My advice to people leveling up with friends, or just people leveling in general, is to not skip content. Don't rush because you see light at the end of the tunnel. Take your time, explore the world, experience the game's content at all levels.
Rushing through will get you to 85 faster, but it won't be as much fun.
I agree here. When I came back to WoW after a long absence, I was happy to find that they've revamped many of the old quests and created new ones, especially the low level ones, so you may not have as much of the "ho-hum, did this quest 300 times before." The Redridge questline is especially fun, btw.
They've also made solo questing almost painfully easy. Unless your goal is end-game play, I'd recommend taking it slow and enjoying the scenery - especially with a first-time player.
While Recruit-A-Friend may be nifty for those who want to focus on end game, it will probably be too swift for the go-slow approach that I and Mazra suggest. If you do all the quests, many will be grey, and thus so easy they won't provide a decent challenge.
Going slow also allows a new player to get a feel for each ability as they come along. Some of the spells/abilities and mechanics need practice, which you won't get if you rush. For instance, as a rogue, just learning to maneuver your character to within pocket-picking range can be a challenge.
If you go fast, the abilities may pile up before you have a chance to learn each one well.
