So another curiosity that's entered my head (yay!). How do you go about leveling your professions? Do you level your character first, then go back and power-level your crafts? Do you try to keep your professions up with your character's level, or even level them ahead of where you are?

How do you level your professions?
Character goes to cap first; professions can catch up later.:11 (19.6%)
I level my professions as I go.:25 (44.6%)
My professions usually level faster than my character.:12 (21.4%)
I don't really have an opinion, but I like to vote.:8 (14.3%)
Total:56

I've been an option #2 person myself. I have this OCD thing where I can't go through the dark portal until my skills are at 300; much to my DK's dismay. Though on my latest alt I'm actually playing 'catch up' more with the character, and routinely bumping up against the level cap for my skills. So I guess that I flirt with #3.

What about you? One of the above, or something else perhaps?

I sit entirely at #3. I get so focused on my professions when I do them that I end up capping for my level almost instantly. The big issue I have is that I end up not leveling while I get mats and whatnot to appease my craft needs.

Depends on the profession for me.

Gathering ones get leveled as I go. With crafting ones it depends. I try to keep them up as I go but more frequently I find myself doing bursts of leveling, then playing catch-up on professions, then leveling, etc. Unless of course, I've decided late to change a profession at which point of course I need to powerlevel it.

So basically, I've done all of the provided choices at some point and am absolutely no help. You're welcome.

I love maxing out professions as I level, and they usually go faster than my toons. With my priest for example, I had the cloth helms as early as possible. She had a +26 Int helm at level 35 and didn't replace it until halfway through Outlands. Smiley: grin

I like leveling them as I level my character. I also like to do it with minimal AH mat buying but over the years that's been getting harder and harder and leveling gets faster and faster.

It depends on the toon and the profession.

Death Knights -- I'll go back and level gathering professions, but crafting tends to stall out. On my most recent one, I just dinged 85 this morning. Skinning had been maxed from shortly after leaving Northrend, but I actually found myself buying a couple of armor kits and some leg armor rather that trying to keep up my Leather Working.

Others -- I usually do crafting in surges, stockpiling materials from various alts and then capping each level of the profession as soon after advancing as possible. Gathering tends to stay current as I level without a particular effort.

Main vs Alt -- My name is Rhode and I'm an altoholic. I tend to have one of each class and to rotate what I play. Those crafting surges are often a spur for me to make a push to level a particular toon. Rested XP maxes out, I don't want to get in a rut with whatever I've been playing and leveling professions gives me something to work on as I go.

Secondary Professions -- I'll level cooking, I know fishing has benefits but I hate fishing and put it off, I seldom find First Aid to be worth the cost in cloth, and I haven't gotten to play around with Archaeology yet.

Worst to Level -- Leather Working. The bottle neck leading up to 300 is horrible on my server and 325-350 doesn't look much better. Sure, every profession has bottle necks, but it seems to have suffered the most from expansion fatigue.

Best Crafting -- Tailoring, closely followed by the inevitable partner (dis)Enchanting. Multiple toons mean that I have piles of cloth early on.

Best Gathering -- Skinning. Skinning things has become such a reflex that I often have something's leather scraps in my bag before I remember to complete certain quest requirements. "Dang, I was supposed to collect (x) from that!"

tl;dr Rhode is verbose when he is coffee deprived. Ignore him, he's babbling.

Depends on both the profession and how far I'm leveling it.

I'm doing Inscription on an alt on a new server. Been insanely easy to power level buy buying herbs. I'n thinking that eventually the cost will be too much but until then professions faster than toon. Around the 500 point of Inscription it gets pricey so will slow then until I have the gold of a level 85 to push it to the cap. But for now selling stuff is easily making me enough gold to power it up.

I could see Alc/LW/BS/Tail working the same way depending on the economy. Engineering is always expensive to level as nothing you make sells, at least with the other ones the results can be DE'd or used.

Gathering profs are weird now that people level via various queues from the comforts of town. They used to be the easiest to level.

Depends on the profession and the character. For previously max level toons or very old alts I will usually have a crafting profession fairly high already and will try to level it as I go along, only from mats I pick up whilst leveling though, I usually won't buy anything to speed the process along. I'm also not too fussed if the crafting profession lags behind, the exception to this is enchanting where I like to have it high enough to be able to disenchant the level of items that I'm looting/getting from quests, so I will spend a little more time keeping that up to date.

Some professions I have leveled without leveling the character, in Wrath I had max level enchanting, jewelcrafting and cooking on a level 72 (who was mainly that level from dailies). This happens when I decide that it would be useful to have a particular profession but don't want to level the class, the profession gets leveled using mats gathered by the characters that I have already leveled up or am currently working on leveling up.

For my newer alts I've gone for the tactic of picking two gathering professions but putting aside mats in the bank to level whichever crafting profession I want once they hit level cap. I've only done this so far with inscription (and that was changing profession on a high level toon rather than a brand new alt) but it seemed to work quite well and is my plan for future alts should I manage to level any of them to cap.

For gathering professions I try to make sure I can pick at least something in the next zone I move up to and I will spend time getting points before moving on with questing if that isn't the case. The addition of xp for gathering is a nice perk to make this feel like less of a waste of leveling time.

Secondary professions get pretty much neglected other than the daily quests and the odd spurt here and there when I come across mats (e.g. for cooking while doing the fishing daily) or there is a holiday event (for cooking). I will normally level these on at least one toon when I get max level, but it's usually for buff food (in the case of cooking and fishing) or completeness (in the case of first aid). I've yet to manage to level archaeology on any character, my highest is level 166 (max level toon digging while waiting for dungeon groups) and the one I've tried leveling while questing is at 70 (on a level 57 toon).

I answered the option numero dos.

I always pick up professions when I start a new character and I TRY to level them up as I go, but the thing is that usually I just want to level really really fast, so the professions just kind of get left behind.
And so, when I get to 85, my professions sit at like 185 skill points or so.

I don't know what's up with that, because I really enjoy taking it slow and focusing on maxing out the professions as I go, but somehow they just get left behind almost every single time.

I try to level my professions as I go, but crafting professions are an issue.

Number 3 is the way I most often level crafting professions. The gathering ones generally just level themselves as I level and tend to max out before am high enough level for the next zone. One exception to that is when I have a gathering profession on a character that I run a lot of instances on because most instances don't offer many opportunities for herbing and mining and only a few are good for skinning.

For crafting professions on my alts, I have a tendency to binge level them. I will send a bunch of mats to them and level the profession up to cap and then I work on leveling the character up to the next level that lets me raise the cap on the profession. This only works well for professions that I have a higher level character doing the gathering for on that server/faction. On my main server, I have so many mats stored away that I can pretty much power level a character's crafting up to whatever the last expansion's cap (or the cap dictated by the character level) without hardly touching the AH. Getting to 525 on professions sometimes takes me a bit longer depending on the mats needed, the availability of the recipes and how badly I need an alt with that profession capped. I had no trouble getting two alchemists from 450 to 525 but my JC/Engineer isn't capped yet in either one because I just haven't had a reason to.

Cooking and fishing I tend to cap out pretty quickly on my main and cooking gets leveled as my supply of cooking materials stocks up. When I get too much to store easily, I look to see if any of my alts need to do some more leveling and send it to them. I haven't been as diligent with the fishing though. I don't have a big reason anymore to keep my fishing capped out on my alts since you can fish in any pool with 100% efficiency at any fishing level. I used to keep their fishing high enough to fish in the zones they were questing in but there's no need for that anymore.

I don't spend a lot of effort leveling first aid at the higher levels. My lowbie alts usually have their first aid pushed to the point where they can make bandages that would actually be useful at their level but after that, the supply of cloth tends to dictate whether or not I use it for leveling first aid. Right now, my main's first aid is capped but most of the cloth I get while questing goes straight to my tailor to use for making dreamcloth and to make bags.

Ditto's on what Morghast said. FWIW I want my crafting profession to be useful as I level rather than any alternative and this route does the job.

JCing is a major pain in the *** to max out I think. It's those last 10 or 15 points that still have me... My priest has been 85 since April and she still doesn't have JCing maxed out, because at this point the only things that ive her skill ups are meta gem cuts (which I haven't bothered to learn any because I don't need to replace them that often and all of my toons are casters except one and I refuse to pay 1k for the burning meta gem recipe) or the fire prism. Fire prism just doesn't seem to be worth it with the cost of green gems and what ore is worth on my server.

The herb market is low on your server, at least for Inscription where the herb type doesn't matter.

Just recently took my baby druid's alchemy to 525 the moment I hit 75. The past couple of weeks she's just been standing around in Dalaran making Truegold.

So it really depends on the benefits of leveling a profession early.

My professions level faster. I'm a profession power leveler.

Once I decide to level a profession, I generally start it, then max it to where I want to be within a day or two. I've moved professions from one toon to another many times, depending on my goals at the time. I have a couple alchemists capped for transmutes, and a dis-enchanter at 500 on both factions as bank toons. My main is maxed on Tailoring and Engineering, and I do have a hunter capped in mining / herbalism. The other primary professions don't really interest me at this time.

Gathering professions I level as my character levels up. It seems the most efficient, and I absolutely hate going back through newbie zones picking peaceblooms as a level 85. It seems to take forever.

Crafting professions are usually costly to level, and I never seem to have enough from the gathering to level them, even when I keep every single thing I gather. For me, I can make gold at max level much faster than a non-max level toon, so I wait until I'm level capped before starting crafting professions. First aid being the exception.

I've always leveled professions with the character, I've never really had an issue keeping up with them assuming I'm not doing a large amount of BGs or dungeons that might make me skip large chunks of a level (if that happens, I go back and catch the professions up before moving on).

I've only power leveled a profession once, when I dropped Herbalism on my main to pick up Tailoring so I could have 2 raiding professions (other is Alchemy). Went 0 to 500 in about 4 hours and 10k gold.. I didn't like that, I like leveling gradually much much better.

Yeah, that is one of the downsides to being on a Full server. There is more supply for a lot of the lower level herbs than I would like, which makes it difficult to do the buy low sell high thing. There are particular herbs, like Dreamfoil, Khadgar's Whiskers, etc. which I bought a ton of at the start of Cata when they were priced really low, that I still have not managed to sell off because there's always a steady supply of them, so I have a hard time selling at inflated prices. =x

I have multitudes of alts, and all are carefully planned so that I have crafts leveling as those alts level, and other gathering alts stocking up on mats for the crafters.

So right now, my characters alone account for all the capped crafts in my guild. The only ones left to cap are Enchanting (515) and Archeology (not even worth mentioning the level... but it WILL go up drastically when I set my mind to it). The first profession I capped was inscription. That was almost immediately when the expansion came out.

Normally, I just craft as I go, but since I have so many alts, I end up getting mounds of crafting materials, meaning my crafters have to burn through it to make room in the bank. And they have almost all capped MANY levels before they could actually train up.
