OK, so now that I've reached level 80 I want to play in the grownup dungeons, specifically lich king heroics and cataclysm. The AI won't let me 'cuz my gear's too low (it want 180 for LKH, I'm at 176. I'm obviously not going to bridge the gap by questing.
'
So now what - just keep running the biggest dungeons it will allow and hope I get lucky on the equipment drops?

Sure you will. Quest for 15 minutes in Mount Hyjal. You'll bridge the HELL out of that gap.

Skip WotLK heroics, unless you're really interested in a specific drop for Transmog. At best, the ICC heroics drop 232 gear, while quest rewards in Mt Hyjal or Vashj'ir start at iLevel 272. There's also the option of looking for level 78-80 cata greens on the AH.

thanks

Time to move on, then. At this point, even though they're supposedly L80 quests, all I'm really getting are disenchanting practice gear, well below what I already have.

One thing to note re: ilvl. If you're using heirlooms, they don't count towards your ilvl (or have an ilvl of 1 or something like that). If you keep a piece of current gear for that slot in your bags, your ilvl will increase substantially.

Doing a couple of quests in Mount Hyjal and Vashj'ir will bring your ilvl up fast. The quest rewards there are in the 272-289 range, which is equivalent to Northrend heroic raid gear.
