent
Hello again.
So, I have invested a bit of time in WoW, and when I left I was getting bored at 60. It may be fun when there is more content from xpac. I have another option, a few friends will be getting a game called vanguard when it comes out. They are very excited about the game.

As for my personal experience, my first online game was SWG, which I hated by the end (they ruined it). I played CoH and tried guild wars. EQ and EQ2 were not something I got into. And WoW has been the best online game I have played, but it is not perfect.

From what I can tell, Vanguard will be like EQ2 should have been. It has the same people that were behind EQ and other games, and from what I have read, it is almost like an updated version of EQ plus some elements of SWG, well planed in almost every way but graphics may leave some people uninterested.

But, that is just how it looks on paper. Since I am trying not to get into any game unless I know its worth my time, I will most likely be choosing between Vanguard and the WoW xpac. The main difference being that WoW appeals to the general public, and Vanguard aims a bit more for the hardcore (long term) gamer. I am not sure if either will be what I am looking for.

Until then, I will be playing dark messiah and Spore when it finally comes out. After that, no idea.
What is everyone elses plan? Just focus on WoW or mix it up?

I'll probably try out the Lord of the Rings MMO when it comes out, since it's a complete WoW ripoff.

1. Vangaurd is not ready to go live
2. ME MMo is like playing BG multiplayer style.

LoL, Vangaurd graphic engine is the sux, even high end computers have mega system lag as a result. also please please please keep in mind the people that were behind EQ are the fools who pushed out expansion after expansion without fixing bugs and glitches in the game that had been around for YEARS and those bugs are still NOT fixed.

I have a friend of a friend who's cousin's brother's nephew is playing the beta to LOTRO.... he (or she) says it's almost a wow clone at this point (except better graphics and no pvp (yet)...)

It's been awhile since I bothered to read anything about Vanguard, but if memory serves it's bringing back some of the things I absolutely hated about Everquest.

Racing to content stinks, although I understand how some people could like it as it adds a competitive edge to PvE. Personally I would rather know for a fact that a certain zone is available to raid, which is why I love instanced content.

One of my roommates plans on getting LoTR Online when it comes out (depending on ratings/etc) If it doesn't pan out very well he plans to get WoW. Either way it is win/win for me.

Ya, the graphics looked like a step or two backwards from what you can play now. But if it is the one downside to the game, and all else is fine, I wouldn't mind the sacrifice. I doubt thats the case though.

I read something in their forums, where people were complaining about traveling. While some of my hardcore friends like the reality of traveling, anyone that likes the convenience of WoW travel will be annoyed. Some companies realize that players want to spend time playing, not just walking around.

I remember hearing about the plan for the game a year or so ago. While I like the idea, I am not sure of how the product will be. It may be simular to WoW, but how much end game content and dungeons will there be?

I'm in the beta now, I don't see it as any more of a WoW clone than Wow is an EQ/FFXI/<insert any other MMO here> clone.

I mean obviously you kill stuff, you skill up, you have talents/skills but all games do.

*cough* Revealing that you're in the LOTRO beta in an online public forum is against the NDA..... heh, and with that said um, uh, my friend of a friend who's cousin's brother's nephew said that the LOTRO UI feels very much like WoW's, though they use different textures and what not. I won't go into detail beyond that though....

As far as I know neither of those two games have PvP..

That's a definete "hell no" in my book. Only game worth looking at is Warhammer and maybe Age of Conan next year. AOC has a very unique playstyle when it comes to combat although it looks to be alot like Shadowbane, hopefully not as buggy. Warhammer looks very promising though. If you read through how they do quests and things like that it's something different. The PvP and RvR should be pretty sweet as well.

You're right, it is... but how would you know that?

As far as I know, vanguard does. However, I don't think classes will be "balanced" so some classes will be abundant because they are just better for pvp.

they added PvP to Vanguard earlier in the month, they'll have PvP servers at launch too.

OP, you literally have gone through the exact order of games that i went thorugh, SWG>CoH>GW>WoW and if you liked the in-depth parts of SWG then you *should* love Vanguard, people are only talking bad about it because the devs are saying that it won't be as easy as WoW and most WoW players are used to easy games by now. But it's going to be a very good game and will take most the hard-core players away from WoW as well as others. I've been tracking it's development for 3 years now since it was just an idea in Brad McQuaid's (lead developer) head.

Right now the only upcoming MMO that I'm really interested in is The Chronicles of Spellborn. Too bad that the game has no hype, it looks cool and has some nice ideas in it.

If Vanguard has FFA PvP they need to put in recall. If nobody any idea what recall is it was a spell in UO that you casted to go to certain places by marking stones anywhere you wanted. I honestly thing newer MMO's need to put this in because it's a nice feature that gets rid of all the mind numbing travel. It's really the only way I can see FFA PvP working due to the fact you can actually escape if you wanted.

Gemstone III, Ultima online, Everquest and everquest II, Dark ages of camelot, Ascherons call one and two, SWG, and wow.

Same thing different game. It is the community that makes an online game fun. I hope that the next game is a tad bit harder.

The main MMO i'm interested in atm (as an aside to WoW mainly) is like that also, no hype and almost no one knows of it. Koas War Rise of the Fallen. It's being done by a totaly new studio, but so far what they have done looks promising. It is still quite some time until it is ready for release though. Their tech demo looks pretty nice, as does the concept stuff.

The difference is that TCOS has been in beta for a long time now and should be released in the first or second quarter of 2007. And though it's made by a relatively new team, its actually a pretty big budget title. The stuff that they're showing looks really polished as well.

The Chronicles of Spellborn

Anyways, that does look pretty nice, and it is nice it is in beta already and to be out soon. I think KWRotF is looking for a dec 08 or 07 (think 08) release, so not that far out either, they still have a lot of work to do though.

Exactly what my friend pointed out. WoW is easy to like, so you are stuck playing with... well you know. But a more challenging game will hopefully attract a higher caliber of people.

But, the game had better be fun, or it doesn't matter who you are playing with.

I am not sure if it is like it, but it reminds me of a game my friend played that revolved around the ancient egyption civilization. It was realistic, but also boring as hell, because most of the time you crafted and experimented to advance the civilization. i thought it was called "face of man" but i have no idea.

TCOS looks pretty cool.

IIRC, the skill based system looks innovative. What it is: you have a certain number of action bars, with skills that you can set up on them. When you use one skill, the action bar rotates to the next bar, where you may have another set of skills (or some same ones). The bar rotation acts like a global cooldown and it allows you to set up your skills like you would a deck of cards. It could make for some interesting game play and strategy. The graphics definitely look hot.

My husband and I can't wait for Vanguard to come out! If it is what we hope it will be, our WoW accounts will hardly be utilized if we don't cancel altogether. We have both played SWG, EQ, and EQ2. I would rather dive head first into a wood chipper than go back to those games because sony sucks so bad. Their customer service is hellish at best and they change the game everytime you turn around.
Frankly I am beginning to wonder if blizzard is taking lessons from them. In my opinion, the game was fine just the way it was before this stupid new patch. Now we have lag issues in the battle grounds if you are alliance. I am not convinced the horde are getting these same issues. Sometimes, when I have been in the WSG battle grounds both my husband and I get booted off the server (not at the same time) just as we were about to grab a flag. This smells of horde hacking to me! Blizzard will do nothing about these issues. The way the game was before didn't give the horde that much of an incentive to cheat, but this new honor system has everything all jacked up.
If you have a decent computer, want a challenge and need a break from all of the tards and stupid little kids on WoW, you may really like Vanguard. We have a friend that is in its beta as we speak and she loves it!
As for the graphics..... you guys gotta be kidding!!! The graphics in VG are awesome!
