Players across Azeroth have recently embraced a new, very personal achievement: leveling a character "Iron Man" style. What started out as only a small movement, this bare bones, no-frills style of play has now transformed into a community-wide call-to-arms known as the Iron Man WoW Challenge, inviting World of Warcraft enthusiasts to see how close they can get to level cap with only the barest of necessities.

The goal of the Iron Man WoW challenge is simple: reach level 85. The catch, however, is that you must accomplish this task without the assistance of talents, class specialization, stat-improved gear, professions, buffs, item enhancements, or other players. And if you die? Well, then it’s back to square one.

Here are some of the latest rules:

THE BIG ONE: If you die, EVER, that character is removed from the challenge. [...]

It actually is something that started among the players and caught on enough that Blizz gave it a nod.

I never was for those "no materia/equipment/one hand tied behind your back" challanges, so I'll skip this one as well. But at least it WOULD make the leveling more challenging... a bit.

Makes me wonder how far people get.

I'm recalling the 'leveling naked' guy having to throw on rings and stuff after a while to keep things moving?

He was a warrior, though. A mage could do it easily, but it'd take ages.

Ditto that...as well as frustrating.

Interestingly, I was going about my WoW day about a month ago and encountered a player who asked if I knew a "Champion." (I'm on a rp server, but had no idea what she meant.) She finally clued me in that she was looking for a level 85 player because she had a "dilemma" and asked if she could show me what it was. Ok. So we go to that quest where you have to get a key from a den of sleeping worgs. I recalled that quest very well and said, "Oh, here's how I finally got the key: I got as close as I could to it before the worgs attacked and I died and by repeating this a couple times, finally was close enough that I could grab the key before dying again." She then responded that <name of character> couldn't die because she played "hard core." I was as clueless to what she meant as I was about who a Champion was.

We began chatting and she explained what "hard core" playing was. She asked if she could add me to her friends list and thus began daily communication from her to let me know her character's new name (the same name but with a symbol of some type over one of the letters) since she last died. She seemed to get to about 35 max before dying. One time she was really upset because she died during a LFR group and "it was the healer's fault she died." I think that time she decided that death was invalid due to the circumstances and she just wouldn't do anymore LFR's.

Recently I've noticed she's mid-50's level, so not sure if she's still playing hard core/iron man. If one reeeeaaaaaaaaallly likes a challenge...that would do it. Not for me; one of my major strategies is chain-dying until I reach a given objective. Smiley: lol

I agree.

Rawr, you don't have to worry about getting killed by Deathwing anymore. He's now stuck inside DS, but you can get the achievement from dying to him on the last raid boss in there.

I don't get what using no equipment or skill has to do with state-of-the-art futurist super armor. Seems pretty contradictory.

An "Iron Man" challenge is a challenge in which you attempt some quest or journey with as little supplies and aid as possible, to see just how far you can go. An "Iron Man" challenge isn't necessarily meant to be completed, but more of "go as far as you can before you lose/get killed/quit".

So basically, wearing no armor, or talents is severely gimping yourself, and using no food, potions or bandages is stripping yourself of supplies.

It is meant to be a gruelling and difficult task, and the main purpose of the whole thing is to see how far you can go without getting killed.

I did a rogue (long time ago) with only daggers to level 60, it was very challenging and I died a lot. I won't do it again for sure, no glory at all and the feeling of "what the heck did I do that for" was overwhelming.

Makes me kind of wonder how far I could go in Skyrim using no armor and only my fists.

I will not be trying that.

Hmmmm.

Instead of no armor and only fists, maybe nothing beyond Hide and Iron Weapons and the very first heal spell?

At least make it *realistic*.

Well, the first bear I see outside the tutorial cave is going to have its way with me either way, so I figured might as well go the full hardcore.

Bears tend to do that with or without an Ironman challenge unless you tone the challenge level of the game down, to be honest.

One of the few things I *didn't* like about Skyrim is they have you fighting things you have no hope of killing right near the beginning of the main quest... I mean, come on, Ice Trolls at <Lv5 with Iron/Steel equipment? Yeeeaaaah Riiiiiight.

And what do you have to do, to be able to use your signature abilities? Yup, do those first few main quests.

You could use the pacifist route level to 85 by picking flowers and mining.

While some of the Iron Man challenge (as described) is intriguing, I just have never been into the whole idea of "you die and have to start over". Sure, I played games ages ago where that was the only option and it was frustrating to put a lot of time in and then have it just erased in a clumsy moment. I'm not even one who dies often while leveling so it's not a matter of me not being careful enough, I just don't really like the idea of abandoning a character that I have put time into.

The gear restriction would be annoying to me as well. If I made up a challenge it would be more along the lines of only using quest reward gear (no AH or vendor) and no help from my other characters. I suppose I could go without professions, especially if I couldn't use the AH or buy things from vendors.

I could do this challenge and probably would if I didn't have so many other things that I'm already working on in game.

My current 'project' wasn't even meant as a challenge really. I just really like questing and thought it would be fun to use the option to turn off experience to level a character through all of the zones (level 10+) while doing the quests at a relatively appropriate level. I don't really have any 'rules' for him though and I generally keep him as nicely geared as I can (I don't own experience boosting heirlooms). One of the fun side effects of leveling slowly this way with lots of questing is that I have been gaining a lot of rep with the other Horde factions and am exalted with three and revered with the others already and I only hit level 40 last night.

Gather around children, and listen close, for I have a tale to tell.

Back in the early days of this internet phenomenon, you know, before graphics, I used to play a MUD. Now this particular game had one character class choice that let you be more powerful than the other classes, but the catch was you only had one life. It was quite entertaining, and a very different approach to the usual methods at that time.

Now get off my lawn!
