I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Finally. They should have done this years ago, or better yet never allowed it from the start.

Because there's nothing more fun than being told "invite (gibberish)" and needing to figure out how to spell it.

Their fault for being French Canadians in the first place.

Now I have to rush to take all the variations of Legolas before they stop it.

I hate when people make up full names But one accented character isnt that bad. Most of my alts have an accented character so i could get a name that I liked while not overusing it. Stuff like Kröd, Bacön, Ragnarök (Notice i use the same character a lot so I don't have to remember a ton of alt codes) I also tell someone the alt code when being invited to stuff. Also I make sure its not the first or second character so you can search my name if you have to (eq /who Bac, Ragna,Kr) which ussually makes it easy to find me too.

I have one alt-code character in my shaman's name, and that's just because I wanted to keep the same name when I realm-transferred.

I don't mind accents. My keyboards come with most of those symbols available so it's a matter of holding down Alt or Ctrl while hitting some key.

What I do hate is when people hide the symbols, for instance when they use the 'i' with the accent (Ã). Not only does it annoy me to no end when I have to re-read the name just to find the accent, it also means that the creator of the name thinks, like the rest of us, that the name would look better without the accent.

Yes, it sucks when people use the name you wanted to use. Look up Mazra on the US Battle.net and guess how many of those characters are mine. **** happens. Get creative.

I had a DK named Aléxa because Alexa was taken. It annoyed me to no end whenever I played it, to a degree where it made me delete the character and start a new. Or at least was a contributing factor (I also did it because I wanted a race change and the armor sets from the starting area for mogging).

I never had an issue with people using 'special' characters in their character names when it was obvious that it was meant to be like that. Of course I still have trouble inviting those people but I find ways to work around it.

It's the people who use the characters because the name they want is already taken who pretty much have ruined it for the people who actually want names with special characters. I can understand that sometimes you just really have a specific name in mind and it's frustrating when it's already been taken but do you really want to 'share' a name with one or more people on the server? I know that sometimes it's done as a joke but when all those Legolas and Sephiroth clones are 85 and raiding, problems start to arise. What happens when one of them gets a reputation as a ninja or a jerk or a poor player and suddenly people stop inviting you because they remember "that holycow guy is an idiot" even though you are hollycow or something similar.

(I'd have used special characters in the examples but my netbook won't do the alt codes or at least I can't seem to figure out how to do them on it.)

Well, I've gotten annoyed by the low level characters who "steal" somewhat popular names and then horde them. It might make me sound like a snob, but if you aren't even going to bother leveling your character to 85, why bother giving them a common name that other people are going to want to use? For example, my favorite name is Maeve. I have not been able to use it on a single server because it's always taken. But I have never ever seen a max level character with that name.

Although really this doesn't affect me. The names I usually use have almost always been free. Even on Proudmoore, every name I've come up with to use besides one has been available. The only one that isn't is my PvP mage, so it's not likely she'll get invited to many groups. I don't even play her that much right now.

Pretty amazing actually, I was the first Anobix (I made it up randomly, it doesn't exist elsewhere that I am aware of). Surprised to see how many (if only 10 others) have been created since then. Makes me wonder how many of them saw my character name and decided to use it.

*cough*

I'm glad they made this decision. Its as annoying has hell. Although, I hope they add "last names" to allow more variety in character names. I think the current one name is a bygone of an older age that should be changed.

Ewww. Why would you name a character that!?
#17 Sep 29 2011 at 8:59 PM Rating: Good
I multibox and when I create a new group, I like to have a theme for the names. I would use an accent if one of my key names was not available, but that's it.

And yeah yeah, I know you all hate me, down with multiboxers, blah blah blah....

The worst is when it is the first character, then you need the alt code as tab complete wont work.

I'm actually surprised I'm the only Beohrn. Sure the Tolkien character's spelled Beorn but it's an easy spelling change that looks natural rather than Legolaz. Maybe he'll show up in the Hobbit movie and we'll see an influx. I used to name all my characters off of Tolkien, taking names and playing with them until I got one I was happy with. Selebrin instead of Celeborn (though that was in FFXI and for some reason I've never felt tempted to reuse the name in WoW), Nienen/Nienor and of course Beohrn.

That said there ARE plenty of Beorn spelled properly, and every one of them who isn't a feral druid fails totally.

I am so, so disappointed. I had neither enough coffee nor the right pair of glasses and misread the name as "Beohm". Given the aforementioned lack of coffee, I kept imagining Inspector Clouseau trying to pronounce "bomb" and it seemed to fit for a RAW thread. I was hoping you had Engineering:

I'd just have them whisper me. WIM would open up a new dialogue box with a handy invite button. Smiley: grin

Been wondering the same as well. Mazra was a name I came up with as a surname in Star Wars Galaxies before WoW was even in beta. I needed something that rhymed with Chazra... don't judge me.

Had no idea Mazra was a common character name. 61 Mazra on eu.battle.net and 210 Mazra on us.battle.net. I was the only Mazra for the first year of WoW, though. Smiley: waycool

My warlock's old name was Zit. Any time someone told me "nice name" I always said "Thanks. I'm named after my dad."
"Poppa Zit".
Always got a laugh.Smiley: grin
