Buying a new headset?!?!?Follow

As the title states, I am going to buy a new headset tonight on the way home from work. I recently tried to use Vent and found that people could hear me talking but I could not hear them. All other sounds (WoW music and SFX as well as the Vent logon/logoff tones) were coming through the headset fine. I'm really not sure if this is a problem with the headset or not, but me and a couple of guildmates worked on the problem for about 2 hours one night and could not get it fixed.

So I guess i have 2 questions. Do any of you have any idea what my problem could be? And, if I do need a new headset, does anybody have any suggestions for a reasonably priced headset with a mic?

Enable direct sound and turn the volume up on voice chat. If you hear everything else fine, it sounds like you only need to adjust some settings. You can adjust each person's volume separately, so that you can account for people having different microphone sensitivities.

I tried all of that.

It's not like I'm hearing them faintly, I'm hearing nothing at all.

That's weird. I can't believe it would be something wrong with the headset though.

If nothing else works, you might try uninstalling vent and reinstalling it again with the latest version. That might put all the settings back to default.

Are you on a mac? One of my guildies struggled with vent on his mac for a while.

Me and the Mrs. both use this. I wouldn't recommend them, unless you're just looking for something cheap, in which case they sell for like $30. They get uncomfortable after a couple of hours of raiding.

No, I'm on a PC. And I already uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times.

The person I had helping me try to fix it was very knowledgeable and very thorough, so any basic fixes you can think of, we probably tried. we even went to online Vent tech support forums and couldn't find anything like this.

The only thing I can think of is that I got rid of my PC's speakers a while back, but I am almost positive I have used Vent since then with no issues. I'm also pretty sure my headset would override the speakers when I plugged it in anyway.

I'm pretty sure my current headset is an older model of that. It's a wired Logitech USB headset. It's not too bad, although I will admit after having it on for a couple of hours my ears feel like crap.

If you get a new headset, I suggest USB. It acts as a second sound card, and I really prefer using USB over the sometimes finicky phono jacks.

That said, there are a wide range of prices and comfort in any headset selection. Over the years I've gradually moved to more expensive choices. My current favorite is the Logitech G35 surround sound headset, which my son and I both use. The sound is excellent with surround sound enabled. Be aware that it is a bit larger headset that totally covers your ears.

If possible, be sure whatever you buy has soft earpieces and is a comfortable fit.

My current headset is a USB headset and I wouldn't use anything else. I am also quite fond of Logitech's products, so I will look into that G35.

Edit: Yeah, no way I'm spending $100 on a headset.

You may be having a codex issue. Double check to make sure you're using the same one that the vent server uses, reinstall audio drivers, and try updating the software for your headset, it there is any.

As far as headsets, I use the Logitech G930, which is the wireless version of the G35.

I use a plantronics headset and I love it. It may not be USB, but it's one of the most comfortable headsets I've ever encountered. It's got padding over the head band part, and all around the ears. Like, a lot of padding. It's awesome. Now granted, the head band part has broken, but I've also had the headset for over two years and probably haven't been that gentle with it. Considering I spent $50 on it, I'm still happy with the purchase. I still use it, it's just held together with duct tape. Real classy, I know. =x

I also use a Plantronics headset. I picked it up after Christmas for $20 (a third of the regular price!) because my cheap Logitech over-the-head headset doesn't fit my small head. The Plantronics one stays on perfectly and the sound is way better than my old one. It's relatively comfortable, but I wear glasses and find that my right ear gets squished between the earpiece of the headset and the earpiece of my glasses, so that gets painful after awhile. I've started putting my headset on, then my glasses and that seems to eliminate the issue.

I'm seconding this post. I actually use the same headset. The hard plastic between headphones broke on mine, but nothing some crazy glue couldn't fix. Good as new, still working beautifully, and still happy with the purchase after about a year of use.

!!! I didn't think of using Super glue! I feel like such a dork now. Super glue would probably work much better than duct tape. =x

Erm, so last night when I was trying to remove the duct tape, I accidentally cut the wire. >.> Is it possible to strip the wire down a little it and reconnect them, or is the head set shot now? Anybody know?

strip the wires down a bit, certainly will re-attach depending on how much cable you have available on either side.

Just connect them like to like. Not a bad task, but duct tape keeps your geek cred more than superglue ;P

Thanks Gwen. I'll give that a shot when I get home. Duct tape stripes are still on the head set though, so my geek cred remains! :D

So I didn't buy a new headset over the weekend, mainly because I was scared to go too far from the house with Tropical Storm Lee brewing, partly because I'm not sure my headset is the problem.

Does anybody have any ideas for what could be wrong based on my initial post?

As a last resort I will buy a new headset and if that doesn't fix the problem just return it and say it was uncomfortable.

You can receive audio, you just can't hear people speaking on Ventrilo? Huh, that sounds a lot like a software issue, but I'm not familiar with Vent, so I don't know what might be causing it.

You haven't accidentally muted people on Vent, have you?

Anything that could be considered a "basic fix" has already been tried. I have spent about 3 hours trying to fix the issue. The most I have gotten coming through vent is some garbled "interference type noise" one time. Other than that, Vent is silent except when I log on or off.

As previously stated, WoW sounds come through just fine.

Windows 7?
Is Ventrilo configured to go directly to the headphones or the default device?
Did you check your inbound gain and the sound levels on the mixer (windows volume control thingy)?
Is the headset USB?
---> If so, have you tried rebooting with the headset unpluged and then re-attaching it? Making sure it is functional before launching Ventrilo?
---> Did you launch Ventrilo before or after WoW? As Administrator?
These are the problems that usualy crop up for most people....

Sounds like Ventrilo hasn't been set up to use the correct device for output. Could be conflict somewhere in Windows' sound settings, but I have no idea, to be honest.

Open up your sound recorder accessory that comes with Windows. Verify that you can record and playback a sample. If that works, it's not the headset.

Also, try starting both Vent and Wow as administrator, by right clicking on their icons and saying Run as Administrator, or configuring the shortcut options to always do so. See if that helps.
