My L35 rogue is standing there, minding his own business and buying some "special" supplies from a trader when the world suddenly dissolved in hellfire. After some digging, I understand that:
1. I got fried by Deathwing
2. It was completely random and unavoidable
3: There's some benefit from it.
What I can't figure out is #3. I've been all over my skills, abilities, talents, etc and nothing seems to have changed. What am I missing here?

You get an achievement for it. As far as I know, that's all of the "benefit".
Serious badge of honor brah. You can show the scars to your kids.
Your rogue has been put out of his misery. Reroll a better class.
I'll say one thing. Anybody who gets it the first time and whose first response isn't WHAT THE F? is sleeping through the game.

I wish the event induced permanent death on all characters involved.

I feel it's about time they took that out. Deathwing has been killed and there is a new raid tier with a new "bad guy." Deathwing isn't really relevant anymore is he?
Nefarian (BWD), Al'akir (To4W), Cho'gal (BoT), and Ragnaros (FL). Deathwing will be, in theory, the final boss of the expansion. Unless there's a repeat of Sunwell, where they added another tier of raiding after Illidan.
Oh yeah, duh, it was Nefarian, not Deathwing. Whoops! Shows how far I've raided in Cataclysm.
