I have been thinking a bit about endgame content. Heroics are hard. Raiding is hard. You need to put in a lot of time to prepare for this content. It is some what like having a second job. Now... it is not nearly as demanding as a second job, but still it is work. Why do people do it?

I think that folks do it for many reasons. I can only speak for myself. Initially I strayed away from endgame because I had such a bad experience with the endgame content in my previous MMORPG(FFXI). Then I joined a guild that was very interested in helping others achieve item level as well as having fun.

Having Fun? It is exactly what you might think. We laugh hysterically when we wipe. We tease each other mercilessly about silly things. So why do I want to increase my item level? Well I want to play more with these folks. Also I want to help other folks in my guild out.

New content is also another driver for me. I want to experience the game.

I feel like folks that are not in a guild that let's them have as much fun as mine are missing out.

What makes the endgame fun for you?

I like raiding with my guild cause some times it can be flat out funny. I remeber our hunter was excited that he didn't have to use arrows anymore and were doing attempts on nef and as we all jump down our hunter says in vent opps bow broke... i don't know what we thought was so funny but we had to wipe it and gather ourselves because there was non-stop laughter for about 10 mins.

Also my guild if not for RL getting in way we would probley be one of the top guilds on our server raiding wise but we usally only raid once a week on wedsday for 3 hours but honestly this newest raid was so damn easy we went 7/8 and 1 shot the first 5 bosses.

Nowadays it's mostly about putting the character to the test. I spent 85 levels learning rotations, CDs, grinding away at countless mobs, raising professions, etc. It's time to throw on some blues and try my luck in a battleground or two. It's the culmination of 3 months or so of work, and I'm eager to see the results. Smiley: smile

It has a lot in common with sports.

Some people like to do something fun with ten or so friends for a few hours, then have beers afterward. Some people like to do the roadwork, buy branded "go-faster" gear, then challenge themselves against other people - directly or against their times/distances/etc. Some people just like to win, and that's something else that's out there that can be beaten. Some people want to be seen by others as a winner, and have a piece of their ego staked on it.

There are plenty more. For every motivation that drives someone somewhere to play softball, the same thing has someone in Dragon Soul right now.

The grind that is endgame isn't fun.
It's the doing with friends and guildies that make it so. If I weren't playing with my brother and the assorted goofballs in our guild, I don't think I'd have come back.

Edit: 750 posts since 2/5/04...I am so slooww...

Quoted for truth.

Sure, downing bosses is fun. But the reason I log in for the raid every week, even if we're just slamming our face against some hardmode boss for six hours this week, is because of the people I raid with. They're hilarious, and fun to hang out with.
