If we were talking about actual beatings, I'd volunteer. Verbal beatings aren't quite so much fun. Smiley: sly

Blast from the past, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Yep. You haven't been happy since TBC. While I respect your skill and sometimes even enjoy your analysis of game mechanics, isn't two expansions of unhappy enough?

I definitely have to admit to being more vocal about aspects of the game which I feel are turrible than those that I enjoy.

I do have my posts talking about aspects of WotLK that I liked such as the lore, the leveling, Ulduar, the change to spell rotations to stop simple 111112 type spamming. Of course there are more posts talking about T7 or how T9, while excellently designed in terms of encounter mechanics, was just too short to be a tier.

With Cata I agree with your "Villain of the Month" club paragraph. We had finished a story arc that started in WCIII back in 2002, Blizzard was worried that people would feel that they had beat the "end boss" of WoW and if you go back and read the release and build up for "Deathwing" in the period when 4.0 was in development to Cata going live it is clear that they were trying to lessen that by minimizing Arthas and stating "you think he was bad guyt, this new guy is going to break the world". Which really is a shame because WotLK really felt like it had built the Horde/Alliance grudge match up (even though at the ICC there is some resolution). So I am glad they are moving to a Horde/Alliance dynamic because if anything that is a better jumping off point because the conflict has hindered both sides against the true enemy for a long long time and eventually I would like to see a unified force going toe to toe with Sargeras.

Cata at release was rough, but thankfully the PvE content was well designed. However I did leave because I did not enjoy where healers were at in T11. Since I have come back I have gone into HM's with my Holy Paladin and Resto shaman and I have enjoyed Firelands even though the instance has taken some heat (pun intended) on the fact that it is too short.

WotLK I had my gripes but I enjoyed the over all experience. Cata did kill the game for me and I did leave for the summer but got roped back in because I am an addict and they had made enough changes in my absence to make the game playable. I can definitely say that as one of the mass of people who left and came back, or left and was thinking of coming back the announcement of what is in details so far known appears to be a lackluster expac with asian fever really doesn't speak to me. Right now I am mainly feeling out whether I am committed enough to down Deathwing or if I just cash out now and wait for D3.

The "Villain of the Month" club for expansions has been a pattern for too long. Remember when Warcraft was "Orcs vs. Humans"? There is supposed to be a simmering conflict between the two that keeps getting shoved into the background. Now, it looks like we're getting a chance to give that some attention. The villains of the expansion may be something that has been growing unseen in forgotten lands instead of (yawn) another leftover from the Titans, a corrupted hero or returning villian recycled and yelling that "X was merely a setback" or another Aspect gone mad. On the other hand, it might be that guy on the throne in Stormwind/Orgrimmar.
Problem with that approach is that you have to effectively vilify the opposing faction leaders to pull that off. Which doesn't really work if the other faction has player characters in it. Not to mention it doesn't help create conflict unless you involve some absolute evil. Regardless of the post-WCIII apologizing, that's what made Orcs vs Humans work so well between Warcraft and Beyond the Dark Portal. You had an absolute evil that was pretty much bent on conquest and destruction. You had the option to play as them, but in the end that's what they were. WCIII and WoW introduced the million shades of grey we currently see, but in the end the players have always been thrown to some absolute evil.

At least for me, I can't see how that approach would work unless you decide to throw your hands up and give up entirely on trying to progress lore in the game, because both sides would have leaders that are on farm by the opposing side.

Also, although I doubt that it was a major factor in design, Asian players are a very large part of WOW's player base and this gives Blizz a chance to throw some things out for them to enjoy.
Considering they're not that different from us aside from the music they put to their raid kill videos, I'd say they're enjoying the game already.

I'm fine with most of Cataclysm now. The initial "woopsie, broke your class" thing was annoying, but they sorta, kinda fixed it.

My only issue with the game right now is that healing is like playing whack-a-mole, just like it was in WotLK, only they completely changed Druid healing to a point where I'm no longer finding it fun.

I see no reason, at all, why anyone would want to play a Resto Druid over a Resto Shaman (or Holy Paladin or Priest if that's your thing). Resto Shaman have better AOE healing, better burst healing and better mp5.

I think that's going to be too much of a pain for them. I mean just why would a bear switch to bear form? It would be extremely odd if you wouldn't look just like in your "normal" bear form. Seeing how they did it with the other druid classes, they would more or less be limited to like rounding the ears and such. Too damn strange to have a bear to get smaller when he actually switches to a bear form that's supposed to be big and badass.

And if they would make an exception to the panda bear form, who would still want to play the generic form the other druid races have?

Why would Worgen need to use a Travel form when they run faster on their own? Why would Worgen need to switch to a Cat form to Rake, Rip and Shred an opponent when they've got bigger claws in their Worgen form??

They already passed that line of "why would they...?" when they made Worgen Druids.

I think the main thing that bugs me about Blizzcon in general is that it feels like it starts expansion hype a bit too early. Not only is everything still unpolished (and has always been so when announced, promising everything that floated around the forums and then seeing what gets cut later) but the timing sucks attention away from the next content patch. Sure folks who go on the PTRs can have explored the hell out of the new stuff and gotten bored with it, but it causes momentum issues for other folks. I think the proper time for an expansion announcement is when it's familiar to the designers enough to head off misinformation (none of this "Pandaren Warlocks" stuff) and close enough to coming out that the last content patch is *just* beginning to lose its shine. If some mechanics need to be floated into the crowd for opinions (new talent system) do those separately.

I have to choose between Feline Swiftness and Dash now?

Are you @#%^ing kidding me, Blizzard?

Oh, and final tier for Druids looks absolutely terrible from a tank's point of view. 6-minute cooldown on an ability that doubles my armor and regenerates my MANA?! Seriously?

Also, Shaman's first tier abilities are completely useless for PvE.

Basically, they're taking existing core and talent based abilities, removing half, adding a cooldown to the rest and forcing us to choose between them.

Yay for less choice?

Feline Swiftness, Dash and Vanish. I can see what they're going for, though, at least in the druid trees. Each choice gives a different way of boosting the same attribute.
Tier 1: mobility
Tier 2: boost next heal, get a self heal, or get a new heal (earthshield-ish? Kinda need final numbers to judge it)
Tier 3: CC of some sort (slow, root or knockback)
Tier 4: move and small boost, big boost longer CD, or boost via summoned allies
Tier 5: AoE disorient, deathgrip, or single-target stun+damage
Tier 6: Boost changing forms in some way, either minor (break CC+heal), medium (boost other form while in current one), or major on CD (lets you take on another role to some extent).

Different specs or even different styles of play will find different tiers more interesting, but I think as long as abilities are balanced well (numbers-wise, which we don't have) against each other there's no obvious weak talents.

From a PvE perspective this is the biggest *********** I have ever seen since RAWDEAL's "leaked" info on the expansion.

No, really. Look at Tier 3 for a PvE Cat. Now look at Tier 6 for a PvE Bear.

My immediate reaction was:

Oh yeah, I forgot.

I know these talents aren't the ONLY abilities we'll get. There's the whole leveling up thing as well, but the choices seem so poor right now. I honestly hope this is just an example version, or at least an early alpha version.

If my PvE Kitty has to choose between snares and AOE pulls, I'm gonna cry myself to sleep.

Well, obviously it's an early alpha version. I'm sure there will be lots of changes made during the beta. They made quite a few changes to talents during the Cata beta.

True. Knowing Blizzard's development team right, we'll not see the final version until a year into the expansion. Smiley: grin

Seriously, though, this version sucks so incredibly hard, it makes me wonder why they didn't try to spiff it up a little. Or at least make sure to write "example only, not final version" somewhere, like diagonally across the entire thing.

Technically, it's an improved version of Dash that also breaks roots and snares. Also, of all people, I thought you would be happy with the idea of the level 90 talents, since it encourages switching forms to something you aren't specced for for a short time. The numbers and exact effects are still pre-alpha. Heart of the Wild only lists 2 examples of effects. Since Bear and Cat are being split into Feral and Guardian (I think that's what they're called), that's actually the talent bonus for kitties. In other words, for 45 seconds every few minutes, you can go bear and do a decent job of it, or heal and not OOM immediately (bunus intellect and MP/5, instead of just Agi as healing power).

As for Shamans... I'm thus far not impressed. Some of the others seem a lot better, so I'm thinking that all classes will have their trees changed a lot between now and release. I'm hoping that Blizzard's main idea for BlizzCon was to show there's a theme for each level, and you can choose from one of three abilities in that theme.

Technically, that version of Dash is the current version of Dash due to this.

I made a PvE Kitty spec.

Tier 1: 20% movement in Cat Form
Tier 2: 30% self-heal
Tier 3: 50% snare on Faerie Fire
Tier 4: Feral Charge
Tier 5: Ursol's Vortex
Tier 6: 6-minute CD that allows me to pretend to be a healer/tank

Tier 3 and 5 are basically useless for PvE. Tier 2 is reactive instead of proactive mitigation, which means by the time you heal up, a healer will already have targeted you and started to cast a heal on you. Having to spend one out of six talent points to get Feral Charge is just...

And the last tier doesn't feel epic at all. The entire thing feels like a PvP circle jerk.

Not impressed.

I guess the problem is that most of this feels uninteresting and not very "fun". Having core abilities removed and forcing you to choose between them isn't fun. Why can't I have Dash and 20% movement speed in Cat form?

The main issue with these talents is that some are awesome, and some are just ****. As long as they have abilities that deal damage/healing, there's going to be theorycrafting and a cookie cutter spec. If that's what they want to avoid, then they need to make it all utility. That means movement speed, stuff like Void Shift in the Priest tree, etc. Not making Blast Wave a level 90 talent in the Mage tree.

These have a lot of work to be done.
#148 Oct 23 2011 at 7:14 PM Rating: Excellent
Something that needs to be done before we can truly judge the new talents: let us know what's being kept as class and spec skills that we get automatically. Right now people are looking at the 27 talents we pick between and assuming, consciously or no, that we lose everything else.
#149 Oct 23 2011 at 7:21 PM Rating: Excellent
I assume what they'll be doing is baking a lot of the spells into the specs, rather than make them baseline. They mentioned, for example, that Circle of Healing will be baseline for Holy Priests, so it won't show up in talents but still be there.

But I'm guessing it won't just be one spell per spec, rather a whole slew of spells. so Circle of Healing, Guardian Spirit, Chakra, Holy Word: Chastise, Lightwell, etc. Seems obvious to me, but it never hurt to state the obvious.

This, to an extent. Some of the things we do lose, evidently, but it's true that we'll likely retain a lot of core abilities.

This isn't going to stop cookie cutter builds, if anything it will make it stand out more. This water down version only makes it idiot proof. Seriously, MMO and cookie cutter builds go hand in hand.
