Finally, no longer being mugged for orbs. As a JC and Alchem I have run hundreds of heroics and was never able to roll. Now I can hate the RNG and not the game.

Will be interesting to see how cutthroat prices will be the first week of 4.3

A nice change regardless.

Time to finally make myself one of those hawt dresses. Smiley: yippee

Though I guess I need to level my tailor high enough to be able to buy the pattern. Smiley: laugh

As I've always said, they shoulda done that in 4.2 when the Orbs were still meaningful.

In 4.3 when new stuff is out, 359 is really showing its age and the 365 weapons are going to be kinda 'meh'...

Unless, of course, new crafting patterns will be released that *still* take Chaos Orbs, but I highly doubt that surely.

Heck, they should have done that in 4.1. About stinkin' time.

The 378 FL drop patterns take both Living Embers and Chaos Orbs. I expect that Embers will be deprecated in the new tier but Orbs might remain, to incentivize crafters to keep running heroics.

Yeah, I don't see why they wouldn't require orbs for the new raid patterns. That'd be silly not to do so.

I agree - about time!
Maybe I will actually be able to use my crafting skills to actually make things for other people now - though obviously the stuff won't be in demand now. I can't count how many times I have seen people looking for someone to craft something that I have the ability to make but I didn't have any orbs. I don't run a lot of heroics and even when I do, I tend to lose the roll on the orb most of the time. It's frustrating to be a 525 crafter who can't sell their crafting ability except for the occasional leg armor patch. I also have a 525 Blacksmith and a 525 Tailor who never have any orbs but who have the skills and patterns to make things people actually want.

It will be too late for me to make gold off of this of course but at least it might ease some of the frustration. I hated the soulbound Primal Nethers in BC and I loved the boe Frozen Orbs and thought that was a huge improvement. It made it a lot easier to gear up my characters with their own skills (something I've missed since Vanilla) and it gave me a chance to make a little gold with my skills as well.

Now if only they'd make Dreamcloth unsoulbound as well. Although I suppose it'll be easier to get them made with just the chaos orbs, since that particular recipe has no CD.

It'll be costly, but don't worry when patch 5.0 comes out they'll be cheap.

Always thought Tailoring was kind of unfair.

On one hand, you can make 5 cloth per week without any orbs at all, but yet it takes a HUGE number of mats to do that,

Or,

You can make ONE cloth with FIVE orbs. FIVE. Didn't they think the price was just a tad steep there? I could understand 1-2 orbs, but Five?

Hopefully lots of people running heroics means the price will go to 100g or less but meh. We'll see. It'd be nice to make a couple weapons for alts and such, as I've had truegold rotting in the GB for several months now.

I have the exact opposite problem. I have an engineer who has ran out of uses for chaos orbs. I've been hoarding them in case Blizzard adds a new recipe that will require them, but to no avail. So I have like 7 or 8 orbs just sitting in my bank, collecting dust.

Not to mention one of the most infuriating problems with this system: people who are ridiculously over geared are rushing heroics and skipping bosses just so they can get to the end for a Chaos Orb. This makes it really difficult on us trying to gear alts. Skipped bosses means lost upgrades, JP for upgrades, and reputation for upgrades.

I personally run heroics because...I know this will sound utterly insane...but I like running dungeons. I enjoy them. I want to kill every boss even if I don't get anything from them, because I enjoy it. Really frustrating to keep being told by the tank "I'm just here for the VP" or "I'm just here for the Chaos Orbs"... which translates to one simple thing:

"I don't give a damn about you. You are a means to an end for something I want. I don't care if you waited in line for 20 minutes and will be in line for another 20 minutes. I don't care if you need upgrades. You are a tool that I am using to give ME what I want."

That kind of attitudes makes me downright angry.

In the LFD, it is always "memememememememememe" and nobody cares about anything other than getting the dungeon done as fast as possible.

Even lesser-geared tanks who still need JP will still rush to the end boss for some stupid reason.

And the main problem I have with the Chaos Orb system?

My Blacksmith is not my main character. I'm not gearing up my Main -AND- my Blacksmith for Heroic Dungeons.

Hell. No.

That's why the orbs should have never been BoP in the first place. Not everyone is blessed to have a blacksmith as their main character, and not everyone feels like gearing up (and going through the mental torture of LFD Heroics) with one or multiple craft alts.

When I'm tanking LFD groups and occasionally feel like skipping a boss I ask in party. If even one person wants to do it, I'll go ahead and do it. If you want to skip everything...go make your own group full of like-minded people. Otherwise, stop using people to get you virtual loot. My time matters too, and I don't want to waste time in queue when I could have spent 5 minutes getting to and killing a boss.

What amazes me the most, however, is not those rushing to the end of heroics. But when people in anything less than an 85 dungeon intentionally skip massive amounts of easy to kill trash and bosses. In Gundrak, groups regularly skip the ramp leading down to the 2nd from last boss (they jump into the water like it was heroic). I calculated the XP through a few runs (without BoA's). And skipping through those pulls was about 50k in XP. That's about two, two and a half normal quests in Northrend. Please tell me where in Northrend you can complete 50k in quests at level 76 in less than 5 minutes from accepting quest to coming back and turning it in.

Obviously, I understand low skilled or geared groups that are struggling. They don't need to add anymore hassle. But when you have a group tripped out in BoA's rushing to the end is just plain stupid. You're missing out on such massive amounts of easy to get XP.

*cough*

/endrant

So yeah, no more BoP orbs = good. Cheerio!

The new crafting patterns do indeed use Chaos Orbs along with "Essence of Destruction". MMO-Champ put up a list a little while ago, which has dropped to page 3 at the time of writing this.

That's quite a bit of a change to how it used to be, with patterns only needing whatever orb-type dropped in the current raid tier whenever the dungeon type was made free to trade.

I very much appreciate that move because it means that orbs won't be entirely worthless to anyone but jewelcrafters.

The change should have come with the last patch, though. The Molten Front crafting patterns are nice and all, but it's highly annoying that you have to take your smith to grind them, even if you're deep into playing a different toon by now. I mean I realize that them purplez shouldn't come cheap and easy, but the truegold requirement sorta prevents that anyway. It makes even less sense considering that all the other Molten Front rewards are there to allow quick gearing up for Firelands, and that simply shouldn't exclude the weapon slot.

It's those patterns that now become worthless, with better stuff dropping from the new dungeons. Regardless of how the AH prices for orbs turn out to be, who is going to be insane enough to waste the gold for 8 truegold bars on something that's so easily replaced?

People who don't know any better. The same types of folks who do things like throw Elemental Slayer on their melee weapons as a hunter or Black Magic on their Volcanospike as a mage.

You know, clam stackers.

This. My engineer ran heroes for about a week or so. I made goggles and have had about 8 orbs siting in her bags for the last 3 months or so.

And this. I have 8 85's. I have all but tailoring maxed. I raid on my shammy who does skin/LW so that's the only one I bother running heroics on because I feel compelled to get as much valor as I can. None of the others who I could actually use the orbs on I really have time or interest gearing/running heroics just so they can craft something.

I have a lot of orbs on my druid, I'm going to check the market when they go BoE and either sell or keep for personal use.

My 2 main toons have Orb professions so collecting them over time has not been an issue. Will be nice to spread them around as needed though.

Wish I could say the same; my Alliance main is an Enchanter/Miner.

I didn't have the foresight to make her a Blacksmith, Engineer, Tailor, or Leatherworker before Cataclysm came out.

*rolls eyes*

I like how Blizz dumps these kinds of changes. They had Orbs BoE all throughout Wrath then all of the sudden, the major craft reagent is now BoP and they expect you to have known ahead of time, or gear up all your alts for Heroics (which at the time when Cataclysm first came out, were very stinking hard).

They should have been BoA at the very least from the start.

I am fairly certain Frozen Orbs were BoP until at least the first patch of Wrath. That was a long time ago and my memory sucks, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Fairly sure they weren't BoP, ever.

At least I don't remember them being, and even if they were, it was only the first patch. They didn't wait to the last third (or quarter, or whatever) of the expansion to un-bind them.

I think they may have been BoP, but it was not very long and anyone could roll on them. Because I think I remember being excited about the patch...but I may be wrong. I'll see what I can find.

I could find no evidence stating they were BoP at one time. I remember in one patch you could trade in orbs for eternals through Frozo the Renowned.

Thanks! I have a bad habit of posting right before work and didn't have time to look it up. I was thinking they were soulbound only very briefly, but I could be confusing that with TBC because like I said, my memory is worse than terrible.
