Info from Venturebeat.com. I hereby crown this expansion Crapaclysm. YMMV.

Down about 1 million subscriptions since Cata launch.

As one of the 1 million that cancelled, all I can say about Cata is "Meh".

^ This. It is just more of the same. There are a few gems scattered here and there, but none of the new zones jumped out at me as "innovative". Vashjr could have been spectacular, but in the end was boring after the novelty of riding a seahorse wore off. I expected a lushes, massive, multifaceted forest in Hyjal (where did the Timbermaw go???), but instead had a hilly road full of barren grass with a few trees scattered here and there.

Uldum was interesting at first, but the cut scenes were TERRIBLE (Guild Wars was doing far better cut scenes 5 years ago). Blizzard put together some cheap animations with subtitles and sold them as "innovative", "breaking edge", and "new". We all know from our experiences the cut scenes were downright garbage, not to mention obnoxious. I personally expect better out of the world's largest most popular MMO.

Twilight Highlands was a little better than others, but again suffered the problem of being very bland. I remember in Lich King as I entered new zones my guildies and I were blown away by the various styles and designs. The music. The lighting. Even the new looking creatures. I can't recall one moment in Cataclysm that came close to the amazing moments that were the first few months of Lich King. Anyone else remember how intimidating Icecrown was the first few times you entered the zone?

Deepholme was just a big stone box.

Though they did say that there has been a big jump in new accounts from the new "starter edition." While those aren't paying accounts yet they could always turn into some.

There's been a jump in player activity recently. Whether due to free accounts, summer boredom, or a new patch who knows. Alliance numbers are actually up from this time last year. What's up Hordies, we're taking over. Smiley: wink

Like others have said; the expansion really hasn't done anything to increase the number of people playing long term. After a jump in players at Cata's launch, things pretty much sunk back down where they were.

Could it be that it's the summer and people are out and about doing things?
My personal activity is down just 3-4 hours a week. Only log in for raiding one night and I've had to skip that a few times because of outdoor activities.

I'm sure as the weather changes activity will climb up again.

Furthermore, it could be that the game has been out for 6 or 7 years now and people are moving on and getting on with what life has thrown at them.

Just my 2 cents.

They have also launched a free 7 day "return to wow" promotion for existing customers.

I'm not sure why people keep throwing these numbers around as some kind of evidence of WoWs demise. Right now, it's STILL the best MMO out there, by a huge stretch. Event though this is just my opinion, I honestly think that until the next generation MMO makes it's appearance, it's going to stay there.

When I first tried an MMO I thought it was amazing. It was a huge leap out of what I was used to gamewise. Now every one I try it's just business as usual and nothing is really drawing me to it to stay. I believe most gamers fall in to this category. Until something shows up to "wow" them again world of warcraft will be there to pick up the pieces. As for everyone who quit...they always come back.

I am afraid that you missed the point I had in mind. Its my contention that this X-Pac has been really bad, not that the game is bad. Look 8 of my friends played thru LK and bought Cata, 5 of them quit by the end of January and another several months later. I asked them why they quit and most said they disliked how Cata had affected their play.

So I have been wondering for several months what the powers were going to do to try to fix things. They started making band-aid changes around April and are continuing new ones. But what they are not doing is rolling back any of the major changes that they see as working as intended. And its a lot of those that are the problem ime. YMMV.

It's pretty easy to miss the point you've got in your mind when it stays there. All your original post was was a mention of a website (you couldn't even be bothered to link to the article you seem to want us to discuss) and a childish renaming of the expansion. Usually the point of a discussion is to present your opinion (like you finally did here) and then allow others to present their own opinions.

I actually tried out the 7 day free trial.

ZA/ZG are so forgiving and easy it boggles the mind. They have definitely steered back to WotLK easy compared to Deadmines heroic back in December.

New BH boss Archavon easy. Haven't had a chance to check out FL yet though. 2 days and I am already sitting in SW bored though :(

FL heroic is fun. FL normal has its moments, but its not really something. Rag normal has its merits, its an interesting fight with interesting twists. Cant talk about it in Heroic since I havent tried it.
Shannox Heroic is a loot *****, Rhyolith Heroic is quite interesting in a dps coordination view, but I suppose its boring as hell for tanks and interesting for healers.
We are giving some tries on Alysrazor Heroic. IMO its not really difficult and its a stupid fight, saved for people in the air. But its, also, completely unforgivable. One mistake by anyone and 10 minutes in the fight is throw away.
Cant talk about the other heroics, saved for Staghelm wich was completely bugged to the point that people was killing it avoiding every mechanic just letting a Hunter pet tank it. Lulz.

If you like quests, the new dailies are....interesting if you play in a PvP server.

TotalBiscuit did a commentary with a member of Paragon while they were doing a heroic Firelands run. Here is a link to the first part of that live raid. Beth'tilac seems to be the hardest, even though they wipe on Alysrazor. Baleroc is still a dps check with 194k hp on 25 man with a 6 min enrage timer. Staghelm get's more and more difficult the closer he gets to death (damage keeps getting higher and higher, mechanics stay the same throughout the fight). I have yet to watch the part where they take on Ragnaros. Considering there are two parts left after Staghelm I am willing to bet they still struggle a bit on that fight.
