For the free trial you don't need to buy anything. Just download it from the website. You only need to buy the game if you want to continue playing past the trial period.

If you do play to play long term, here's what you need to know:

Codes can't be reused. You'll need to buy them new.

Expansions don't work on their own. You need the core game and any previous expansions first.

There are currently three pieces to this game.
1 - The core game. This is the base game and the Burning Crusade expansion.
2 - The 'Wrath of the Lich King' expansion.
3 - The 'Cataclysm' expansion.

You technically don't need the last two right away but you will if you really want to play long term or if you want to play the Death Knight class or the Goblin or Worgen races.

You should check out this thread. Some of the recent holiday specials might help you.

The only thing that IS a full-game in that you get game time for the first month on purchase is the original World of Warcraft that you level from 1-60 in. Burning crusade = expansion that you can't play without the first (they MAY be packaged now as I don't see mention of it in Rhode's sales link, Lich King = expansion, also can't play without first having the original (opens up 70-80 content and a new class), and Cataclysm = expansion, also no playing without having the basic game (opens up 80-85 content, 2 new races)..

Check out the sales you can get "everything" required for I think they said $50 which is cheaper than any of the expansions are selling for locally.

WoW with burning crusade $5 - comes with 1 month gameplay
Wrath of the Lich King $10
Cataclysm $20

Total $35

I would by all three now while they are on sale and only activate the codes as you need them. Then if you don't enjoy the game you will only be out $5 and you can sell the codes for the others once the holiday sale ends.

Also the expansions require all the previous expnasions. If you wan't to play cataclysm you have to purchase all 4.

This might seem obvious to people who play WoW but some games are not like this and you can get away with just the original and the newest expansion.

I would avoid guides. The game flows very well from zone to zone and professions are not so bloody opaque that you need a strategy guide to figure it out.

Yes there are technically 3 current expansions. The first one, Burning Crusade, has been combined with the orgional game so you just have to buy the original game now. Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion and you will need to buy it to keep leveling, same goes for Cataclysm. Mists of Pandera won't come out until next year sometime (my guess is 3rd quarter next year) so you have plenty of time to pew-pew your way up to max level with several characters if you so choose.

Follow Rhodekylle's link and you can get it all for $35 which is a very nice deal considering you normally would have to pay closer to $100 to get everything.

You should generally avoid print guides for on-line games. WoW, for example, gets 3+ major content patches per expansion, and those won't be in a print guide. Also, there are fairly frequent updates and hot-fixes that could make half the information in a print guide completely worthless. Your best resource are forum communities like this one, where we can at least point you to where you can find the answer, if we don't know the answer already.

Yup yup.

Especially with as many changes as there were right after the launch of the last expansion, a lot of information that was a month or two old was out of date. Things have settled down more recently though, but they're always making small tweaks to the game.

The World of Warcraft website has pretty decent introductions to most of the basics. What does a Mage do? What's Inscription? What the story behind these furry dog things? Stuff like that. Moving on from there, wowhead.com has a nice database if you have time to check it out.

We're always happy to answer questions too of course. Smiley: grin
