Things About Cata I Wish They'd Told MeFollow

#1 Oct 19 2011 at 8:28 PM Rating: Excellent
A few weeks ago I came back to WoW after a couple years away. At the time I talked on a couple threads here asking what was different. While the answers were helpful, they dealt mostly with changes to the classes and to BGs (which I avoid like the plague).

So for those of you returning (or new) here are some things I discovered over the past few weeks. Many of them I found out today while doing some unintentional corpse runs through areas I thought were safe, while I was trying to get the Hallows End treats.

You now get loads of new flight paths right from the start. If it's not my imagination, you get more as you level too. (Use them folks! I gained a few levels just with the xp from touching down at flight paths!)

Almost all profession trainers are in the first town you get to once you've left your race's initial starting area. There's no need to run to a major city. (In the case of Dolanar, the skinning trainer is no longer way outside of town, and they even teach mining - though there aren't any mining nodes till you hit Darkshore.)

However if you want to get to the major city, every "secondary starting area" has a flight master.

You can level fishing anywhere. You no longer have to be a certain level to cast. Sure you may get a lot of junk if you fish in an area that's beyond your skill, but you can still fish there.

Daily fishing/cooking quests are available in the major cities (SW, Dal and IF for Allies). You only have to have one skill point to qualify, and be level 10 or higher.

Although your favorite addon for quests and gear might be useful still, the WoW interface now handles these pretty darn well.

If you're a low level Ally, DO NOT go to Hillsbrand thinking you can catch the flight point at Southshore. The place is now swarming with Horde. You WILL die. On the other hand, there's an easy road from Arathi to Aerie Peak.

The road through Duskwallow Marsh now ends in a Horde Camp. You can't get to Mudsprocket that way. Meanwhile the Allies built a bridge from Theramore to Mudsprocket. Sorta kinda, I think. But be careful, there's a big nasty Hordie at the end of the bridge. I still haven't figured out exactly how to get to Mudsprocket yet, so if anyone can tell me a safe route (for a mid 20's character) please do.

So those are my discoveries thus far. What are yours?

Swamp of Sorrows now having mobs level 50+ rather than 30-something was a rather painful discovery when I tried to buy a smithing pattern in Stonard. Alliance NPCs in Darkshire didn't like me either on my way there.

Also seems like something in Badlands is the FP to have to connect northern and southern halves of Eastern Kingdoms to allow flying from Undercity to Booty Bay. Got there using a (quest) rocket flight from Light's Hope Chapel in EPL.

That said, it still feels totally weird do be questing in Plaguelands at very low level now.

A lot has changed, but many of the things you mentioned were good changes.

I like that I can find things easier. When I first joined I needed to find a weapons master to train new weapons. I don't recall what it was, but I had gotten some low level weapon and needed to learn. So I went to IF. Found the guy. Then realized that he didn't train that sort of weapon. I needed to go to SW.

While part of that provided a "Feel" to the game - some kind of Grand scheme or environment to the realm... Really - it was just annoying. I don't recall what he trained, but I bought everything he did train - Just so that I'd never have to find him again.

I feel the same way about stuff like profession trainers. While there was a certain magic to be had in running 1/2 way across the world to do some quest or start some chain. A lot of that is lost now. I would just transfer 10G to my alt, and go beg or a Portal. It's not fun to realize that you can't start mining unless your lvl 8 toon runs (as super slow speed) across a massive zone for roughly 10-20 minutes depending on deaths.

Or, my personal favorite...

Spend the last 80 levels tanking with a sword and then, in Forge of Souls, the Lucky Old Sun drops. YAY, a nice upgrade! ......oh crap, I have ~50 skill with one-handed maces.

I have to keep using my old sword until the end of the dungeon, and then afterwards I get to look forward to 4+ hours of beating on some elite mob to get my skill up.

The weapon trainers were just a needless hassle, as were weapon skills. Glad they're gone. Nothing like starting a Tauren and needing 2-Handed Sword training (because the very first green item that dropped just HAD to be a SWORD). In that case, you had to WALK from Mulgore to Camp Taurajo, then from Camp T up to Crossroads, then from Crossroads to Durotar, then from Durotar to Orgrimmar. Once in Orgrimmar, you had to get on the Zeppelin to Tirisfal/Brill and then walk up to the Ruins of Lordaeron, take the elevator down, and then walk to the War Quarter before you can finally equip your sword.

There's a reason why my Tauren warrior is still Level 11 to this day -- I never did get around to logging on him and resuming his leveling. As soon as I realized this, I outright stopped playing the character because I did not feel like taking an hour plus to do all that walking.

You get experience points for mining/picking herbs, so if you're tired of questing and want to make a little money, grab those two professions and go explore.

Skinning doesn't, to my knowledge, give you experience, but since you have to kill stuff to skin it, you get experience that way. Mining and herbalism is for when you get tired of mindlessly whacking stuff over the head.

I'm definitely looking at most of these changes as a good thing!

Some of the new quests are a blast too! I absolutely loved the one with Bravo company in Redridge. The one in Dolanar where you get to run around and starfire demons left and right was neat too.

So the Plaguelands are low level now? How weird. I was avoiding sending my lock there because I figured it'd be a death run. Now I'll try to make it to Light's Hope to raid their candy!

I wasn't aware of the changes to the weapon trainers. Thank goodness! Yes that was a major pain. Not to mention even if you had the skill, but it wasn't leveled, having to leave wherever you are to find some low level mobs so you could wack them a few hundred times just to "practice" with your weapon.

Also, though I think they put that in shortly before I stopped playing last time, you now travel from Stormwind docks to Ru'Theran docks, rather than having to run through the Wetlands to Menethil. And the flight path from Theramore takes you to right to Ratchet. I remember dying a few times trying to swim from Theramore to Ratchet, so I could get to the shops in Booty Bay.

Go to your local major city and check the heroes board, it will if you're at the right point in leveling give you a bread-crumb quest leading you to the currently appropriate zone for questing. Especially with all the revamped zones.

I miss the epic run from Teldrassil to Elwynn Forest, though. Good memories of horrible times.

That was one of the main reasons I never tried to level a Tauren after my first one (got to level 12 or something and was tired of all of the running already) it was just so slow and the zone was way too big for it.

Rejoice!

Not only can Tauren now be Paladins (which is really freaking awesome), but there's also the fact that Mulgore has been re-designed and MANY quests were either streamlined, their drop rates increased, or moved around a bit to include a lot less walking. Also, there are more flight paths, and one character turns you into a spirit bird to help you get from the very first area to Bloodhoof Village faster.

There's also an awesome battle at the end of Mulgore quests too, gives a fairly nice item for its level too IIRC.

RE: Plaguelands: Western Plaguelands is in the low 30s and Eastern is in the high 30s, with Scholomance being ~38-42 or some such. I can't remember what Strat is these days, I wanna say mid-40s but I'm not sure on that. Also, those two areas have been vastly redesigned (I loved Fiona's quests for example), so that it isn't so much of an eyesore and group quest-a-plenty.

Oh, and they FINALLY fixed Battle for Darrowshire so that it actually works now.

With regards to fishing, when fishing from a pool, you will successfully catch that fish regardless of your skill level versus the zone. Makes skilling up much less painful since most of those fish sell and/or cook well.

I tried cutting through the zone that has Karazhan (dead mans pass or something) around level 40 or something, and got brutalized by some mobs over 50. You used to be able to cross the zone into swamp of sorrows without any mobs in the northern part of the area. But no more. There are mobs in the northern part. I wanted to get to swamp of sorrows to find herbs (my alchemy level was pretty high compared to my actual level).

I totally skipped Cata when it first came out, and just a few weeks ago got it. I still haven't done any 80 to 85 stuff, or even explored most of the new areas or quests. They did a pretty good job revamping the areas, but it seems there is no reason to quest after level 17 or so. Once you start running dungeons, that's the only way to level. Doing instances is so much more enjoyable than questing. I actually kind of miss being forced to quest to level LOL. I used to have a lot of fun using the questing guide to level up the most efficient way possible. But now it's nothing but instancing to level up (and herb picking). I haven't done an actual quest (non dungeon quest) in over 20 levels.

So in a way, it seems like a lot of work they did in the old world was for nothing. It's an okay expansion I guess, but not as good as the other two.
