How to Upgrade From Trial VersionFollow

I just purchased the upgrade online for my trial version of WoW. I am now looking at a box with a drop-down menu that asks what I want to install and my choices are: World of Warcraft; The Burning Crusade; or Wrath of the Lich King. I Googled for the info and found a forum where the answers conflicted a bit, but seemed to say that I don't need to download anything else - buy upgrading it just unlocks the other content. Another post seemed to say to dl Wrath of the Lich King, and another said that many people unwittingly begin new accounts by dling again.

Sooooooo...do I need to dl anything and, if not, will I have all three of the choices I was given?

Thanks so much! I just don't want to do anything to accidentally not have access to the toons I've already begun.

Just run WoW and login to your account, the patcher should do the rest.

Ok, did that....patcher ran, but character login screen still has the "Upgrade to WotLK" on it. Also, I entered an instance and received a quest that requires me to enter the keep, but there is a grate beyond the quest giver and I have clicked on the grate/gate and it doesn't open although my quest mob appears to be beyond it, so wondering if I should select to install WotLK from the install icon on my desktop.

If you bought the game up to the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, just run the WotLK installer and it'll install all the necessary files. It might have to download them first, though, which could take a while.

It's Blizzard's way of making it easier for you to upgrade your account from the Basic game (Classic + TBC) to the WotLK expansion. Can you still play without clicking the "upgrade" button? If so, you can ignore it for now.

Thank you all for responding and helping. I would have most likely been ok just logging into game and playing as usual but I didn't understand the process at the time and couldn't understand why I was still in the trial after purchasing the game. On my account-transaction page it showed my status as "queing" so I now know that my trial would have become the subscribed game if I had waited a bit.

But of course I didn't do that. Smiley: lol To purchase the game I clicked the Upgrade button from the log in screen which only presented one choice - a set called Battle Chest that is the original game plus the Burning Crusade expansion. Since "Cataclysm" was on my trial sign in, and again, not being familiar with Blizzard games, I thought the purchase would be the game plus all expansions a la EQ. Thus my confusion began.

I won't go through the long version, but, due to my own impatience, I ended up having to uninstall/scan/defrag/reinstall the game. At least I'm in the process of reinstalling...lol. Now I know that purchasing from the trial does not include Cataclysm (nor Wrath of the Lich King for that matter), and I read a post on the WoW forums that explained what each expansion contained. I am really happy to hear that I have the same world as everyone else, just not access to higher levels, etc. until further purchase of expansions.

Now my account page shows my status as active and I peeked into the game for a few while it's still installing and do see a difference from the trial so all is good and really looking forward to playing.

Thank you again!

I really love how the game now installs itself while you play. After installing the core things, you can log in and play while it finishes downloading and installing all the "fluff" and stuff you probably won't see for the first couple of hours anyway.

Means you don't have to wait for the full ~20GB download before getting that fix. Smiley: grin
