so ive decided to enter the world of healing and im lvling a priest after much,oh why lie not thought in the matter, ive gone disc.
ive been doing pretty well in dungeons then again im only lvl 42 and most dungeons barely need a healer
but i have started to do Scholo and healing is required now up to now ive concentrated on keeping the tank at 100% of health and sending a renew on the dps that got some dmg
after running scholo several times ive realised that just isnt enough now i have no problem healing the whole group but i just dont have the spells as i tried to point out to a warrior tank wearing intellet gear!!!!
i have tanked a lot and my priory was always to keep damage first away from the healer second from the dps so they can do their thing.Has healing or tanking changed so much that i should be healing the whole group all the time and then to make matter worst the tank as the audasity to tell me im slowing him down cos i need a Mb after he decided to take the whole room thats about 12 mobs in one go and noone died and beleive me it wasnt down to him!!!
I realise healing will get more complicated or harder as i progress but can i really expect to be punching the keyboard
or should my priority still be tank then dps??

I believe you will find that it is a solid balance of both. The tank won't really need to be topped off at 100% all the time, so he can sit with a renew on and have 80% HP and be fine, and just watch the DPS and toss a heal on them if they need it. It is a bit reactionary, but at that level you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Also, if you see a warrior tank wearing int gear (I hope it was Str/Int though for a paladin? Even with that though they should be wearing 'Bear' gear), just ignore him.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I had a hard time reading your post, rgp1603. Try breaking it up into paragraphs for easier reading. And remember a space after commas and periods.

Can't comment on healing since I gave that up a while back, but as a tank, my priority is: healer first, DPS second, DPS who do stupid sh*t - never.

I've tanked my share of dungeons with an Arms Warrior who thought that Sweeping Strikes + Bladestorm was an okay opening move on a pack of trash, especially if he could do it before I even reached the pack. I've had Death Knights and Warriors cuss me out for not being able to hold aggro through their Howling Blast and Whirlwind crap. I've had DPS call me a fail tank because I lost aggro one one mob (out of ten) because said DPS wouldn't switch targets or use aggro dumps after pulling aggro.

As a Druid, I have one taunt and no ranged silence. If people mess up my LOS pulls, which happens more often than you'd think, I tell the healer to let the DPS die and then I solo the mobs once the DPS dies. I'm not going to let the healer run out of mana trying to keep a Mage alive through avoidable aggro. If he does, then the runs out of mana, Mage dies and I die and the group wipes.

Besides, if there's one good thing being a Druid tank in DPS gear, it's that I do more DPS and overall damage than anyone else in the group. So when the DPS dies, I can easily handle a group of trash before the healer runs low on mana. Hooray for that.

Edit: I'd kill someone to get the utility tools my Death Knight or Paladin has, though. Hell, even my Warrior has more utility and ******* buttons than my Druid. Druids deal out the hurt (every 3 minutes) and hope that it's enough. Come to think of it, though, we do have a second taunt - the AOE one - but if I have to use that then we're already screwed as it means people are out of control with their AOE.

What I wouldn't give to have Hand of Protection. I love throwing it on a melee DPS who starts getting out of hand. Especially if you can catch a Warrior with it before he uses Bladestorm. Luls.

Hell yeah! Just needs it's cooldown reduced so it's use won't be misinterpreted as accidental. Jail that annoying DPS on three packs in a row, and they'll have their lesson learned :P

Pretty much everything Anobix said.

The tank will always be a priority, but you should be able to leave him with a HoT/bubble for a few seconds. If you can't that's a problem. Going from 100% health to dead should take a while when leveling.

Now if you happen to get a problem tank (like the one in your story). Treat them as you will, let them die, drop group, compensate as best you can, type vicious insults about their mother in all caps, whatever. When all is said and done I've had DPS 'tank' things better than the tank at times. When that happens I don't stress as much about keeping the tank up. Smiley: wink

Keep the people who are doing the most good for the group alive, and let the idiots die.

If the tank is stupid and causing you to go oom all the time because he's pulling too fast or not wearing the right gear, let him die.

It's a priority system, your mana being the resource. Give it to those people that will help your team succeed at the task at hand, and don't forget that without YOU (the healer), nobody lives through a lot. I will accept that there are exceptions to this, but generally, the people who CAN heal but are not geared to do so (ie tanks and DPS in DPS gear) can't keep the group up very long with the main heal taking a dirt nap.

So, you'll have to revise your outlook for each group. Sometimes it will be the traditional Tank, Heals, DPS for who gets what first. Othertimes it will be all reversed and upside down because of the fight or the group composition.

But first and foremost, do not waste mana on someone that is actually dragging your group down at the time....no matter WHO it is.

Priests need to drink. Tanks can get over it. I drink often, so that most times I don't need to take a prolonged break. I can always get a little drinking in, even if I'm not topped off. I stock 120 water, so I am never caught running out.

If I had a tank that gave me a hard time about drinking, I'd still drink. He would probably die in the next room, prior to my telling him to find a healer more to his liking and dropping group.

Some of your spells will be more mana efficient. You don't have them all yet, but using PoM often, and PoH will be tools you use. Smite healing and the regular "heal" are very thrifty on mana. You will work them in. Learn what really sucks the mana, like flash heal. You'll still use them, but there is a cost.

Good luck and don't give up. I love playing a disc priest. Have fun.

I forgot to put in one of my favorite quotes, I don't even know where it came from...

"You can't heal stupid, so don't waste your mana trying."
