Last weekend I switched our guild from Ventrillo to a Mumble server I've had up and running for a while.

People seem happy with it. Some things I've noticed are:
  • Lower Latency for when you are yelling "Push the Button".
  • All volumes are equalized. No setting individual volumes up or down.
  • OMG, A free, working IPhone and IPAD app in Apple's App Store. We use PTT and there is a big icon on screen to key the mic.

I didn't want to hurt the guildie's feelings who was letting us use his Vent server, but I'm glad I made the switch.

Cool! I like vent so far, but I have serious issues with the way my Bluetooth headset interfaces with it. So... I may have to try Mumble out.

Edit: Yeah... I can't spell

Before my guild put its raiding on hiatus, they had switched to Mumble. I didn't think the sound quality was as good and the set up wasn't very intuitive like it is for Vent. I had to have help from some guildies to actually get it to work for me, unlike Vent which was pretty simple. I also needed them to walk me through to get 'push to talk' to work on it. Once we got through those hurdles though, it was okay for raiding. I do miss the ability to adjust the volume of individual people though because it's nice to be able to turn down people who have extra annoying voices even though their actual volume isn't that high. >.>

I don't know that it supports bluetooth on the phone app. I may have to try that.

I often write setup instructions with screenprints at work, so I authored a couple for normal and ios setup, for our guild to use. I like people to be able to walk through a setup procedure complete with instructions and pictures. I use Evernote on my pc personally. It allows me to copy a web url easily for a document. Then I just made a tiny url for it that I can give my guildies.

That would have helped me a lot back when they were trying to talk me though it DURING a raid. >.<

We tested this out awhile ago because our Vent server has a nasty habit of going down right in the middle of raid. I have damage in my one ear from an industrial fire alarm (and my own stupidity) and after about an hour of chatting with a guildmate on Mumble, my ear was ringing so bad I had to go to sleep. I have no idea what would have caused it because I didn't notice any difference in sound quality and was wearing the same headset I always use. They decided not to switch to Mumble, but we still have a crappy Vent server, so I hope they fix that soon.

Been using Mumble for about a year or so.

The only complaint we've had is pugs failing to the "mumble boss" when they are trying to set it up for the first time.

Otherwise, it's been great.

Yeah, I tried to get my son to use it for he and his SWTOR buddies, since I had it. They were all like "We already have Skype. We don't wanna use it.".

I said "what ever".

Mumble is awesome. Quality is good, hosting is dirt-cheap, and it works equally well for both Apple and Windows systems (which is rather important for my guild with almost a 50/50 ratio). Only thing that bothers me a bit is that the 64 bit WoW client broke the wonderful overlay feature.

Not looking back at all to all the previous attempts with Teamspeak and Ventrilo.

My guild switched to Mumble a while ago, it's ok. The sound quality is better, but I miss being able to individually adjust volumes. There's one person in the raid who I have trouble hearing most of the time, if I turn my volume up everyone else will be too noisy, would be so much easier if I could just boost his volume separately.

We have quite regular problems with people being unable to connect (something to do with a certificate that they need to download a fix for, hasn't happened to me yet) and needing to rerun the audio wizard before they can hear anything. I've also found that I have to plug my headphones in before loading up Mumble or it doesn't work, something I don't think I had to do with Vent/Teamspeak.

So for me I find it functional, but not as amazing as some people find it.

There are 2 issues with certificates. One happened almost 2 months ago, when due to an expired certificate the client refused to connect to the server. I actually see that as a feature rather than a bug, especially since a patch (and all new client with patch included) was available just hours after the problem occured. The power of Open Source, with lots of programmers being involved around the globe and thus no timezone restraints.

The other is (re)installing the client without importing your personal certificate. Might seem inconvenient at first, but a really a small price for proper authentication and encryption.
