So what exactly is a Monk Class?Follow

I'm always hesitant when a new class is introduced. I thought all of the new classes in FFXI were kind of stupid and I didn't like DK for a while... (I still don't have an 85 DK, though I admit I do have an 80)

So what is the Monk class?

I'll assume that it's a melee fighter using very few weapons. I'll also assume they are some kind of healer. But wearing what? My natural assumption would be cloth. But that can't work?

Anyone know anything about it?

Seems like they'll be using their Monk from D3 as a template, so expect to see:

Healing, melee fighting, fist weapons. Possibly even (dodge?) tanking.

Heal, tank and melee DPS tree confirmed. Comically enough, they have a decent lure to tanking by calling the tank spec Brewmaster. Guess we finally know what Chen Stormstout was specced back in The Frozen Throne. XD

A tank that gets so plastered they don't need plate to stand up to damage?

Monks are masters of bare-handed combat, choosing to draw their weapons only for devastating finishing moves. Monk healers bring harmony and balance to every group, healing even the most grievous of injuries with ancient remedies and focused spiritual arts. And few can hope to out-last the unquenchable prowess of the Monk Brewmaster, whose empowering beverages and unpredictable combat style allow them to absorb incredible amounts of punishment.

Edit:

And Maz... Worgen and Goblins are the two races that CAN'T be Monks.

You've got to be kidding me.

Well, guess I'm leveling up that Worgen Warrior after all. Just wish there were some decent +str fist weapons in the game.

Assuming (dangerous word) that they looked at FFXI heres a summary of how monks tanked:

great news! there's been speculation about a monk class in wow years before you left ffxi, so it's not your fault; stop blaming yourself. also, wowers love to listen to ffxi'ers job woes. carry on!

Well, it could work like Hunters, where monks have strikes that generate resources, and strikes that consume resources.

Honestly I dont see the no auto attack lasting for long, come testing I think they will change it back.

From what ive gather this is exactly how it works, you gather Light or Dark energy depending on the moves you use, then have a finisher that cunsumes said points. I could be wrong, but thats how I read it from the notes on WowHead

I used to joke about Monk class years ago, never did I expect it to actually happen. With the focus on gear in this game, a class that didn't use much gear seemed silly. Although I suspect there will be some kind of weapon for their hands slots.

Assumming they looked at FFXI monks? I would be surprised if they didn't. But just because they looked at a class from a different game doesn't mean they'll do it the same. Not researching what the competition did right and wrong to make your product better would be foolish. I damn well hope that Blizzard did their research. Other games have monks too not just FFXI. Blizzard will and should look at what others have done to help them polish their new class into what their idea of it should be. Look at it sort of like reinventing the wheel. You could redo your idea and come up with your own. Or you could see what others have done and see how you can improve on the idea. It's not a bad thing, it's called progress.

If you left FFXI because of monk tanking than you've got bigger problems. Monks may or may not be game changing. If they are Blizzard will change them and/or other classes to readjust. It's the same when the Death Knights came into the game.

How is that a downside?

A class that doesn't use much gear? Wow. What makes you think monks would be more powerful naked than fully clothed? Gear will be just as important to a monk as any other class.

Back in EQ monks could be one of the most expensive classes to gear up. Partly because they were so specialised. However I suspect we will be seeing something a bit different in WoW
