Stamina levels for tankingFollow

#1 Sep 27 2011 at 8:17 AM Rating: Good
So I have a lvl 19 Protection Warrior, just started tanking and was informed (very politely and helpfully which was much appreciated) that my stamina was too low due to poor gear. Did fine in Ragefire at lvl17 and deadmines at lvl 18 but got rocked in shadowfang where I got the helpful suggestions on getting better gear. I went to the auction house and bought a bunch of gear heavy on the stamina boosts. I'm now at Stamina 83 (gear kicked me up about 23 points. Is this a sufficient level for tanking lvl 17-25 dungeons, or should I try to gather more gear?

Honestly I don't see why it should matter to much in low level dungeons like those. I think the real problem is people have almost come to expect the tank/healer to be decked out in heirlooms. With lower stamina you might be harder to heal, but I don't think should be a real problem if you have a capable healer.

If you do want to get better gear try running the specific lower level dungeons a few more times to pick up some gear. You can look on sites like wowhead.com to see what gear is dropped where.

You can also buy some enchants if you feel so inclined. There's quite a few lower-level ones that raise stamina. Many of the recipes are typically only made by people leveling the profession, so they can go for dirt cheap. If you have an extra 5g or so you may well get yourself an extra 10-15 stamina if your server has a good market for it.

Also the best way to know if you're ready is to jump in. Smiley: smile

If your gear is mostly green or better, around your level(I replace anything not filled in by dungeons/quests that's more than 10 levels lower than me via the AH), and has stamina on it that isn't absurdly lower than another stat on it, your gear is fine while leveling. The requirements will get higher as you approach 80, naturally, but for now that'll be fairly good enough.

This. Healers especially have gotten into the habit of expecting to just HoT up the tank and do DPS in the lowbie content. =)

At your level, the str/stam mail gear out of dungeons should be fine. More important than your stam is your character level. If you went into Shadowfang at 18-19, you're going to take far more damage from increased hits and crits due to the level disparity. Go to the dungeon finder and check the dungeon levels before you queue. If most of them are orange, go do a level or two of quests before you queue. Shadowfang at 21 was a lot easier to tank than at 19 =)

Good luck and welcome to the Wonderful World of Tanking!

Thanks to all for the helpful advice. I feel more confident now that I'm geared more appropriately. Also good advice on not trying to Tank too high of a dungeon. Guess it's a lot easier to get away with as a damage dealer.

It really isn't. It's just harder to notice when DPS fails unless you're looking for it.

A few things:

1. While leveling there are very few "Gear Requirements" in instances. Generally speaking you are looking at level requirements. So, for example: Instance X is intended for level 20-25. If you are level 20 - you will likely have troubles unless you are really well geared - or with a good group - or with a group who's bad, but of higher level. If you are level 25, you will find most of the instance extremely easy.

2. Generally speaking - Tanks need to be better geared or at a higher level. So, sticking with the instance level @ 20-25.... A level 20 DPS will slow the group down, but won't cause a wipe. A level 20 tank may make the healer struggle and could cause a wipe.

*At level 85 you'll see this too. DPS can enter an instance and sort of 'coast' or allow others to 'carry' them. As the tank is the only one who's supposed to be taking lots of damage or the healer is the only one who's supposed to be healing - these roles are often much harder to 'skimp' on.

3. While leveling, don't waste too much money on the AH. I think we all find it tempting to replace items - especially ones that are very old, but it's generally a waste of money. Your better served to get items through quests and the occasional instance run. If you think about it this way... Buying the BEST piece available at lvl 25 may cost you ~50G. You will likely hit lvl 30 in <5 days and that piece will now be out of date and due for replacing. You just spent 10G per day for a piece that only filled 1 slot.... Not really worth it.

*Exception: Find an enchanter and get a "Firey Enchant" - it's a nice buff for lower levels. You could easily make a lower level wep work from 1-25 or even higher depending on your class/luck... And from 1-20, that wep will simply be OP.
