Is there any way to take a 'snapshot' and save your current look in case you pick up better gear bu want to keep the look. My gear now is strictly mismatched blue pickup gear, but the overall look is killer - for me anyway. Black leather, blue-black scale mail and dark crimson inserts - with a purple skull and bones guild tabard, I'm a little bit afraid of my own toon.

Yeah no real way to 'save' a set that I'm aware of. I just set aside a bag in my bank to hold the set, pull out the pieces I need as I replace stuff, and do my best not to accidentally sell anything I shouldn't.

Cumbersome system is cumbersome.

One thing that might work is if you actually equipped the pieces you have mogged, and saved it as a gear set. That's the only thing I can think of.
