So the other day I'm over at my cousin to pick up my kids, and he's playing WoW on his laptop. At least it looked like Wow at first glance, just with some custom UI I thought.
Then as I look closer, no that's not a warcraft 'toon. He was playing Rift it turns out, and while I have never played any other mmo's, I was kind of shocked at the blatant plagiarism, at least of the UI layout.

Rift borrowed from WoW and WoW borrowed from EQ.

No reason to invent something new when you've got something that already works.

HOW DARE RIFT PLAGIARIZE THE IDEA OF ELVES AND DWARVES FROM WARCRAFT?!

Have you ever played any other MMO? Almost all of the decent ones have near identical UI's. The only differences really are where to put the character and target frames and the minimap. That's about it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Is it? What if someone's trying to get under your skin with an insulting caricature of your voice? That's imitation of a sort, but it certainly isn't flattering.

There's a reason I went and grabbed all those addons. Fugly interface is fugly. Smiley: wink

But yeah, other MMOs that feel too much like WoW don't work for me either.

Well even Star Wars has a similar UI. The main difference is that the chat box is up in the left hand corner, and the player and target frames (and companion frames, and the minimap are at the bottom. Oh, and the buff and debuff icons are on top of the frames instead of having their own bars at the top. They still have a talent tree, with three different possible choices.

But the game is still very different from WoW, and not just because it's sci-fi. If you can count it as pure sci-fi, I don't really. One thing I've always loved about Star Wars is how they blend sci-fi and fantasy together. That's enough to keep me interested.

I think about five of my posts are actually related to a game, and four of them were to create a sticky for FFXI. Which is ridonculously out of date now. And I'm pretty sure I say five as a means to round up.

One does not need to play a game to spam their way to 30k posts. Smiley: wink2

Rift's UI is pretty customizable. Maybe he made it look as much like WoW as possible. And gave his elf black hair in the closest to WoW style possible. And used dyes and the wardrobe mechanic to give his cleric something as robey looking as he could. All in an attempt to recreate his belf priest almost exactly. What? No. I'm not saying I would do that. Of course not.
