Because spiders don't exist here, or because I don't venture out into this nature thing where they live? Smiley: dubious

Arachnophobia can mess up your daily life more than you know. Spiders exist everywhere, not just out in the countryside. And depending on the severity of your phobia, encountering one can ruin your day. For instance, the link posted earlier in this thread - the link I clicked on and nearly had a heart attack from - it literally scared me witless. I wasn't exaggerating when I said my heart skipped a beat.

When that thing popped up, it felt like something instantly squeezed my heart to mush. My immediate thought was to get away from the computer and not return until after the monitor had shut down due to inactivity. Thankfully, I managed to hit Ctrl-W the moment that thing popped up, so I closed the browser tab before I could get caught up in the panic.

I get that arachnophobia seems silly to those unaffected, just like other phobias seem silly to me, but I'd appreciate it if people wouldn't link to spiders without warning, and definitely not imbed them directly into the threads.

It's a home away from home away from another home... first weekend in 3 that I stay in the city for and the next 2 are back on the farm for last minute closing up ;)

That's a little creepy Gwen lol. Creepy in a funny way though.

Also, hugs @ Maz. My mom has a huge spider phobia like that as well, and from seeing it first hand, I completely understand. One time, I'll never forget. She was cooking in the kitchen, and a spider snuck out from behind one of the pans on the counter she was using, she screamed bloody murder, ran into the living room, fell down on the floor and started clutching herself sobbing. It was kinda funny, just because it was so random, but my dad and I tried really hard not to laugh and go comfort her and figure out what happened.

I'm definitely thankful I don't have any phobias like that. I really don't like scorpions, but they mostly just creep me out. Granted, I live in a climate which is very unfriendly to scorpions, so I've actually never seen one irl. It's quite possible I'd have a similar reaction.

Imagine having that reaction to certain social situations. Situations that you'll HAVE to deal with, whether you like it or not. So yeah, imagine having to touch that spider or at least walk past it.

I fully empathize with people suffering from social phobias. They're forced to confront their fears every day, something I'm glad I don't have to. And yeah, having arachnophobia is less intrusive on your daily life than social phobias.

Doesn't mean I'll gladly go ahead and open up threads where people imbed spider pics because they feel like ******* with me. I don't force anyone here into social situations where their social anxiety can flare up. That was my point: Don't put spiders pics in threads for the sake of poking fun at people with arachnophobia. They scare the **** out of us even if you think it's a minor phobia.

I don't mind if someone imbeds spider pictures in a thread dedicated to spiders or something silly, and I don't mind links as long as I'm not tricked into clicking them. I'd prefer if my exposure therapy was conducted by a therapist, not you guys - even if I love you.

That I can understand. Although it's hard to think of because I just find spiders incredibly fascinating and it's hard for me to imagine not being fascinated by them.

Edit: and the pic I posted is not a realistic spider at all, do you have the same/a similar reaction to that?

A drawing of a spider, like this drawing of a tarantula, triggers it.

And I didn't see your picture. After the first link and the imbedded picture, I now preview this thread before looking, and I avoid all links.

Edit: Oh yeah, that picture does trigger it, though not as badly as the first two. To be honest, you can't really tell it's a spider, if it wasn't for the spiderweb and stuff.

I haven't figured out what is required for it to trigger. Obviously, real spiders trick it, even if they're behind glass or far away. Photos of spiders also trigger it, as do drawings, but to a lesser extent. On the other hand, I've watched Eight-Legged Freaks, Arachnophobia and some b-movie about spiders that hatch inside people (can't find it) without issues.

One can't mock the phobia's too much... It's weird seeing someone reacting from one for sure. Last weekend out on the farm we realized that a mouse had taken up living in the house. The gf had quite a reaction to a mouse in the house freaking out... yet... the mouse was more scared of her... and actually after a poorly placed trap that only caught the tip of his toes.... well I just had to let him loose... inside... didn't know the trap had gone other than it was moved I assumed that it got shoved out of the way... then coming back to the kitchen he came out from under the cupboard all miserable like... OK let you go poor guy... not sure why he's there as ALL the food is in re-used gallon pickle jars or glass canning jars so it's not like there is food just waiting for him to find it.

Boobspider! (No pictures but a story about spiders)

Also, according to BBC, girls are 4 times more likely to be afraid of spiders than guys (Actual picture of a spider at the top of the article).

At least my link earlier mentioned beforehand that it was a spider. Smiley: nod

A phobia is explicitly defined as irrational, and a lot of the time the sufferers will even acknowledge it as such, with no real reason for them to be afraid of the thing in question. That doesn't make it any less of a phobia, though, and knowing you shouldn't be afraid of something doesn't really change the fact that it freaking terrifies you.

Arachnophobia is one of the more normal phobias out there, really. As humans we have evolved to be afraid of things that could easily remove us from the gene pool - stuff like heights, snakes, spiders, etc. Some just are hardwired for it to be more extreme than others.

And then there are the less normal phobias out there, too. My favorite is hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - the fear of long words (if you suffer from this, sorry. Also, never go in The Asylum).

Why the hell do people post pictures in articles relating to phobias? I mean, what the hell?

"Do you suffer from arachnophobia? Here's interesting facts"
*click*

"This is a spider!"
*heart attack*
"You're afraid of them..."

Like this article.

Very first paragraph says:

Quote:
Though many arachnids (spiders) are harmless, a person with arachnophobia may still panic or feel uneasy around one. Sometimes, even an object resembling a spider can trigger a panic attack in an arachnophobic individual.

And right ******* below that paragraph is a close-up of a spider's face.

Die, seriously.

Just so spider-haters aren't the only abuse, here's one for the social-phobes. They're laughing at YOU!

You know, it would be really evil to link a spider there. I swear it isn't a spider. May you hunt me down and string me up if it is. Should someone other than me later change the link or image to a spider this offer of being strung up is null and void.

I don't have any true phobias, that I'm aware of. I am freaked out by most insects and arachnids, but I can deal with them when I have to.

I'm sure with the friends and family I have I'd get tons of involuntary immersion therapy if I did.

Yeah, the Souper Sekret forum episode was interesting. Essentially, once upon a time, there was an OOT secret journal, where certain posters went to mainly ***** about how mean the Asylumites were, and how awful a certian admin was for not banning all the asylumites for being mean to them. This was in the Magi era, so certain misconceptions were being fostered that were not necesarily healthy or true. In this secret journal forum, massive rate up circles were occuring, and users were going from sub scholar to guru in a short period of time. Of course we noticed it and yelled at them, which didn't help the them being hostile to a certain admin issue, especially since Magi was telling them it was OK apperently. So anyways, at some point the asylumites figure out what is going on and decide to start their own secret forum, where they also did some karma shenanigans briefly, before they were told those would also be reversed, back when you could essentially insta create a forum by making forum=whateveryouwanted in the forum URL. so Forum=Sanctuary was born. Not all the people posting in the Asylum were told about forum=sanctuary, though most of them eventually figured it out, especially given that it showed up on forum search and people kept using the word sanctuary cryptically to be amusing enough that even the more dense individuals eventually picked up on it. The few that didn't were rather pissed at being excluded, mainly the poster "youshutup" so he made it his mission to expose that forum, which we were basically ignoring from a moderation standpoint since the asylum didn't have many rules to begin with. Hijinks ensued, etc. It was amusing to watch.

There were a number of other similar magnitude occurances I didn't include in the interests of space. Various angry hippo meltdowns, the entire Deleron saga, Tormentcia vs all the other Asylum female posters at one point or another, Me hijacking Thundra's main account and all 47 sockpuppets in a single instance via the "yarmulke" incident and then having fun with it until Allakhazam asked me give the main account back, The first ever Allakhazam transgendered individual coming out in an asylum thread, Grady's frog, Tacosid vs. the N.A.M., Shadowbania, The worlds first ever "Last" forum game The EQ flamewar days (1 AC is worth 1,000 HP debate, Gbaji vs everyone essentially)

Though much of the previous forums are lost from the old UBB forums, I have collected some of the remaining memorable ones in a thread in my journal. https://everquest.allakhazam.com/journal.html?user=4491&mid=114533705572534025 Many of those were only important to me, but there are some gems in there of old if you go digging.

As far as spiders go, I'm definitly with Mazra on this issue. it's ont an irrational phobia if the little ******* are activly trying to kill you. I've had two run ins with poisenous spiders, one a black widow when I was 10 that almost bit me on the thumb, and one brown recluse that actually ran across my stomache and I hit onto the floor with my bare hand and somehow miraculously didn't get bit. At my other job we have computers and a server in an area where another IT worker found a massive black widow last year. I live in terror of the day that server goes down. Hell, i don't even like going down there to do anything that requires accessing the server directly via the local KVM (on site firmware patching, drive rebuilds for failed drives, etc.). I'm not quite as prone to sieze up upon seeing a picture, but I have very nearly destroyed a monitor or two from unexpected realistic ones.
