its actually pretty nice to be able to have a 2nd monitor basically when your doing crap like herbing.. or mining.. and you wanna watch some videos on your main screen or projector.

just thought id share an alternative to an actual 2nd monitor. You can get pretty good images of 70" which is what i love about this thing.

I never really understood the idea of having two monitors. You can't look at both at the same time, so you might as well just run the game in window mode and run the video/whatever in the background.

I can Alt-Tab faster than I can turn my head.

But I guess it's nice with a projector for movie nights.

That's pretty cool. I just want one of these bad boys -> http://www.uberreview.com/2009/06/nec-drops-a-curved-43-inch-display-for-8k.htm

Cheapest I've seen for something like it is around $5,000.. so I will not be getting one anytime soon :(

There is a lot of downtime especially when playing wow. I like to be able to read chat windows and such while being able to watch whatever video uninterrupted. Sure i can alt tab. but sometimes theres a billion window open. from web browsers, to chatting programs, bittorrent clients etc etc.

And yes projectors are nice for movie nights.. if i have time and im not lazy ill get some movie picture up of it in the living room

I find it extremely handy to have 2 LCD. One for wow, the other for Ventrillo and Chrome. I also find it handy to snap a portion of my screen like crafting mats, or someone who asks for something in chat or in game mail, into my screencapture software as a reference up on the second LCD.

I wouldn't want to alt-tab out. I have to remind my son far too often to tab back in and accept his summons, etc, when he is alt-tabbed out on facebook.

I recently tried playing wow in 3D and was blown away by how awesome it was. while I don't think it's suited to raiding or running dungeons, for exploring and doing quests it's really cool. I also just got a nice 720p projector that does 3D so my plan is definitely to hook that up and see what it's like to play huge screen 3D wow.

I just got lucky buying one used off a friend.

Some of them are actually coming down in price quite nicely though.

I'm reading your post and replying to it while helping my friend on a quest.

I couldn't live without 2 monitors.

I think I'd find a projector more annoying than helpful for WoW, though.

Imaging having a full screen with almost nothing on it, just your character in the battle. On the 2nd screen you can have your chat windows, raid bars, etc. Less clutter with more of the actual action to see.

People who don't really understand dual monitor setups has never really used them. Every time I've heard people ask why you would ever need to have 2+ monitors has changed their minds quickly after actually using them. It's not just multi-tasking but spreading a program over a bigger area is really nice, e.g. multimedia, video editing, etc..

But you can't play and write at the same time, so it boils down to how fast you can switch between the screens compared to how fast I can hit Alt + Tab (which is quite fast).

I prefer my information on the same screen. Same reason why I'm not a fan of minimalist UI setups. And having to turn my head to check vital information like health bars and stuff... no.

I'll admit I've never really used dual monitor setups, but the few times I have, I found it to be really annoying. I prefer single monitor setups. Not that I have anything against dual monitor setups, I just don't find them useful in games.

And it annoys me to no end when people run their chat on the second screen. I've had some cases in PUGs where I had to run in front of the tank and yell at him in /say just so he'd notice the text.

Although it can be nice for multi-tasking, the biggest benefits are for multimedia programs. In video or graphic editing you've got a lot of tools and information you need on the screen. You also need to see the actual output of the movie or image you're editing. For things like browsing and word processing it's not as useful.

That has nothing to do with dual monitor setup. WoW doesn't support it yet. Some people just don't notice chat, I have a RL friend that doesn't seem to notice anything in his chat window.

I would like to see more action on my main screen and all the nonsense I don't need but still need to know on my secondary. It helps with the immersion a bit more. That big dragon blowing flames across the room isn't blocked by Sally flirting with the guild.

There are ways around that.

Adds the ability to change the game's viewport. This modifies the size of the rendered world, so that you can place UI elements outside of it.

That's true as well. I've noticed that a lot of players who primarily do PvP have issues reading the chat. I blame Theo and Aeth with their minimalist crap. Smiley: tongue

Alt-Z immersion time, go!

That's not a real workaround. This would be the way to go but the screen is rendered at the full resolution. In other words even if the world is completely blacked off on one screen the game still has to fully render it as if it were filling the entire space. It's a waste of processing power. It's a very poor design as far as this goes.

That's just ignoring the issue.

Two monitors is awesome, the boost in productivity is amazing. I couldn't imagine working with only 1, having just 1 at home is starting to get annoying.

But can you see your BG or instance pop?

I can.

I can also have a movie playing on one side and still be partially paying attention to the game.

You can't do that with alt-tab.

My question - with small monitors around the $100 mark (I know you're not from here, maybe a bit more?) why not?

I always browse the web on my little 5-year-old 17" Samsung LCD ... In fact I'm typing this reply while watching my smelting...

I can hear my instance pop. Also, I have sick APM and can Alt-Tab every couple of minutes to verify that the instance hasn't popped yet.

As for watching a movie on the side while partially paying attention to the game, it's a skill I do not possess. If I put on a movie and run the game on the side then chances are I'll forget all about the movie or the game. I guess I'm just weird like that. Something about my empathy or whatever you call it.

I'm using a 24" Samsung LCD for all my viewing needs.

Yeah, extremely annoying.

I just love being able to monitor a bunch of terminal windows at the same time, especially when troubleshooting things. Or reading (or writing) documentation on one screen while messing around on the other. It's plain awesome to have your local machine on one, and your remote desktop on the other monitor.

Only thing that would make it all even better would be being able to turn at least one of the screens by 90 degrees to nicely fit an entire page.

Not really, no, but I guess it depends on what you use the computer for. If I'm gaming then one monitor is all I need. I can't watch movies while playing video games, because I'd only be able to focus on one. As for internet browsing and whatever you do when you're not playing video games, Alt-Tab works just fine.

I have a 24" Samsung LED, that's awesome and all that stuff, but I decided to just use this old like, 15" 4:3 Sony monitor as a second monitor, just to see how it would look. Quite frankly, I'm addicted. The monitor is horrible, colors are washed out, but it does what I want it to - lets me see people message me in skype while I'm playing Deus Ex, instead of having to constantly alt+tab. Lets me open up a walkthrough on one screen, while playing The Witcher II on another.
If I had the money, I'd probably buy a decent second screen. Not necessarily 24", because that would be overkill, but at least one that's the same height, both in pixels and in just size.
The only downside is nVidia's drivers prevent my poor 560 TI from downclocking itself with a dual-screen setup, causing it to idle at much higher temperatures than it needs to.
