Where is WoW going?Follow

Would like to start a thread and get people's perspective on where they think WoW is going? Been hearing too much negative chatter. Are we at the beginning or end of fine gaming history?

Now this is not suspicious at all.

Although I'm highly curious by nature I somehow do not feel the need to click this link at all.

#6REDACTED, Posted: Dec 11 2011 at 6:53 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Hey guys, no need to be suspicious, I actually would like to debate the current buzz I keep hearing on the future of WoW - so if you have comments or ideas, let's hear them. Thank you.

#9REDACTED, Posted: Dec 11 2011 at 9:05 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Does anyone see any competitive disadvantages with the game? Last night's preview of diablo was amazing!

I'll believe it's possible to make a "wow-killer" when one of them manages to kill it. The game is heavily entrenched and the developers are willing to change things as they feel is necessary to improve. WoW will be competitive until they either purposefully kill it themselves of some other game manages the same paradigm shift that WoW originally had with EQ-style "long grind small reward" MMOs.

Also, "Are we at the beginning or the end of fine gaming history?" Really? We're in the middle. There were good games before WoW and will be good games after WoW, and it is horribly self-centered to believe otherwise.

I very much agree with this view.

I would add the proviso that WoW has to some extent changed the playing field. I cannot see a return to the "slow grind" of EQ and the eastern MMOs. Although even EQ has speeded up the grind a lot nowadays.

Some recent attempts to topple WoW have gone too far the other way. I maxed out in Rift almost without playing and found the lack of depth rather quickly. So there is a real danger in taking it too fast and a definite distaste - apart from the die-hards - from going back to the grind. A lot of the problem WoW has is because the players can consume content far, far faster than they can create it. I am sure that there will be players at level 90 within 24 hours of MoP going live. Then they will start on the "I'm bored, gimme content" whine all over again.

Really we are playing the Audrey II of MMOs and there is no end until the entire world is consumed.

I'm not going to lie... I feel like this is some sort of research study (without the surveys)...

That being said, I highly doubt 11+ million people will just all of a sudden drop the game. As mentioned above, I don't think WoW is near the end at all.

I predict subscription stagnation and gradual decline over the next 10-15 years accompanied by occasional spikes and drop-offs in membership.

There will also be conflict in the middle east.

Ah you mean Badlands/Loch Modan. Yeah I can see that coming too. Lot of minerals in that corner of the world.

Wonder if we get to drive the bulldozers?

Yeah I don't think WoW is near the end at all either. It's probably reached its peak, but it's going to take a long *** time, or a lot of ***** ups on Blizz's part to lose even half of their current subscribers, let alone most of them.

I know I've said this before, but I think TOR is going to make a decent sized dent in WoW's subscription base. Maybe a million or two. Not immediately of course, but in the next six months or so probably. They already have nearly a million people who have pre-ordered, and I know from my own server there's a significant amount of people who are, at the very least, trying TOR out.

Agreed.

TOR does look very interesting. I have loved many of the Bioware games.. going back to the old school D&D ones. The were designed to be single player with little in the way of replay value. My concern with TOR is once the storylines are exahusted... what's next? Wow is end-game centric, TOR seeams all about the journey. I will probably sub for the six months and see how it goes from there. Meanwhile my daughter will be trashing all my WoW characters...

With the way the planets are laid out in TOR, combined with the fact you have to play through the EXACT same class quests twice if you want to take both advanced classes (Consular Sage/Shadow, for example), the replay value will be hurting. There is never a choice of this zone or that zone to level in, and from what I've seen you're required to go through all your class quests if you want to get all your companions, so that rules out leveling through flashpoints or PvP.

I like TOR, I'll probably even play it for a few months. Whether or not I keep playing depends on how they manage the game and handle replay and end-game content.

I think there will still be some replay value, considering the different choices you make in quests can have an impact on how the story plays out.

As far as end game content goes, we'll see. As much as I enjoy raiding, I don't know how much longer I will STAY interested. I'm definitely curious to see what they do with it though.
