Death, life without parole, heck, even just abandoning him on some deserted island (is Bikini Atoll still 'hot'?) would all serve one purpose. They would ensure that this monster is permanently sundered from the society he has rejected and that the society does not have to fear his return. Rehabilitation is an absolutely ludicrous conceit in the case of a deliberate mass murderer, and of children to boot. No penalty can be great enough to atone for his actions and no amorphous 'regret' on his part down the line could ever be believed.

Society, with little or no remorse, kills millions of unwanted pet animals every year. With cause, rabid or vicious animals are dispatched for the greater good. Just because the ravening beast walks on two legs instead of four makes no difference. Society should have the right to permanently remove him for its own safety and peace of mind. HOW its done really doesn't interest me.

People citing Norway's max sentence of 21 years are missing a big point; it can be renewed. It's like the US parole hearings but lack of action has the person released instead of kept in prison. The idea is that it keeps anyone from being forgotten by the system and being left to rot accidentally.

I don't usually agree with capital punishment because of the possibility of someone being wrongly convicted because of circumstantial evidence or false testimony, etc. However, for those persons who are clearly guilty and have no sense of remorse and no possibility of rehabilitation, then the legal system (thinking of the US currently, and Canada longer ago) takes too long to ultimately carry out the death sentence.

In this person's case, I believe a death sentence would likely take too long to work through the legal system and finally be too quick and painless, but incarcerating him for life(!) in a decent prison system is insufficient to show justice being done. Being of Norwegian ancestry myself (3 grand parents), I would think tying him to some rocks just below the high tide line and letting the little sea creatures nibble away at him slowly would be suitable. (Yes, maybe I am influenced by the The Vikings debatable method of punishment.)

If all else fails, couldn't they call this an act of treason (as he was deliberately attempting to start a revolution in the process)? Most countries have severe punishments for treason, even when other punishments are lax compared to the US.

I'd like to understand why he did it and how he could get so disconnected from reality that he could do this. Let's wait with shouting LIFE SENTENCE! and KILL HIM! Until we know all that. He won't be going anywhere soon anyway.

Good point. If there's going to be survey spam SOMEONE needs to answer those questions. Part of the punishment should include filling out questionnaires from every grad student with a half-baked idea.

Smiley: nod

The problem with the death penalty being that if new evidence comes up and it proves that the guy was innocent, or at least not as guilty as thought, it's kinda hard to dig him up and reinstate him in society.

With all due respect, that's not a possibility in this case. The evil b*****d surrendered and handed the smoking gun to the cops after murdering all those kids. He didn't even have the decency to off himself, secure in the knowledge that the State wouldn't. There is a possibility that some places are TOO civilized for their own citizens' good.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for sending his *** south, pronto, but we'll always be dealing with shades of gray in the justice system. Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, isn't that the US justice system's motto? Since none of us are omnipotent, we have to rely on evidence to find someone guilty or not. Evidence can be tampered with. Would you want to sentence someone to death on evidence that might - however unlikely - be tampered with?

The reason I'm all for roasting this guy is because he obviously did it. He even said he did. He was seen doing it, caught doing it and confessed to doing it. Even if he didn't do it, he's stupid enough that Darwin would forgive me my prejudice.

Though I find myself finding the vision of him being forced to make goods for arab immigrant families much more satisfying... Letting him die a martyr just doesn't seem like a punishment to me. Idk, if I believed in hell or any sort of afterlife it might. But I don't--for him to actually face punishment, imo, he'd need to be alive.

And, in this case, I'm fine saying "F*ck rehabilitation."

My personal opinion is to skip life in prison, skip the death penalty, and give him an all expenses paid trip to Tehran. There he can live out the rest of his days as a citizen of Iran. Justice would be properly served.

Iran may be totally off the wall bonkers as a country, but not even Ahmadinejad would take this guy. Which says something.

Yes, just imagine what would happen to a Muslim-hating xenophobe in the midst of an Islamic Theocracy. I'm sure it'd be an interesting show.

That's what I get for trying to fix it to be more specific than just linking to CNN's main page. Smiley: laugh

Well, other than being beaten, raped, shanked, and raped some more, it's just peachy.

Funny how people over react to things.. like I said to begin with THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN..

Yet beer kills more people then guns yearly yet you don't see people looking to pull beer off the shelf...... or cars off the lot because cars kill more people then guns......

If someone kills someone drunk driving they are called an IDIOT and society accepts that......

but if someone kills someone who happens to play a video game then its the video games fault.. what an ignorant world we live in

Unfortunately, people are often ruled by fear. People in power often use fear as a means to get the rest of us to do what they want. Sadly, it works a lot of the time.

I'll bet the attacker was wearing pants during the attack; should we ban those too?
