Returning Player With a Couple QuestionsFollow

I never owned my own account, I used to play from a friends just to try that game while WotLK 3.2 was out. He's actually playing now and I haven't played since Cataclysm was released, so I'd like to get my own account and join him. So I have a couple questions if you guys could help me out:

1) He wants to do recruit a friend to get a free month. I don't think we'll level together so the faster XP perk probably won't benefit me. I had another friend who tried to do this with someone, and he said the transition from RAF account to retail is not instant once you buy it. It takes a day or two. Is that correct or have they changed it? I don't want to get stuck at level 20, not being able to whisper people while I wait for my retail account to kick in.

2) Which expansions *should* I get off the bat? I imagine I could get away with just vanilla/Burning Crusade, but if I hold off on the other two do I miss out on anything? Do I need Cataclysm to create a character with one of the new races?

3) Does leveling to cap take about the same time it used to, or have they made it faster? I'd like to hit cap ASAP to be able to join raids with my friend.

4) Knowing myself, I'm probably going to level one toon and stick with that one for the foreseeable future. I like to play roles that are useful, and not sit with the other couple hundred DPS looking for group. Are tanks or healers more in demand? I remember when I used to play Druids were pretty good at everything, which I found appealing so that I could fill whatever role was needed. Is that still the case? What are some of the top tanks, and top healers in the current game?

I think those were my main questions, but if you have any other info you might think I should know I would appreciate that too. Thanks a lot!

I can't answer for all of the questions, but I will answer to those that I can.

2) In my opinion, you should get all of the expansions right away, you need Cataclysm to create worgens and goblins. With burning crusade you can only create the original races + blood elves and draeneis.

3) Leveling is pretty fast now. Of course it will not be the fastest for you since you can't get your hands on heirlooms items because you've never had an account of your own.
But the good news is that it's still pretty damn fast to level up even without heirlooms and if you find a high level guild (There are plenty of ''all perks'' leveling guilds out there) you will get nice perks that will give you +10% experience gains and such.

You get insane amounts of exp by doing random dungeons once you've hit level 15 and if you like PvP, you get exp from that also (especially daily random battleground wins give alot of exp).

4) Healers and tanks are in demand, they both have pretty short queue times, but tanks still have it the fastest, almost instant.

Cataclysm brought alot of changes to Azeroth, places have changed a lot and I had a lot of fun myself doing the new zones.
So have fun and you'll be level 85 in no time :)

1 - No idea.

2 - You should probably get all the expansions sooner rather than later. Especially if your goal is to hit max level ASAP.

3 - Leveling is pretty fast. 1-60 questing as been streamlined and dungeons give crazy amounts of exp. Even without heirlooms or guild perks it's pretty fast.

4 - Tanks and healers are always in demand.

Thanks a lot for the info. What are some of the best tank classes in the game, and likewise what are the best healers? I remember when I used to play Druids were good multiple target tanks and Warriors for single targets, etc. Priests and Druids were generally better healers than say a Shaman. Is that more or less the same, or do different classes excel at these roles now?

As far as healers go, druids are pretty OP right now. They're also fairly simple as far as rotation goes. Pally healers are good too, as are disc priests. Holy priests are a little tricky, with the lack of spirit gear in Firelands, but otherwise they're good. Shamans... well, let me put it this way. One of the best healers in my guild, who has played a shaman as his main since the game came out, switched to a resto druid a couple months back.

As far as tanks go, warriors, pallies and druids are all pretty strong AFAIK. DK's have great AoE threat potential, but they're also very squishy. In my entire guild, with probably about 200 members (excluding alts), there is only one person who's main is a DK tank. Actually, DK's as a whole are pretty rare in my guild. In addition to the one DK tank, there's only three people who play a dps DK as their main and one is currently inactive.

As for the recruit a friend I did it a few months back and there was a small problem with upgrading from the trial to full account because of a mistake we made setting it up but just a simple call to customer support had everything fixed right away. There were a couple things that weren't availbe right a way such as AH and trading items with players etc however there was NO lvl 20 cap that was removed right away just some of the perks took a couple days to be activated. The bonus exp was workin right from day one and doing a random dungeons with my RAF partner we were goin up 2-3 lvls per dungeon becaue of the quests being given in the dungeons now. The 300% bonus applies to quest turn ins as well!
