I just bought Baldur's Gate 2 on GOG.com

I think it's the perfect point where old meets new. It has the feel of a retro RPG with actual tactics and skill, but without the feeling of "OMG I can't believe I used to think this was fun" (it's from 2001 or so, I believe). Best part is I can play it on Windows 7 within a virtual machine on my Mac without any 3D support!

I've played a bunch of other retro games over the past few years - Ultima Underworld comes to mind - but found they were all pretty terrible. I'll leave the rest to be fondly remembered via rose-colored goggles.

It's quite devastating to see how those games haven't changed a bit while realizing the changes you went through YOURSELF over the last couple decades. Perception changes a lot over time.

I still occasionally prefer the original Starcraft to SC2. Nostalgia + familiarity can be comforting when all you want to do is unwind.
