The Blizzcon Thread: Let there be PandasFollow

#1 Oct 18 2011 at 11:22 PM Rating: Excellent
I went ahead and spoilered the Pre-Blizzcon stuff. Let's try and keep this all consolidated this year, so we don't have a thousand and one threads made when they announce the next expansion. I'll try and update this thread as much as I am able once Blizzcon goes underway. Until then, let's speculate!

Here's what we know:

Quote:
  • Titan will not be at Blizzcon this year.
  • Blizzard trademarked the name "Mists of Pandaria" and used the format they would for an expansion.
  • J. Allen Brack, the WoW Lead Producer, hinted that Pandas and the next expansion will be talked about at Blizzcon.
    Quote:
Q: "I have tons of questions about the next expansion but that's not something you can really talk about." A: "That sounds like something we may potentially be talking about at BlizzCon." Q: "Does it have to do with pandas?" A: "That sounds like something we may be talking about at BlizzCon." Source.

The following is my prediction of what will be announced this year:

Quote:
  • WoW Expansion IV: Mists of Pandaria
  • MoP will give a new class, most likely a spellcaster/healer, and Pandarens will be a neutral NPC race heavily involved in the story. Will likely take place in Pandaria and surrounding islands.
  • Diablo III Release Date
  • Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm release date/timeframe
  • Blizzard's own Starcraft II DotA map's release date/timeframe

I know we've already done a lot of speculating in the other threads, but this is a good time to make any last solid guesses. Blizzcon starts this Friday, October 21 at 11:00 AM PDT.

For Blizzard's official schedule, click here.

For MMO-Champion's schedule with a countdown to events and automatically adjusted to your timezone, click here.

Remember: If it's about Blizzcon or something announced at Blizzcon, post it here! I'll be posting the news for WoW, Diablo 3, and SC2 as it comes in. I won't be posting about the tournament, most likely. I just can't watch that stuff.

Ok, here's what we now know:

Mists of Pandaria is the new expansion.

  • Level cap: 90
  • New Race: Pandaren. You will decide at some point between Alliance or Horde.
  • New Class: Monk
  • New Continent: Pandaria
  • Pet Battle System (Pokemon.)
  • New Talent System
  • "Challenge Mode Dungeons"
  • PvE Scenarios

There will not be a central villain, instead it will focus on the Alliance/Horde conflict.

In addition, Blizzard has launched a new subscription option called the Annual Pass. It's basically an agreement saying you are going to pay for twelve months' worth of WoW time, but you get to choose the payment plan (monthly, every 3 months, etc.). It's just an agreement that you will pay for 12 months. Doing it gets you benefits like Diablo 3 for free, guaranteed access to the Mists of Pandaria Beta and an in-game mount in WoW.

MoP Trailer:

The official Mists of Pandaria page is up.

More details are beginning to go up of MoP:

Quote:
What is Mists of Pandaria?
  • The goal is to combine new gameplay with most fun parts of the past.
  • The plan is to get people back into the world, instead of having players roam around Stormwind and Orgrimmar all the time once they reach max level.
  • Developers want you to do what you want to do to progress your character. They really want you to feel like you have a menu of content where you can pick whatever you want to do, and you shouldn't feel forced to do something to progress your character. For example, daily quests will reward you with valor points but it will still be faster if you raid of course.
  • Character builds are going to be entirely revamped. Talents were still too cookie cutter, so the developers want to give players more choices in their talents.

Pandaria
  • 5 New leveling zones to explore
  • Single, unified continent
  • Influenced by Asian landscapes
  • AH, Bank, and Central Questing Hub
  • No flying until max level
  • There's 5 leveling zones but they are very large zones, and you won't have your flying mount.

Lore of Pandaria
  • A long, storied history.
  • Magically hidden since The Sundering
  • A new land to explore....
  • Pandaria was discovered during the cataclysm, a naval battle between horde and alliance was taking place close to it.

Pandaren starting zone
  • It's a turtle! It left Pandaria 10 000 years ago and never came back. Pandarens who wanted to discover the world left on that turtle.
  • Story focused with simple mechanics
  • Cross faction, choose Horde/Alliance at level 10.

Creatures of Pandaria
  • The Jinyu are fish-like creatures and will be in a wide number of zones.
  • The Hozu are a monkey-like race, they stand up on their legs and can walk around. They play tons of pranks on the local pandarens and are also in a lot of zones.
  • Verming are ... new kobolds, they kinda look like evil bunnies.
  • Mantid: Whole raids and dungeons around this race. Insect race that has been there since the beginning of ages. They have been seperated by a giant wall. They are starting to go crazy and are going through the wall
  • Mogu: Ancient race, original race on pandaria. The mogu want the island back from the pandaren, they are really mad. You will see them in dungeons.
  • Sha: Manifestation of the evil energies that flow through the earth. If there is any sort of battle these guys pop up.

The Jade Forest
  • This is where Alliance and Horde will be landing. The horde is washing up on the north side, the alliance on the south side. There will be one unified start zone and Alliance/Horde will end up meeting up in the middle.
  • Lush rainforests and stone spires
  • The Alliance will try to become friend with the Hozu, and the Horde with the Jinyu and will try to turn them against each other.
  • Temple of the Jade Serpent will be the dungeon of this zone. It will be your 85-86 Dungeon, it has been taken over by Sha

Valley of the Four Winds
  • Two zones for the price of one! This zone is huge, the whole north side of the zone is pandaren farmlands, the south is a coastal jungle.
  • You will get to choose between the north side and the south side when you arrive. You can go back and switch side if you want the other quests.
  • The dungeon of this zone is Stormstout Brewery.
  • This is where you will have your first interaction with the Mantids, they broke through the wall and are now attacking pandarens villages.

When I get some free time I'll transplant all of this into a new thread we can sticky.

That's the selling point for Blizzard's own streaming service that you can pay for - they're not going to be giving it away for free.

I'm sure there's less than legitimate third party sites mirroring the stream out there if you Google it, but I'm not going to be posting that here.

Soon.

I'm checking out the stream Wowhead and WoW Insider are hosting, and they raised an interesting point:

On the schedule there's an entire hour devoted to "World of Warcraft Class Talent System," which is different from the past years where there's the typical Class Q&A. This has given rise to speculation that they're not going to be adding a new class, but instead are going to be making some sweeping fundamental changes to the talent system. Whether this means something more akin to the Rift system, or a 4th spec for all classes (least likely option, I think), or something, we don't know. But current speculation is pointing towards no new class but instead new things for existing classes.

Also, despite everything we've been seeing about Titan not being at Blizzcon, in the past 24 hours there's been new reports that they might go ahead and show it at Blizzcon, according to the stream. I have no idea what the hell sources they're talking about since they didn't exactly say where they saw this, and I couldn't find anything about it on Google.

I still think they won't be showing Titan this year, but it's something to keep in mind.

If they show any of Titan, I would be willing to bet it's just concept art and not anything to do with gameplay. Blizzard is famous for teases and they know if they don't show us anything this year they have to wait another year til next Blizzcon to tease us.

Now remember: The Opening Ceremony is when they usually make all their big announcements, and the Opening Ceremony is included in the free stream Blizzard is doing. I highly recommend watching if you have the time/ability.

Here's the link.

They've started showing stuff on the stream. Right now, it's just self-stroking trying to get people to upgrade to the virtual ticket and showing all the stuff you get when you do. T-minus 27 minutes.
#12 Oct 21 2011 at 11:43 AM Rating: Excellent
Oh God, the footage from last year's dance contest that they just showed. My eyes.

Expansion announcement confirmed by the stream, as well as a "new talent system". Pretty much what I outlined above.

But we all knew that was going to happen anyways.

Opening Ceremony starting soon, I'll be editing in updates to avoid shameless +1ing.

11:00: Starting. Here we go.

11:00: Blizzard's been around 20 years. Showing a flashback montage of the games.

11:03: Mike Morhaim came out, power rock playing. Cheers. Ugh, he plays Terran.

11:05: Talking about success this year. Mentioned rogue legendary (some boos), mentioned that everyone around the world is currently playing the same version of WoW. Talking about SC a bit. Talking about how this is being broadcast worldwide.

11:08: Blah blah, still lots of Blizzard history.

11:10: Began talking about new game content (D3 beta, SC2: HotS, Blizzard DotA) all available for play at Blizzcon.

11:09: Mentioned the server blade charity auction for St. Jude.

11:12: And we're back to Blizzard's success this year. Namely, esports and how much it's spread so far (mostly SC2, mentioned WoW PvP).

11:15: Previewing what's going to be at Blizzcon this year, nothing new.

11:16: Diablo 3 time. Showed boxart for the first time. Boxart

11:16: D3 Collector's edition. @#%^in' awesome box. Includes in-game items for all bnet games, artbook, behind the scenes dvd. soulstone usb drive (comes preloaded with D3, has a holder shaped like Diablo's skull)

11:18: WOAHWUT. Diablo 3 will be free to WoW subscribers. Details: Sign up for the 12-month subscription to WoW that will be billed monthly. By signing up for that, you get D3 for free when it launches. Can sign up today.

11:19: THE @#%^!? Do what I just said and you get guaranteed beta for the next WoW expansion AND an ingame mount (Tyrial's Mount, similar to Invincible/Celestial Steed but Angelic)

11:20: Handing it over to Chris Metzen, showing a video of the last 15 years of Diablo.

11:25: Metzen comes out. Typical hamminess. He's wearing an Alliance sweatshirt and carrying a Doomhammer. lolwut.

11:27: Here we go. New expansion soon. He said it.

11:28: Diablo 3 touting. Going to show a cinematic.

11:30: The Black Soulstone cinematic shows. Was edited slightly to avoid spoilers, but is very epic.

11:33: Starcraft discussion time. He's taunting WoW players.

11:34: Blizzard DotA: contains heroes from all Blizzard Franchises (Thrall, Kerrigan, Arthas, etc.)

11:36: Showing a Heart of the Swarm cinematic. We've seen it before. Maybe not. This is longer and more detailed. Shows new units. LOTS of new awesome units.

11:38: WoW time.

11:39: Past expacs have been dictated by a new villain that the factions have to scramble to deal with. True villain of the franchise is goign to be "War itself."

11:40: "War is coming", major conflict between the factions is what he's saying.

11:41: Next expansion is set in a place "lost to time for close to 10k years".

11:42: Land was balanced and peaceful until we arrived bringing our war

11:42: This "gentle place" is... GET TO IT

11:43: Trailer.

11:43: Showed Vanilla, BC, WotLK, and Cata clips

Now THOSE are interesting. Huh. That might even get me to re-sub. If you were going to buy Diablo 3 (and that's one of the few console 'must-haves' in my sights for the immediate future), then you effectively save $50 on a year-long subscription of WoW at the same time.

So how much is this annual pass? If it was something like $10/mo it may be OK if you are getting a $50-$60 game for free anyway.

Also, which faction does the Panda fight for or are they their own (which would be weird in itself)

Ok, here we go. Mists of Pandaria is the new expansion.

  • Level cap: 90
  • New Race: Pandaren (Don't know how this will work with Alliance/Horde. Likely get to choose faction)
  • New Class: Monk
  • Pet Battle System (Pokemon.)
  • New Talent System
  • "Dungeon Challange System" (Can't tell what it is).

There will not be a central villain, instead it will focus on the Alliance/Horde conflict.

This should be interesting.

What's interesting is that Pandaren were actually planned to be the Alliance race in Burning Crusade, but they changed their minds halfway through.

I'm assuming a year pass is something that is going to be added in the future?

$14.99/month, or other billing plans you choose. It's basically a commitment that you make to pay for a year of WoW.

Pandarens choose a faction to join at some point in the starting experience. There will be Alliance and Horde Pandaren.

It's available now. It went up the instant they announced it.

Aaaaaand the free stream is done, so I'm done frantically jotting down notes.

I'll pay attention to other news outlets and post it here as stuff comes out, but that's the big announcement.

From their FAQ about Annual pass:

Quote:
World of Warcraft Annual Pass FAQ

What is the World of Warcraft® Annual Pass?

This promotion is a limited-time offer that provides you with a free copy of the highly anticipated Diablo® III, access to the beta test for the next World of Warcraft expansion, and Tyrael's Charger, an exclusive in-game mount for the associated World of Warcraft account, when you agree to a 12-month World of Warcraft subscription commitment.

How do I qualify for this promotion?

To qualify for this promotion you must be an adult in the United States of America, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or Singapore and have a valid Battle.net® account with an attached North American or European World of Warcraft region license in good standing on or before October 18, 2011. Also prior to accepting the offer you must have a recurring World of Warcraft subscription active on the associated account. Other restrictions may apply and can be found in the Terms and Agreement.

I have multiple World of Warcraft accounts on my Battle.net account. Are they all eligible?

While you may sign up for this promotion on multiple World of Warcraft accounts attached to a single Battle.net account, only one Diablo III license and one opportunity to participate in the beta test for the next World of Warcraft expansion per Battle.net account will be added.

What if I have an "unmerged" World of Warcraft account (an account that hasn't been associated with a Battle.net account)?

If you meet all other eligibility requirements and would like to take advantage of this promotional offer, then you would need to first create a free Battle.net account if you haven't already and associate your World of Warcraft account with that Battle.net account. All of this can be done at https://us.battle.net/account/management/wow-account-conversion.html. For further information about merging a World of Warcraft account with a Battle.net account, see this FAQ.

Can I create a new World of Warcraft account to take advantage of this promotion?

To be eligible for this promotion you must have a World of Warcraft license in good standing on or before October 18, 2011. New World of Warcraft accounts created after October 18, 2011are not eligible to for this promotion.

My World of Warcraft subscription is lapsed or inactive. Can I reactivate my subscription to take advantage of this promotion?

Yes. You will be eligible to receive a free copy of Diablo III and the other benefits of this promotion if you meet the qualification criteria and once you reactivate your existing World of Warcraft account and agree to a 12-month subscription commitment.

If I sign up on multiple accounts, what do I get?

Each additional World of Warcraft account that signs up for this promotion on a single Battle.net account will be able to receive the exclusive in-game mount, Tyrael's Charger.

When will I receive Diablo III?

Diablo III will be available to download via your Battle.net account when the game is released.

What if I purchase Diablo III separately?

Only one Diablo III license may be attached to a Battle.net account.

What if I purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition?

If you decide to purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition when it's available, and then choose to add your Collector's Edition license key to the Battle.net account associated with your existing World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion, you will receive all of the benefits associated with the Collector's Edition, plus receive four months of World of Warcraft game time which is eligible towards your 12-month subscription commitment. After you purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition you just need to input the product key into the Battle.net account associated with your World of Warcraft 12-month commitment and that account will then receive the next 4 months of World of Warcraft game time for free. For example, if you already had a month of game time on the associated World of Warcraft account when you input your Diablo III Collector's Edition product key, it would then be 5 months until your next subscription payment was due.

When will I receive the Tyrael's Charger mount?

The exclusive Tyrael's Charger in-game mount will be added to the selected account and available via in-game mail with the release of Patch 4.3.

Is the mount available for all characters on the account or just one?

Once activated, the exclusive Tyrael's Charger in-game mount applies to all present and future characters on the associated World of Warcraft account.

Is Tyrael's Charger a ground or flying mount?

Tyrael's Charger can be used as either a ground or flying mount.

What speed is the mount?

The speed of the mount scales based on your riding skill. This can vary from 60% ground only with Apprentice Riding to 310% speed while flying with Master Riding.

Can I cancel my World of Warcraft subscription at any point during the 12-month term?

By taking advantage of this special promotion, you are committing to a 12-month World of Warcraft subscription, and you cannot cancel your subscription until the 12-month term of the agreement has ended.

Do I have to have a recurring subscription for the entire 12 months?

Yes, a valid recurring subscription must be maintained during the 12-month commitment.

Can I use game cards with this promotion?

Any qualifying game time added to the account may apply to the 12-month subscription requirement.

Can I use PayPal to make monthly payments for this promotion?

No, PayPal is not a valid method of monthly payment for this promotion.

What if I need to change the credit card for my subscription?

You may do so through Battle.net account management; doing so should not affect your 12-month commitment.

I have an active subscription already; what happens to the time I already paid for?

Any qualifying subscription time remaining on the account at the time of accepting the Annual Pass offer may be applied toward the 12-month subscription commitment.
For example: If you had started a 6-month subscription 2 months prior to accepting the Annual Pass offer, 4 months of your remaining subscription time would be applied toward your 12-month subscription commitment.

Can I use the beta-test invite for a beta test of my choosing?

The beta-test invitation will only be valid for the next World of Warcraft expansion.

Is the beta-test invitation transferable?

No, the beta-test invitation is only valid for the Battle.net account associated with this promotion and may not be transferred.

Why would I pay full price though per month if I am guaranteeing to pay for 12 months? Heck if you do 3 month it is $14 and 6month it is $13.
