So I know you all hate research stuff, so this is not that... I would simply like some feedback as to your thoughts.
Do you all think that your personality dictates the type of role you play?
I ask being an INTJ and having two toons that are tanks. This being said my personality type is one in which I'm glad being in the background until leadership proves they are not worth the leader title then I jump in.
Case in point, I love playing my rogue (dps) but when we do guild events and such I always have a tank or healer ready to jump in and "lead" when necessary. Now this is not to say that dps doesn't lead, so please do not take it as such, just usually dps kind of coasts (or at least I do when I dps).
Now I think this is coming up because, while I enjoy the game, I have yet to decide which toon I want to make my 'main.' I figure this choice will impact gearing and playing time so I want to make a wise decision. But yeah...
So tl;dr... Do you think personality dictates class and role choice?

It is also a matter of why you play. This may obscure your "personality type" (go-go pigeon holes).
For example I mostly play for relaxation and to have something I can enjoy doing. I run a business so I am not short of stress and decisions during the day. I don't want them all over again when I'm in WoW.
I have all classes but I am not fond of leadership or critical roles such as tank/healer. Or rather I used to really enjoy them when in guild groups but I have no wish to endure the scorn of anonymous brats online (wonder why I post here then?
).
However I still enjoy soloing those classes.
Role choice as in leader/follower is almost certainly a matter of personality but not really role as in tank/healer/dps since any of them could be leading the group. However tanks tend to be assertive and often assume control by virtue of controlling the pace (assuming there are no idiots present). Sometimes you get a power struggle between tank and healer since both view themselves as essential.
I suppose that is another role-personality congruence, dps tend not to be prima-donnas

I don't think the type of class you prefer relates your type of personality, but your role within the community most certainly does.

My druid was my helpful side. Healer, guild leader, off-spec tank, loved it when I could pull a group through a situation they were used to wiping in. The freedom of movement and versatility of the class fit well with me.
My warlock was my playful, dark disruptive side. I positively enjoyed PvPing, the CC was amazing and being able to overwhelm in a skirmish without damaging anyone was enjoyable as heck.
My Warrior is the disciplined one. Making the money at the AH, and keeping a clear head while being pounded on by countless mobs in the field.

As attractive as MBTI may seem, there are questions about how useful it really is. Your personality has a possible correspondence to role preferences, but that is in turn probably influenced by your perception of the role and its demands.
I'm an INTP according to the online test I found, which makes me an architect and means I should enjoy the theory-crafting side of WoW, which I do.
I don't really know which role that would make me enjoy in WoW, but my favorite DPS class is rogue which seems to have the most complicatd rotation and DPS mechanics.

I'm an extrovert. My last character was a hunter with a menagerie of pets. So ... I guess there's some correlation.

Rhode, I completely agree. The posting of the INTJ bit was just a reference point. It is not that the personality completely determines everything about a person, but I was just wondering how personality of people, in general, affected their role choice.

I'm an ENFP last time I checked. I prefer spellcasters above all else, and I find DPSing way more enjoyable than healing. Healing just stresses me out too much.

I hear this viewpoint a lot. I feel completely differently.
I find healing the laid-back relaxing mode of play. I don't have to know where I'm going, how the fights work, or really even what dungeon I'm in. I just follow people around watching my raidframes. There are no numbers or charts to worry about.
For me, DPS is massive competition, full-time, high-alert. Squeeze every last point in, head on a swivel, get the jump on every pull, hit every priority/rotation with absolute precision or all is wasted. There's a chart sitting there staring at me and being one of 5 bazillion other DPSers my only value is if those numbers are amazing. I enjoy doing DPS but this expansion (and my growing stable of characters) has found me time-pressed and impatient so I rarely fill this role anymore because by the time I get into a queue and hope the group doesn't collapse I could have already finished one by tanking it myself or cruise-healing.
I can understand that, and I've heard it before. One of my raid leaders had a mage as her main during Wrath, but now tanks instead because she doesn't like the competitiveness of being a DPS. Personally I love good natured competition. I just don't like the stress of knowing that if I **** up, it could lead to a wipe. Sure, there's times I have that responsibility as a DPS (like when I detonate traps during Rag) but they're usually only for specific phases during specific fights.
I believe I was found to be an ISTJ procrastinator, but I play all classes and since I'm a solo player then the role is moot, since I lead / support no one but myself.
I tend to lead towards "jack of all trades" classes. I love being able to fill any role.
Even more I love proving to people that I can fill a role that devs did a bad job designing the class to do. (ie: tanking on my pally pre wolk, tanking/dpsing on my rdm in ffxi)

There is also a stereotype - no idea whether it is borne out in fact - that people tend to opposites. For example that people who are disempowered in RL can be dominant and aggressive online because of the anonymity. The popular series The Guild played heavily on the disparity between the real life persona and the in game one.
Undoubtedly one of the reasons people play is that the game is an environment with fixed and relatively simple parameters - unlike RL. In a world where many of us are at the mercy of forces outside our control the game gives us an environment where we can maintain the illusion of control. Something can be achieved by our own efforts relatively easily.

@Mazra - They are personality types. I hate to post links but you can google INTJ or ENFP and it will tell you about it. Also there is a website (www.humanmetrics.com [I am sure there are others, so please google it or something else if you feel it necessary, this is just the one I've used]) which has you answers yes/no questions and tells you at the end what you are. It is simply a way to get a baseline about your personality. To me, it is always interesting to read it and see what I am "supposed" to be and do. Sometimes it is spot on, other times not so much.
As Rhode and I discussed earlier, it is not a end all be all, but it is interesting to note.
@Cobra101 - I wonder if it can be boiled down so easily. We play to have 'control' in our otherwise chaotic lives? While I do believe this is a stereotype it is one that seems unfounded. As we've heard from many folks, they just like to play. Whenever someone is leaving the game (they always come back) but we also tell them to do what they want. It seems to me that if we needed that much control we would never leave... although I guess we never do; so maybe it is a correct stereotype. =)

@Mazra - I apologize if I did not answer your question... I can tell you that specifically an INTJ means that my dominant traits are: Introversion, iNtuition, Thinking, and Judging. As for the others, I do not know offhand and am too lazy to look it up at the moment. But I can tell you that the E = Exotroverted, and the F = Feeling. But the others... yeah again too lazy. =)

I used to use the Belbin test which I think is a forerunner of this one.
It has to be pointed out that any test that asks you questions to determine your personality needs serious qualification.
Firstly they are essentially self assessments. They may identify what you believe you are but that doesn't necessarily mean that is what you actually are or what other people think you are.
Secondly unless held to a strict timing there is a tendency for people to either over-think or connive at their answers. In other words answering in a way that they feel shows the character they would like to project. A lot of the cleverness of the tests is trying to weed out this sort of thing but smart people are smart.

The main issues I have with the Meyers-Briggs test, is that there is no middle ground. They pigeon hole you into one of two answers for every question. What if I don't feel strongly one way or the other? I still have to pick one. That not only affects the accuracy of the test, it's extremely annoying.
