Hey guys, I need your help! (sos)Follow

#1 Jul 20 2011 at 2:09 AM Rating: Decent
Hi, I have posted this thread several weeks ago, but the number of volunteers is still very limited right now. I still need more help and without it my dissertation is going to die. This online-interview will still remain open for another two weeks. I am very very looking forward to your participation!
Thanks again for those who have already participated.

"I am an MSc International Marketing student at King’s College London.

As a player of World of Warcraft myself, I wanted to carry out a dissertation study that examines how people can be freed from the constraints of the market logic in a videogame environment and how much freedom they can get when engaging with this game. Personally, I like this game because it offers me a good way of escaping the reality and it brings me so much fun. But in addition to the gameplay, I am also very interested in the fan communities where people share so many innovative ideas and creative fan arts about WoW. This creative and active fan culture in WoW makes fan communities increasingly powerful and uncontrollable, so that’s the reason why I would like to look into a topic about consumer emancipation. Hence, my research is dedicated to find out whether there is any creative activity that can emancipate players from the gaming logic of leveling up and getting the highest achievement. I am constantly looking for activities in the game or fan creations that do not follow the normal route, but aim to achieve their own ends. These could be experiencing the game in an unexpected way, creating fan arts that reflect critical thinking, or manipulating the game to achieve some unusual purposes, etc.

However, since I have only played this game since Cataclysm, I don’t have enough knowledge about this game’s historical development and the interesting ways of game engagement. That is why I am asking for your help.

Anyone who plays World of Warcraft who is over 18 years of age and has at least one level 85 character is welcome to take part in a 40-minute online interview. The interview could be face-to-face through Skype or online chat through MSN or other chat software. When I finish this dissertation, I would like to send the final piece to you and share my research result with you^^

This research has passed the ethical approval of King's College Ethical Committee. All research findings reported will be on an anonymous basis and will thus not be associated with you unless you wish to be identified. Responses collected will form the basis of our research project and might be put into the final written report, so there might be a need for disclosure of the information covered in the interview to a third party.

If you are interested in my research or want to do me this little favor, please contact me through email (qiaoshen.wu@kcl.ac.uk) and tell me the way you would like to be interviewed (skype, msn or other chat software), so we can make an appointment for this! Just to let you know, if you want to participate, you will also have to fill a consent form which is pretty simple. All of these could be done through the internet!

For more information about information sheet and consent form: iwowstudy.blogspot.com
Thank you for your help ^_^! Cheers!"

Personally, I like this game because it offers me a good way of escaping the reality of my basement and it brings me so much fun. But in addition to the gamecosplay, I am also very interested in the fan communities where people share so many innovative ideas and creative fan arts about WoW+1 while at work with friends. This creativetrollish and active fan culture in WoW makes fan communities increasingly powerful and uncontrollable, so that’s the reason why I would like to look into a topic about consumer emancipationsomething that shouldn't actually be a masters thesis. Hence, my attempted at research is dedicated to find out whether there is any creative activity that can emancipate players from the gaming logic of leveling up and getting the highest achievementway I can phone in a masters paper with tired research. I am constantly looking for activities in the game or fan creations that do not follow the normal route, but aim to achieve their own ends cause by saying you guys are rebels and therefore bad *** you are more likely to do my work for me. These could be experiencing the game in an unexpected way, I'm hoping for kinky roleplaying stories, creating fan arts that reflect critical thinkingwitty trolling, or manipulating the game to achieve some unusual purposes, etc.

However, since I have only played this game since Cataclysm, I don’t have enough knowledge about this game’s historical development and the interesting ways of game engagement as I am to lazy to do any research. That is why I am asking for your help you to do all my research.

Anyone who plays World of Warcraft who is over 18 years of age and has at least one level 85 character is welcome to take part in a 40-minute online interview. The interview couldmust be face-to-face through Skype or online chat through MSN or other chat software if you are female. When I finish this dissertation, I would like to send the final piece dirty pictures to you and share my research result with you^^, this is totally not creepy. :P

This research has passed the ethical approval of King's College Ethical Committee, which I can't believe as the idea is half baked. All research findings reported will be on an anonymous basis and will thus not be associated with you unless you wish to be identified, again females will be stalked by me for years. Responses collected will form the basis of our terrible research project and might be put into the final written report that someone else will do as I am a slacker, so there might be a need for disclosure of the information covered in the interview to a third party, meaning my mom.

If you are interested in my research or want to do me this little favor (you know what I mean ladies :P), please contact me through email (qiaoshen.wu@kcl.ac.uk) ,yes I am dumb enough to post my email on an online forum and tell me the way you would like to be interviewed (skype, msn or other chat software), so we can make an appointment for this! If you don't want to help, you don't have to do all of this to me, because you don't even know what i am talking about and how much effort i have put in this. You are right i am not someone who is the expert of wow, because I am playing it for only 3months and I have lots of other things to do at the same time. I love this game so i choose it as a dissertation topic. This IS a paper that suits for master degree and even phd invest plenty of time to study digital consumer behaviour. In addition to 10 interviews that I have to do, I also play this game by myself and i have joined many forums and keep looking wow news everyday.

Thanks for your comments, because you read it very carefully though you understand it in a completely reverse way.

Guys, King's College is a far cry from University of Denver. If I recall, the initial reviews of her survey were good and she has tried not too be too much of a nuisance. Maybe cut her some slack?

Smiley: nod

@Yolan I'd have preferred you bump the original thread then make a new one, since it was only two weeks ago but I'll let it go.

I'd agree with you Xsarus if I hadn't gotten a PM with a copypasta of the first thread sent to me (And I'm betting more people with high postcounts that posted in general)

@ Yolanda, it's not in the least surprising that there's very few people willing to cooperate. A 40 minute interview is asking a lot from random people on the internet and you should have realized that yourself.

Yeah I followed the links in your first post, and thought the study seemed very interesting. But with 2 screaming youngins I don't have 40 free minutes in the day that I can count on.

Indeed. A thirty question survey would be pushing it for a lot of folks, tbh.

I used to work in the telephone interview industry and our 20-minute surveys on media habits with random demographic questions were too boring for nine out of ten people I got through to.

A survey twice that length with less variety?

No thanks. I'm sorry, but no.

I believe they were the one who was going to give gold to people who took the survey in the non approved thread and then apparently opted not to in the approved one. Though it was a measly like 100 gold which wouldn't be worth the 40 minutes.

At this point, the only surveys I'm interested in helping out are the ones who will donate to a charity for responses. And they sure as hell don't take 40 minutes.
