Research - Online Relationships in WoWFollow

#1 Oct 05 2011 at 4:54 PM Rating: Decent
Research title: "Love and Romance in World of Warcraft"

My name is Cherie Todd, I game in WoW and I am a PhD student in the geography programme at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. As the title of my research suggests, I am interested in talking to gamers who have experienced an intimate connection (past or present) with another gamer while in World of Warcraft. This is a very relevant topic because every year more and more people are finding love online, including on-line games. However, very little is known about intimate relationships within on-line gaming environments, and as we know, gaming is an extremely sociable activity for most of us. As a result, I would like to talk to people about their experiences of love and romance in WoW.

Participation: To be involved in this study you must be 18 years or older.

Your participation will involve completing a brief on-line questionnaire about the relationships that you have experienced while playing World of Warcraft. This questionnaire can be completed in your own time and should only take about 10 minutes.

Research principles: As a participant you have the right to:
• Refuse to answer any questions;
• Ask any further questions about the research;
• Anonymity and confidentiality, and;
• Withdraw from the research at any time.

Confidentiality: I will treat all information as private and confidential and any identifying characteristics will not be disclosed in the course of this research. Any information pertaining to third parties will also be treated with the same respect.

Click on the link below if you would like to take part in this survey.

Thanks for your time,
Cherie

Note: Survey Approved 10/4/2011 ~Administrator Kaolian~ ZAM.
(Approval to conduct this research has also been granted by the University of Waikato FASS Ethics Committee).

You should contact one of the Admins before posting surveys.

Hi, I have been granted approval by the Administrator Kaolian (as stated in my OP) but perhaps it's not obvious enough. Will do a re-edit. Thanks for the feedback.

Took the survey. If you would have read her (I think?) complete post, you would have seen Kao's edit saying the survey was approved. Smiley: tongue

To be fair, I posted at 7:00, and the post was edited to include Kao's tag at 7:10.

The way surveys work, is that someone PM's or e-mails me the survey. I then tell them to either go ahead and post it, or deny. If the survey is allowed, I ask them to include in their posting the phrase "Survey Approved <date> ~ Administrator Kaolian" and send me the link. I then reply in the thread with the confirmation. It's not an edit. This works because anyone who decides to try and fake an approval from me for a survey is going to get far worse than a ban. Given the nature of e-mails and thread creation, its not unexpected that there is a little lag between when they post the thread and when I confirm it.

In this particular instance, Talenz asked ahead of time, provided all the requisite information, and its a survey that we haven't seen here a dozen times before with proper collegate credentials, so I would encourage anyone interested to fill out the survey. It's rare that we actually get someone who reads the forum rules on survey posting ahead of time.

My very first post had Kao's tag in it. I would not have posted without it. However, it was not bold and huge like it is now. Hope this helps clear this up. Thanks for your post Kao :)

I was wondering why a forum regular was doing love survey.

It actually had it in the post before the edit. I saw the original just after it had gone up.

I'm sorry but I don't understand your question. What do you mean by "forum regular"?

I think Mental was referring to me. Either confused due to both of us using the same forum stock avatar when you originally posted this, or because I actually filled out the survey.

Im not sure if this survey would include myself or not. My wife and I met on a different MMO (Ultima Online) 14 years ago while we were both in HS. Found out she had family that she visited a couple times a year that lived 20 minutes from me. We tried the online thing for a while, found it didn't work and just stayed friends. Fast Forward a few years, she needed a change so she moved in with me, we started dating and have now been married for a lil over 3 years.

At first I thought PT was posting a survey. Damn these changing avatars! =P

Also: +1 for going back to the correct one PT. Much better.

First, sorry for the avatar mix up. I'm new to the forum and didn't mean to hijack anyone elses avatar toon Smiley: grin

Second (in response to Vilaca's post) although the survey focuses on WoW, I think the topic also applies to other MMORPG's. I've already had a few people discuss relationships they were involved in when playing other games, so please feel free to take the survey.

Don't worry about it. It's a fact of life when you use a forum stock avatar. Smiley: smile

I refuse to use a stock avatar. Is too confusing.
