Recount hadn't been invented back then and only the hardcore raiders were using the predecessor to Recount (forgot the name already),

My roommate thinks that the meter we used to use back in the day was just called DamageMeter, though for some reason I can't recall if that's correct.

Edit: Also, if we're talking about the old days, there's always Mr. "I'll tank in cat because I do more damage so I'll hold threat better"*, and Mr "I'm a warrior but I'll use my bow because 'Bow is better'"**.

*I ran into him during TBC. His gear still made no damn sense.
**Turns out "Bow is better" because "Sword is broken".

I've brought up my friend before in other threads who plays a rogue and is terrible. This applies here as well.

My rogue is one of those toons I really enjoy but just never get around to playing. His is his only 85 and has been his main for at least the 2 1/2 years I've been playing.

Last night; Headless Horseman; I managed about 12k. He did 1236.

I don't understand and will never understand. But, like so many of these pugs people complain about, he is super touchy about any comments regarding improvement and will get pissed and start an hour-long train of excuses if I bring it up. I've talked to him, our GL has talked to him (who is also a r/l friend) about proper statting/rotations/UI/etc. He still wears spirit and dodge gear.

So personal knowledge of "one of them" aside, to answer a previous question, I have tried talking to people about how they might improve. Over the 2 1/2 years I have tried this numerous times and not once, ever, have gotten a positive response. So I gave up quite a while ago. If anybody asks or makes a comment "man i just can't get this rotation down" then I'd say something. Besides, it seems the worst thing that can happen to a pug these days is conversation. Annoying but true.

he wonders why the heck people with much better gear -- in those same dungeons -- seem to have trouble.

has he been playing at the elite level so long he forgot how bad the average player is?

Had one of those in SM on my shaman yesterday, Pold. Only instead of a druid tanking in cat form, it was a ret pally who queued up as tank, and refused to use a prot spec. The healer and I were pretty verbally abusive towards him, I admit. >.> We started off asking nicely, but he insisted that his prot gear was crap and he'd be a better tank if he stayed in ret. We made it through, but the healer wasn't happy.

Did he use wings? After a couple of issues in Firelands last week we've started making sure out pallies have wings before every boss, Makes it a lot easier to dps.

My point is, is that they made Ret Paladin DPS so freaking complicated (even I don't "understand" all of it). You got having to try and keep Inquisition up, knowing when to use Guardian of Ancient Kings, when to use Zealotry, and then you got all sorts of procs flying at you ("OMG, I got both Art of War AND Divine Purpose up... GAAHHH!!!!") you have to know what's left on your Inq timer, you have to think of which you should do first, TV or Exorcism, blah blah blah.

Some people consider it "cheating", but I'd recommend trying out a rotation helper like CLCret or CLCinfo (I prefer the latter, but setup is annoying, clcret is ready to go right away pretty much). It basically takes all the guesswork out of the priority system and suggests what ability to use. You still need to manage Guardian and Zealotry on your own, but it will track Inquisition and help with TV vs Exorcism issues. I talked a new recruit into trying it out and his dps went from 14k to 18k just because he wasn't missing Inquistion time as much and randomly mashing buttons.

As for when to use Guardian/Zealotry, I always pop them with Inq and Avenging Wrath as soon as I get my first 3 holy power, and then use them on cooldown. Not sure if this is the best usage, but I find if I kind of have a routine, I don't forget to use them.

It was SM, I'm not too familiar with pallies, but my 54 pally doesn't have wings yet, so I don't think they did either.

I think you mean Righteous Fury, because you don't get Avenging Wrath (wings) until 70something.

Yes, Righteous Fury. We always call it wings, any clue why we do so? I haven't played a pally or looked too closely.

"Wings" usually refers to Avenging Wrath. Notice the screenshot. Smiley: tongue

Righteous Fury is just a buff that increases the threat holy damage causes (or did they change it to all damage?). No wings involved in the animation or anything.

Ah, I figured out why we call it wings, the icon is wings. Just a bit of slang mismatch.

Oh yeah, it's a sword with wings. Never noticed that until now.

I've only ever used and seen Wings used as a reference to Avenging Wrath. Righteous Fury seems to go by the abbreviation RF most of the time. Sometimes it's "OH GOD TANK, PUT ON YOUR BUFF **** THAT MAKES US NOT WIPE!"

That's usually mostly in Zandalari dungeons, though.
