Returning player looking for a solid realm transferFollow

#1 May 05 2014 at 2:32 PM Rating: Decent
As the subject says, I am returning after an approximately 4 year break. I have a level 80 dwarf priest and I want to transfer from my old realm, because all of my friends are gone. I'm currently on Eonar.

I am looking for a realm that has active raiding/PvE, has a balance of horde:alliance relatively close to 1:1, and has some decent PvP. In looking around on the internet, I've seen some strong recommendations for Korgath, Emerald Dream and Korgath. Can anyone second those?

I would love to hear why you think the realm you're on is good. I would love to find a strong guild community again, like I had when I left years ago.

Thanks.

Do you play on US or EU servers? If EU, which language?

I'd suggest starting an alt before you transfer. A lot has changed in 4 years and with a new expansion slowly edging up a lot more will change. Realms are getting linked in various ways and that trend is supposed to continue. So, try things out, get your feet wet, see who you meet.

Speaking of coming back, there are lot's of new catch up mechanisms. One of the big ones is that a pre-order for the new expansion will give you the chance to boost one character to 90 (current level cap). The trick is that if you level the character to 60+ before using the boost, you will also have your professions leveled all the way up.

A side issue, related to professions, is that they are getting major changes in the new expansion. Some things are going away, professions in general may become more accessible though a new feature called garrisons. You may want to read up on some things to make your return go a bit smoother and to help you prepare for the new changes. Just, take some of the flaming and vitriol in various discussions with a grain of salt. People are bored and tense.

Thanks Rhodekylle, it is so nice to get a thoughtful and reasonable response! It seems like only the most negative people post on some forums. I have been playing on my level 80 a bit in Mount Hyjal, and you are right a lot of things have changed. Talents are very weird. On the one hand it is nice that a lot of the talent based spells are available to all, on the other hand it seems that the new talent system reduces variety and customization. Maybe that is just an incorrect perception.

My old realm Eonar, is actually doing pretty well. It seems like the low level areas are somewhat quiet, but the higher level areas and the cities are still very active. I am yet to see how PvP is doing. So with the new expansion, are you saying that I could essentially take a level 1 character and have it boosted to 90? Obviously there is the advantage of having a 60+ character's professions boosted as well.

I will definitely get the hang of things first, and get my priest to level 90 before I switch realms. Still, it would be nice to hear about some active alliance PvE realms with good PvP.

Thanks

Ah, I see! It looks like "posting from" went away and I hadn't noticed. The good news is that although I'm Horde, I have characters on Emerald Dream. The bad news is that it is a server on the Chinese server groups.

I can't comment firsthand on PVP for NA/EU servers, but if you're looking for world PVP that is said to be a mess. That's one of the things Blizz is going to be working on for next expansion. Aside from world PVP, I gather most of the other stuff has been cross linked to balance the factions some. I'll leave it for someone else to comment on how that's working out, I'm just not a PVP fan.

Yep! It is intended as a catch up mechanism for returning players, so that you're ready to launch into the next expansion with the rest of the pack. From there, you go to the next catch up phase, the last zone added in this expansion (Timeless Isle) gives you the chance to collect gear that will be much better than a fresh level 90 and it gets you ready to start doing basic raiding. The LFR raids are fairly forgiving in terms of the way the bosses behave, but they'll at least let you see how things look and get that part of the expansion's story. They'll also give you a shot at upgrading your weapon so that you don't hit quite so much like you're using a wet noodle.

There is some truth to that in a broad sense. The old talent trees had lots of choices, but there wasn't much actual choice if you were expected to optimize your build. For optimization, sites like EJ had everything min/maxed and if you didn't follow that pattern you were Moon Moon. Talents are still min/maxed, but they are more flexible and that can come down to switching things up for different bosses.

If you want to check realm population statistics, here's a nifty little site: http://wow.realmpop.com/us.html

Apparently, Garrosh (US) has a 1:1 ratio down to third decimal.

Yeah, I know about realmpop. I was really looking for a first-hand recommendation of someone who plays on a server that is very lively and active.
