We are NOT just pawns in the war. Our characters are so highly ranked and coveted, we're sent in for political bartering, regicide, espionage, the works.
To add further to this, the game world itself recognizes the achievements of your characters. WotLK wasn't too far back. As a member of the Alliance, remember the first time you went to Borean Tundra? Long line of recruits, yet you get sent straight to the front of the line because you're already a battle proven hero.

Rule #2. Don't be a God-Mode Mary Sue type character. This means that you should not make your character some super godly powered being that can do anything and destroy anyone. You will be /ignored by any sane role player instantly. God Mode Mary Sue characters are boring, just don't do it. Please.
For in game roleplaying, I agree with you here. For in game roleplaying, be powerful, be influential, but don't go overboard.

Rule #3. Do not bend lore or add things that are not part of the lore to suit your roleplay characters. As in, don't make your character the offspring of a human and a dragon. It can't happen lore wise, so don't do it.

# Dragonspawn - reptile/dragon/human
# Drakonid - humanoid/dragon; Possibly half human.[8]
Hybrids seem to exist. Just because we haven't seen any offspring, doesn't mean it can't happen.

Also, don't associate your character with any major lore characters. Like, don't say one of your characters is the secret child of Sylvanas. Seriously. Blizzard makes the lore, you role play accordingly to that lore.
You should amend this. Don't associate your character
too closely to major lore characters. When you're roleplaying with other folks, sure, being Sylvanas' kid would make you look silly. But to say that your character is somewhat distantly related(like maybe the kid of one of her cousins or something), well then that's much more reasonable.

Rule #4. Your character is not a vampire. He/She will never be a vampire. So don't do it.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and a vampire by any other name is still a vampire. DerpLord wrote:
#1. Your characters can be elite soldiers. Your character is an adventurer. Therefore, you are, rank wise, comparable to a storm trooper. Or any normal soldier.
If the resolution of even a single zone's quest lines can be attributed to your character, and I suggest that they can, you are WAY more than an "elite soldier". You're a god damned hero, and nothing says you can't RP as one. Sure, you may not be the equivalent of an Illidan, or a Jaina Proudmoore, a Thrall or a Grom Hellscream, but you're not some simple soldier.
