Well, I've gotten annoyed by the low level characters who "steal" somewhat popular names and then horde them. It might make me sound like a snob, but if you aren't even going to bother leveling your character to 85, why bother giving them a common name that other people are going to want to use? For example, my favorite name is Maeve. I have not been able to use it on a single server because it's always taken. But I have never ever seen a max level character with that name.

It's very possible that the name is on the list of names that are automatically 'rejected' because it is the name of a major lore figure and against the naming rules.

I don't think that's the case with Maeve at least. Back during Vanilla, one time when they released new servers I created a level 1 toon of my own and managed to snag the name. That was on my old account though, so I don't have it anymore. =x

Yeah - I think I was wrong in that case though I've heard there are words that are automatically rejected.

I tend to avoid names that I see around a lot. When I first started, I didn't know to check the armory to see if the name I wanted was popular or not. That's why my main has a fairly popular name and it bugs me a little but not to the point of changing it. I didn't know that it was close to the name of an instance boss at the time. It just sounded like a suitable name for a Shaman with magic and voodoo connotations. :/

On later characters, I have tried to come up with truly unique names but even then, I have found if I post with those characters on the forums, suddenly I see 'my' name popping up in armory on other servers. So much for trying to be original. Heh

It's spelled differently than the major lore character, so the actual name might be blocked. Edit: Nope. There are 103 characters with that name.

I pulled my Worgen's name from an online site listing baby names(I used names classified as older British names) and somehow missed that I had named him the same as a boss in a certain tournament themed dungeon. It gets really old how many people ask me if I'm "pure".

My usual response: Not since the time I got drunk in Gnomeregan.

Sadly, the only character I have whose name doesn't show up multiple times during a BNet search is the one I named using the game's name generator. Smiley: laugh
